Lucia has changed into her travel outfit, which is completely different from the pale yellow maid dress at home. Today she is wearing a royal blue dress. Daphne finds her very eye-catching and can't help but look at her a few more times.
"Lucia, you look really beautiful today."
"Really? Thank you, miss!" Lucia was overjoyed and her eyes sparkled.
In the garden, a servant approached driving a carriage from the side path. The carriage was pure black, and the two horse pulling it were a reddish-brown color, seemingly no different from the carriage that her brother had taken on his journey.
Stepping into the carriage, the windows were tightly shut, and Daphne felt suffocated by the gloomy interior.
"Brother, can we open the window?" She sat next to Miller, shaking his wrist.
Miller glanced at her and said quietly, "Of course you can."
Louis had to stay at home to host the feast and couldn't go out with them. Lucia rode in a smaller carriage ahead of them.
Cart driver raised the whip and it landed on the back of the horse. The two chestnut horses started to slowly trot along the main road.
Daphne leaned out of the window, watching the scenery of the garden slowly recede. Soon, the carriage arrived at a place she had never been to before. Of course, it was still her family's garden.
"Brother, how long do you think it will take for us to leave home?"
Miller didn't take his eyes off the book in his hand and replied, "At this speed, probably about half an hour."
It actually took half an hour. Daphne for the first time felt that having such a big house was not a good thing.
When she saw the edge of the garden, Daphne sighed, realizing that her home was so big that even the boundary wall seemed to stretch endlessly, extending on both sides to the horizon.
The gatekeeper had already opened the gate in advance, and the carriage drove straight out, finally leaving the host family.
Daphne looked at the scenes on the roadside and realized that the outside world was not quite as she had imagined. She had thought that the roadsides would be filled with trees like at home, but in fact, outside the host family, the roadsides were green fields.
The gentle breeze blew in through the window, making her face feel cool. Daphne squinted her eyes and stared outside, unwilling to shift her gaze even though she had already grown tired of the fields and distant mountains.
"Brother, how much longer until we reach the city?" she asked again.
Miller finally took her eyes off the book and glanced out the window, saying, "We'll be there in an hour."
That's good, she was afraid she would have to spend several hours on the carriage before reaching the city.
After watching for another few tens of minutes, she saw that the scenery in the distance had not changed much, so she turned back and took out a book from the drawer under her seat to read.
When immersed in a book, time really does pass quickly. Daphne felt that she hadn't read many pages yet when the carriage suddenly slowed down.
She raised her head in confusion and looked out the window, where she immediately saw the ancient and continuous brick and stone walls - this was the city wall.
Excitedly, she asked, "Brother, have we arrived?"
"Yes, we are passing through the city gate now." Miller has already put away the book, taken out the customs clearance documents from the inside pocket of his chest, and handed them to the city guard who came to inspect.
The soldiers carefully squinted to see the seal on the documents, then shouted a couple of words to the others at the gate, allowing the carriage to enter the city.
Daphne heard the soldiers outside talking, and she felt that their words sounded familiar, even feeling like she could vaguely understand their meaning.
She turned to look at her brother's face, and Miller happened to turn his head and look at her inquiringly. Daphne opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn't ask anything.
The carriage slowly started moving again, passing through the metallic city gates, and Daphne finally saw the appearance of the city inside.
Similar to what she had imagined, the houses in the city were unevenly arranged, with one building next to another. The alleys between the houses were so narrow that only three or four people could walk through at a time.
The exterior walls of these houses all look very old and mottled, with some paint peeling off in places and others appearing to have black soot sprinkled on them.
Daphne feels quite curious, but at the same time has some doubts.
"Why is there no one outside, big brother?" There are street lights on the street, but all the houses have their doors and windows tightly closed, and there is not a single trace of light to be seen.
Miller looked at her with deep eyes and chuckled inexplicably, explaining, "Because the citizens are all asleep."
Daphne She looked out the window, tightened her grip on the window, countless doubts in her heart, but in the end, she didn't ask again.
