The sounds of laughter, the rhythmic clattering of rattles, and the playful shouts of children filled the night market. Everyone here wore smiles, though there were exceptions.
"Third Young Master, I beg you, please don't act like you've never seen the world before," said the stunning Apricot Robe Woman, standing on the steps of the Stone Arch Bridge. She held her forehead with one hand and shook her head slightly, a hint of helplessness in her demeanor. Below her, three steps down, a handsome young man dressed in brocade and holding a jade fan smiled and replied, "It's only natural for me to find everything curious since it's been so long since I've visited the mortal realm. Otherwise, why would I need you to guide me?"
This was the condition for her to give him the elixir.
Lin Kedu suddenly fell silent, staring at him intently. Her eyes were bright and clear, yet Bei Heng felt that they concealed too many inscrutable secrets. After a moment, she asked, "Third Young Master, have you been to the mortal realm before?"
"I came five hundred years ago to face my destined tribulation."
Every cultivator has a tribulation in their fate; overcoming it allows them to elevate their cultivation.
Lin Kedu tentatively inquired, "Do you remember what that tribulation was?" Her expression was complex, tinged with... anticipation?
As if mocking her ignorance, Bei Heng smirked slightly. "Once the tribulation is passed, that memory will be sealed away."
A painted boat glided beneath the arch bridge, its lanterns reflecting on the lake's surface and casting flickering lights on Lin Kedu's face, creating an inexplicable softness.
Noticing her contemplative expression, Bei Heng asked with interest, "Could it be that my tribulation involves you?"
As they descended from the heavenly realm together, he walked ahead but often sensed her gentle gaze upon him from behind. When he turned around, he caught her looking flustered before she quickly shot him a glare and pretended to look elsewhere nonchalantly.
If they had not once known each other, how could she have so many complicated emotions?
Lin Kedu fell silent for a moment. Just as she was about to speak, someone came running from the other side of the bridge, holding something in their hands and shouting, "Lady Kedu!"
As the person approached, Lin Kedu saw a short man in his forties, wearing a dark green long coat. He had a slight hunch in his back and a round face painted with a pale makeup.
Bei Heng frowned slightly. Wasn't this the lowest tier of Wandering Souls? And a rather effeminate one at that. How did Lin Kedu get entangled with him?
"Lady Kedu, I finally found you!" The Wandering Soul smiled obsequiously, bending even lower. "I saw someone in a small town to the east who bears some resemblance to Mr. Xu."
He then unfolded two drawings he held in his hands and chattered on, "This is the portrait of Mr. Xu you gave me before, and this is what I drew of that person. They look quite similar, don't they? Hehe."
Without even looking at them, Lin Kedu waved her hand, snatching the drawings from him and tossing them over the bridge with a swift motion. Then she took out a small Night Pearl from her sleeve and said coldly, "No need for that. You don't have to look for anyone for me anymore."
The Wandering Soul's eyes lit up. "As you command, my lady..." He quickly corrected himself, "As you command, Lady Kedu."
"Oh? What is so valuable that it can earn a pearl set in the Water God's shoes?" A teasing voice came from behind Lin Kedu.
Due to his position, the Wandering Soul only then noticed someone behind Lin Kedu. Peering over, he was taken aback; his face twitched and his lips trembled. "Isn't that Mr. Xu?"
He looked just like he had stepped out of the painting, though there was a touch more warmth in his eyes compared to the coldness depicted in the drawing.
Lin Kedu calmly pushed Wandering Soul back, placing her hands on Wandering Soul's shoulders and giving a firm shove. "Let's go, I'll find you if there's something else."
Wandering Soul was unwilling to leave, turning back every few steps and shouting, "Little lady, Servant has been searching for five hundred years and still hasn't found you. Where did you come from?"
Lin Kedu's expression darkened as she raised her arm, ready to strike. Only then did Wandering Soul sense the danger and hurriedly scamper away.
Bei Heng chuckled softly, elegantly fanning himself. "You've been looking for Mr. Xu for five hundred years? Or perhaps it's me you've been searching for all this time?"
His tone was serious, his gaze fixed intently on Lin Kedu.
The candle in the Lantern burned down to its end, flickering several times before the weak light swayed in the wind and finally extinguished.
The surrounding noise seemed to quiet down as well. Lin Kedu didn't deny it; for a moment, all she could hear was her heart racing wildly, pounding like a drum in her chest, repeatedly shouting within: Find a way to keep him, keep him.
So—
"Wah."
Lin Kedu closed her fan and waited for what felt like an eternity until Bei Heng finally heard a cry that shattered the silence.
There stood Lin Kedu, fierce and defiant like a little tiger, suddenly lifting her skirt and plopping down heavily on the stone slab. She wiped her nose and tears with her sleeve in a dramatic fashion, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear: "Xu Fanluo, you heartless scoundrel!"
