Da Bao returned with a pile of things and pushed the door open, freezing in place.
"Sis, I didn't come to the wrong place, did I?"
Da Bao's eyes widened in disbelief at what he saw.
"You didn't come to the wrong place."
Su Xiawei walked out from the room, followed by Su Xiaoxiao.
"Sis, what's going on?"
Da Bao asked, confused.
"Oh, Xiaoxiao took the initiative to wash the dishes and do the laundry. I was afraid she would ruin the clothes, so I did it myself. My back hurts so much..."
As Su Xiawei spoke halfway through, Da Bao quickly set down his things and prepared to massage her back. He glanced at Su Xiaoxiao, thinking how small she was—wouldn't she get tired doing all that?
"By the way, do you want to go home?"
Su Xiawei suddenly asked.
Da Bao and Su Xiaoxiao both fell silent, staring blankly at Su Xiawei.
"It's fine if you don't want to go back; I was just asking."
Su Xiawei waved her hand and turned back to the kitchen to cook.
Da Bao looked at Su Xiaoxiao, who cautiously shook her head at him.
"I'm not going back."
Su Xiaoxiao's voice was very soft, but Da Bao still heard her. He moved his lips but said nothing as he turned and entered the kitchen.
"Sis, why are you cooking?"
"I was hungry."
Su Xiawei replied as if it were obvious.
Da Bao's lips twitched as he stood by watching Su Xiawei cook.
Half an hour later, Su Xiawei served the food: "Alright, it's time to eat."
Da Bao and Su Xiaoxiao sat down, staring in amazement at the dishes and rice before them.
"Sis, your cooking smells so good."
Da Bao couldn't help but exclaim.
"If it smells good, then eat more."
Su Xiawei generously piled meat onto his plate.
After gaining his approval, Su Xiawei cooked every day, preparing delicious meals for Su Da Bao and Su Xiaoxiao in various styles.
Every day brought meat to the table, and Su Da Bao was bubbling with happiness. He would return from the mountains each day with meat and bones.
Su Xiawei would complain about it, and he would play the victim. Reluctantly, Su Xiawei would accept the offerings.
One day, on a whim, Su Xiawei decided to learn embroidery and sewing.
Su Da Bao stared wide-eyed at the neatly folded clothes on the bed. "Sister, did you make all these?"
"Yes," Su Xiawei nodded. "For you and Xiaoxiao."
"Sister, you’ve worked hard." Su Da Bao felt a pang of sympathy seeing the calluses on Su Xiawei's hands.
"It’s not hard," she waved her hand dismissively. "I’m happy doing it."
Su Da Bao swallowed the words he wanted to say. As long as his sister was happy, that was enough.
The next morning, Su Xiawei woke up early and took Su Xiaoxiao and Su Da Bao to town.
Su Da Bao took a day off from buying pork to help his sister carry things.
At first, Su Xiaoxiao was apprehensive, fearing that Su Xiawei might sell her off. But gradually she let her guard down, realizing she had encountered kind people.
However, she worried about Zhou Cuiping and planned to find her once she could go out alone.
Meanwhile, Zhou Cuiping was at the Zhou household, charmingly cuddling with her seven brothers.
Old Man Zhou sat nearby smoking his pipe, grinning widely as he watched Zhou Cuiping interact with her brothers, thinking that when Pingping grew up, she would marry his son.
Zhou Cuiping felt secretly pleased; although she had been abducted, her life was better than that of many noble ladies.
Every day she learned to cook from Aunt Zhou and flirted with the men around her.
Now with seven brothers doting on her, she could have whatever she wanted—unlike those noble ladies who never left their homes and couldn’t even earn a penny.
Thinking of this, she recalled Su Xiaoxiao. She wondered how she was doing now, if she had been beaten or if she had enough to eat. Su Xiaoxiao was bought by Su Xiawei, who surely wouldn’t hit her or let her go hungry. Perhaps she was living even better than herself.
With that thought, Zhou Cuiping felt a pang of jealousy. She wanted to take Su Xiaoxiao away so that she wouldn’t have to work anymore. While playing on the mountain with Zhou Family's Seventh Son, she accidentally spotted Su Xiaoxiao and Su Xiawei shopping in town. She pouted and turned to her seven brothers.
“You guys are amazing, earning so much silver,” she said.
Hearing this, her seven brothers doted on Zhou Cuiping even more. “That’s because Pingping is good; that’s why we earn more,” they replied.
On the ox cart, Su Xiaoxiao inadvertently looked up and saw Zhou Cuiping. Her nose tinged with sadness, and she almost cried. Zhou Cuiping was with the Zhou Family; she wondered if she was doing well. Although Su Xiaoxiao had also been sold, she had met Brother Da Bao and Sister Weiwei. She was very happy and hoped that Zhou Cuiping could be happy too. When the opportunity arose, she would definitely find a way to rescue Zhou Cuiping.
Su Xiawei noticed the change in Su Xiaoxiao's emotions and followed her gaze. “Isn’t that Pingping?”
Su Xiaoxiao looked up. “Sister Weiwei, I know Pingping.”
“I know,” Su Xiawei nodded. “When we get back, I’ll take you to play with her.”
“Really?” Su Xiaoxiao asked excitedly.
“Really,” Su Xiawei confirmed with a nod.
After returning home, Su Xiawei began teaching Su Xiaoxiao embroidery and how to make clothes. Su Xiaoxiao learned so quickly that it amazed Su Xiawei. During their free time, Su Xiawei also taught Su Xiaoxiao martial arts. Since childhood, Su Xiaoxiao had admired her cousin’s martial skills and always wanted to learn from him.
Cousin never taught her, saying she wouldn't be able to learn. Unexpectedly, now she could, and Su Xiaoxiao was overjoyed. Every day, she woke up early to exercise, learn to cook, and practice embroidery, as well as study characters.
"Sister Weiwei, I want to go see Pingping," one day, Su Xiaoxiao couldn't help but speak up.
"Let's go, I'll take you," Su Xiawei said as she slung a basket over her back and pulled Su Xiaoxiao toward the Zhou family's home.
The Zhou family lived at the edge of the village, half an hour's walk from Su Xiawei's house.
"Old Man Zhou!" Su Xiawei called out as she entered.
"Who is it?" Old Man Zhou emerged, puffing on his pipe. Upon seeing Su Xiawei, he quickly waved her over. "Oh, it's Xia Wei! Come in and sit."
Old Man Zhou moved a small stool over. "What brings you here today?"
"My sister Xiaoxiao wants to see Pingping," Su Xiawei got straight to the point.
"Oh, so it's Xiaoxiao," Old Man Zhou glanced at Su Xiaoxiao but said nothing more. "Pingping is working in the yard; you can go find her."
Su Xiawei nodded. "Old Man Zhou, has Pingping been doing well lately?"
"She's doing fine," Old Man Zhou took a puff of his pipe. "This girl is clever and likes this family; she's grown fond of my seven sons too."
Su Xiawei forced a smile but remained silent. She looked around and noticed that the Zhou house was quite dilapidated. She discreetly withdrew her gaze and continued to chat with Old Man Zhou.
