In terms of understanding formations, Zuo Dao far surpassed Zhao Yanwu's imagination. "That year we gazed at each other" was a concept that Zuo Dao had devised, combining thoughts from both past and present lives.
Each Flag was meticulously crafted by Zuo Dao. Although he came from a humble background, after gaining some inheritance, he gradually found a path that belonged to him.
The Flags were rooted in the void, drawing endless celestial energy without needing Celestial Stones to power them. This made the Great Formation a deadlock. While a single Flag might absorb only a small amount of energy, what about hundreds or thousands?
Zuo Dao's understanding of formations was quite simple; he viewed them as circuit boards. Those powered by Celestial Stones were akin to non-renewable energy sources, while those that did not require Celestial Stones were renewable.
The distinction between the two was immediately clear. Celestial Stones are finite, while celestial energy is boundless. No matter how powerful a formation is, without an energy supply, it becomes a dead formation. And what is most abundant in the Celestial Realm? Of course, it is celestial energy.
Unless Xiao Yiming and others could confine this area and extract every drop of celestial energy from it, could these few Celestial Sovereigns accomplish that? The answer was no.
Zhao Yanwu managed to refine a total of nine hundred and ninety-nine materials without wasting any from Zuo Dao. However, Zuo Dao believed this was already sufficient.
Three hundred sixty of them were refined into the Flags for "That year we gazed at each other," another three hundred sixty were crafted into the Flags for "This Year We Are Entwined." The remaining two hundred or so were kept as backups. Even the finest materials would wear down when crafted into treasures, especially since these were consumable Flags.
The two conversed within the formation, completely ignoring the presence of several Celestial Sovereigns, who felt helpless against them.
The only one who did not take action was Tao Yunfeng, who was intently observing the formation set up by Zhao Yanwu. He was also an Array Master of considerable rank. However, upon seeing this formation, he felt utterly lost.
In the Celestial Realm, although Array Masters may be referred to as masters or grandmasters, there are formal classifications based on rank.
From first to ninth rank, there are nine ranks in total, which is the current popular nomenclature. A first-rank Celestial Array Master is the lowest, while a ninth-rank Celestial Array Master is the highest.
Tao Yunfeng himself was a third-rank Celestial Array Master, yet he could not discern the rank of Zhao Yanwu's formation or understand the crafting of the Flags and techniques used in the Formation. It was entirely different from the system in the Celestial Realm.
As a Celestial Array Master, he knew that Zhao Yanwu held the title of "Array Witch" and was classified as a second-rank Array Master. Yet here was a second-rank Celestial Array Master setting up a Great Formation that left even him—a third-rank Celestial Array Master—unable to see through it; this was rather strange.
For a moment, he became so engrossed in the formation that he ignored even Xiao Yiming's hints.
Xiao Yiming understood well how terrifying a Celestial Array Master could be; if they could kill opponents of higher ranks, no one would doubt it.
Unable to break the formation, there was nothing Zuo Dao and the others could do, especially with another assassin of the same level lurking outside. If Xiao Yiming and his companions had known they would end up in such a predicament, they would never have clashed with Zuo Dao in the first place. But now that people had died, retreating would mean they could never hold their heads high in Yuxi. Moreover, they would still face the endless pursuit from the Dark Realm.
At this moment, Jiang Xu wore a face of uncertainty. The mysterious person who had sent him a message had yet to appear. He had followed their instructions without anticipating that it would lead to such an outcome.
With no way to fight back and having to guard against surprise attacks, the Six Immortal Lords were feeling quite frustrated.
Zuo Dao also did not want to waste time, but the lord of the city had not shown up. They had just arrived at Liu Yue City when this situation arose. He could not storm into the lord's mansion, as it was now integrated with the entire Liu Yue City.
Breaking this defensive Great Formation was not difficult for him, but it would inevitably reveal his intentions. It was best for him to avoid making a move if possible; currently, the only plan was to lure the opponent out, which was one reason he had not attacked the Formation Array.
Xian Lan, listening to their conversation, realized that anyone from the Celestial Realm had some understanding or knowledge of formations. From their dialogue, he discerned that the current Great Formation was merely an incomplete one.
Yet even such an incomplete formation could take down several Celestial Sovereigns. He suddenly became curious about what a complete Great Formation would look like.
"Regarding this formation below, it's best not to interfere until you understand how to handle formations," Zuo Dao glanced at Zhao Yanwu.
He understood her thoughts well; no formation master could remain indifferent to his formations. Thus, he felt it necessary to give her a warning.
"Got it! Hurry up; remember we’re on a tight schedule!" Zhao Yanwu playfully elongated her words.
"The previous handling formation was just a basic one; you can think of it as a foundation for formations, but it's different from what you might know as a foundation. This is a foundation formed by a formation itself. Do you know what benefits such a formation has?" As Zuo Dao explained, he couldn't help but ask Zhao Yanwu.
"This formation seems to be movable," Zhao Yanwu thought for a moment and instinctively replied. However, she quickly realized what she had said.
"It seems you've been diligent; that's right—this is indeed a foundation that can be overdrawn," Zuo Dao nodded. He knew that this realization wasn’t something Zhao Yanwu comprehended on her own but rather something she discovered during practice.
At this point, Zhao Yanwu was at a loss for words. A movable formation? This had never appeared in the Celestial Realm, nor had she ever heard of it. Her instinctive response came from an accidental discovery during her daily practice; she had thought it was due to the movement of an Airship.
What did a movable formation signify? For Zhao Yanwu, it was all too clear now. It meant that as an Array Master, she wouldn’t need to fuss about when entering or exiting; before battles, she wouldn’t have to waste time setting up formations. There would be no need to worry about unexpected events leading to death due to lack of time for formation setup.
This was truly a boon for all Array Masters!
"Don't think too much about it. This formation is the only one that can work for now; I haven't figured out the others yet. Once I have a clear idea, I'll let you know. But for now, I'm setting up the Entwined Formation," Zuo Dao said, glancing at Zhao Yanwu's expression, fully aware of what she was thinking.
Zuo Dao only threw out ninety-nine Flags. Any more than that, and Zhao Yanwu wouldn't be able to control them.
One by one, the Flags flew into the void again. Tao Yunfeng also noticed Zuo Dao's actions but still couldn't see what method the other was using. Everything seemed so casual, as if a child were playing without a care in the world.
The formation had already reserved a focal point for the "This Year We Are Entwined" formation. All Zuo Dao needed to do was place the Flags in position.
After placing the ninety Flags, Zuo Dao arranged the remaining nine Flags around Zhao Yanwu in a Profound manner.
Once everything was done, Zuo Dao looked up toward the city lord's mansion. He didn't believe that the commotion wouldn't draw out their opponent; if that were the case, he would have no choice but to step in personally.
He then transmitted some controlling techniques to Zhao Yanwu. The techniques were simple enough that as soon as Zuo Dao finished explaining, Zhao Yanwu had already learned them.
"Your talent is truly enviable," Zuo Dao couldn't help but praise her, even though he was used to it.
"Of course! Just look at who this fairy is!" Zhao Yanwu proudly puffed out her chest.
Zuo Dao turned his face away, missing the sly smile on Zhao Yanwu's face.
However, Zhao Yanwu quickly revealed an even more exaggerated expression—she had just used the controlling technique Zuo Dao taught her and realized she was now connected to the entire Great Formation.
She had become the center of the Great Formation and could clearly feel it moving with her.
"Want to give it a try? If you do, go find those old fellows," Zuo Dao said, watching Zhao Yanwu's delight as if she had found a new toy.
"Okay!" Zhao Yanwu nodded slightly and rushed forward.
Previously, when Zhao Yanwu set up the Formation, she hadn't included her opponents within it. However, they were not far apart. So when Zhao Yanwu took action, before Xiao Yiming and the others could react, they were already enveloped by the Great Formation.
The five felt a flash before their eyes and entered another world; everyone knew they had inadvertently been trapped in the Great Formation by their opponent.
That year and This Year represented two worlds, and when the two Great Formations merged into one, it gave rise to the ultimate formation. In this brand new world, Xiao Yiming and the others seemed to have returned to the time when they first entered the Immortal Path.
At that time, it was not just about cultivation; it also included the person they loved most in their lives. After walking this path for so long, they had almost forgotten about that person’s existence. Yet, the Zuo Dao formation stirred up the deepest memories buried in their hearts.
The warm moments quickly overwhelmed their defenses, lurking amidst both killing intent and tenderness. Each person saw that individual reappear beside them.
As the core of the formation, Zhao Yanwu observed everything that unfolded within the Great Formation. When her gaze swept across each smiling face, it stopped beside Jiang Xu. The shock in her heart was no less than witnessing a legendary treasure.
In fact, everyone around the four had beautiful faces, but beside Jiang Xu appeared a face adorned with long whiskers. Looking at Jiang Xu's blissful smile, Zhao Yanwu nearly retched on the spot. Just as her mind was in turmoil, a ripple appeared within the formation.
This ripple quickly caught the attention of the five Celestial Sovereigns, snapping them back to reality as they raised their hands to launch an attack at once. Although Zhao Yanwu did not need to inject Celestial Essence into the Great Formation, her mind was still attached to it.
Previously, she had not felt much when her mind merged with the formation, but when the enemy seized upon a moment of fluctuation from her mind, they launched their attack. While they did not break through the formation, it allowed them to escape by sheer luck.
Zuo Dao realized something was wrong with Zhao Yanwu when he saw the five escape from the formation. His intention had been for Zhao Yanwu to experience the power of the formation; thus, he didn’t mind her failure too much. He was simply curious about what Zhao Yanwu had seen.
After Xiao Yiming and the others escaped from the formation, they were filled with lingering fear. Zhao Yanwu also felt somewhat discouraged by her initial failure to control the formation. However, when she saw Jiang Xu again, she couldn’t help but think of his smile and finally could no longer hold back.
"I can't take it anymore."
