Thunder Laws come in various forms, and cultivators of different Spiritual Root attributes can find corresponding Thunder Laws. For instance, Xunuo practices the Yimu Qinglei Method.
Due to the immense power of Thunder Laws, they serve as a formidable means in battles, especially against cultivators or beasts that lack adequate defenses. In such cases, Thunder Laws can often determine the outcome decisively. Moreover, when a cultivator advances to the Golden Core Stage, they require the assistance of Thunder Laws to navigate the Heavenly Tribulation.
At this moment, only five cultivators are using Thunder Laws to dispel the miasma. This is not because others are inept at Thunder Laws or that the Merchant Alliance Delegation is short on numbers; rather, it is simply that only these five possess the strength to break through the miasma. In one corner of the formation sits a middle-aged cultivator, motionless as if in meditation. Scattered before him are severed limbs, which appear to belong to at least two individuals based on their clothing.
A long-armed cultivator disperses the gray mist with Thunder Laws while wielding a black bottle, moving it over the remains as if collecting something. After a moment, a middle-aged black-faced cultivator speaks up: "Stop that futile effort. The poison from Soul Severing Grass harms the soul and spirit far more than the body. Once it enters the body, it will invade the consciousness immediately, severing the soul in a short time with no chance of return." With that, he glances knowingly at the meditating cultivator.
Hearing this, the long-armed cultivator sighs and puts away the black bottle, gazing resentfully at the unyielding gray mist outside the formation. "The formation has also been poisoned; it won't last much longer. We must find a way to send one or two people out to cut off the source of the poison if we hope to clear this miasma and escape from the Gorge."
The middle-aged black-faced cultivator is clearly their leader and possesses the highest cultivation level among them. The long-armed cultivator's words are directed at him. The middle-aged black-faced cultivator nods silently but turns his gaze toward the meditating cultivator. The long-armed cultivator seems to understand and furrows his brow. After a moment's hesitation, he asks the meditating cultivator, "Can Ziyang control the poison gas?"
The meditating cultivator remains still and does not respond. The others exchange glances, aware of what was implied by the black-faced middle-aged cultivator's look. It would indeed be prudent for their companion who is afflicted by Soul Severing Grass to take charge; however, they also know that attempting to break through the poisonous miasma would be a perilous endeavor—one that could lead to certain death, as evidenced by their fallen comrades on the ground. Yet no one could force him into such a role; even if they were all peers at Foundation Establishment Stage, he would not sacrifice himself for an endeavor that offered no benefit.
Just as they find themselves at an impasse, the meditating cultivator suddenly emits a cawing laugh that sounds more like a cry than anything else. "Two of my seven souls have already been severed; this poison is truly vile."
Upon hearing this, their expressions grow even graver. However, a fleeting glimmer of joy crosses the face of the black-faced middle-aged cultivator. "The grudge against Ziyang shall be avenged by us without fail. We will not let any of them escape."
The meditating cultivator's eyes snap open as he scans Zhu Xiu before speaking slowly: "You merely wish for me to die; why speak so sweetly? My life is nearly over; risking it at death's door matters little now. But I will not expend my effort for nothing; you must offer sufficient rewards first."
The others are taken aback by his words; they are on the brink of losing their souls—what good could any reward do them now? Has his mind been poisoned as well? The black-faced middle-aged cultivator nods thoughtfully. "I have heard that Ziyang has descendants still alive; it seems there may be truth in this." The others finally realize he intends to secure some benefits for Ziyang's descendants in hopes of finding a glimmer of hope.
Several Cultivators exchanged glances, quickly sharing whispers among themselves, and soon reached a consensus. The black-faced Middle-aged Cultivator said, "Ziyang, feel free to state your demands; we will do our utmost." Purple Sun shook his head. "My requests are few but must be met. If you can only try your best, then there's no need to mention it. Furthermore, you must swear the most vicious Demonic Oath; otherwise..." At this point, Purple Sun chuckled ominously. "In the Underworld, we won't meet face to face, and if souls scatter, where will they go? We will know soon enough."
Purple Sun's blatant threat caused the expressions of the others to darken.
Upon learning that there were several High-Level Practitioners in the Merchant Alliance Delegation, and possibly even a peak Foundation Establishment Stage Cultivator among them, Tuba Five and his companions fell into panic. Two of the Cultivators even directly proposed withdrawing from the operation.
Although Tuba Five and a few others understood that the difficulty of this mission was extremely high, with the likelihood of death far exceeding that of success, this opportunity was almost their only chance in life to obtain Foundation Pills. After some deliberation, they steeled their resolve to fight to the death. For one Cultivator who insisted on withdrawing, Tuba Five and Ku Zulan, along with another White-Haired Cultivator, acted simultaneously and swiftly killed him on the spot.
Tuba Five then coldly warned the remaining members: "It has come to this; success means ascension, failure means death—there is no third option." While this action dispelled the cowardice among some, it did not enhance the overall combat strength of the group. In fact, due to their lack of decisive power, it could not eliminate even a hint of their fear. In the subsequent ambush, they found themselves at a disadvantage due to poor tactics.
In truth, during this ambush operation, Xunuo and Mei Sanli's teams had also faced setbacks but had initially achieved the best outcome by quickly trapping their opponents so they could not send out distress signals or alerts. Thus, although Tuba Five's team was the last to engage with the enemy, they remained undetected and could proceed according to plan. However, out of caution regarding their own strength, Tuba Five's team set up two layers of formations at the ambush site, with a Defense Formation surrounding them.
Their initial plan was to force their opponents into the formation; if they failed, they would retreat into it and rely on its power for defense. This dual approach led them to hold back during the initial attempt to trap their foes. Tuba Five also possessed two Thunderbolt Children; when he unleashed them at just the right moment, both detonated in succession and managed to kill three opposing Cultivators outright. The sole peak Foundation Establishment Stage Cultivator among them was also severely injured.
As the battle unfolded as expected, facing retaliation from the Foundation Stage Cultivators caused some members to falter. At that moment, four surviving Foundation Stage Cultivators were filled with dread and were all injured; their combat effectiveness was far from peak condition. If they could withstand the counterattack now, even with casualties it wouldn't be severe; they could push their opponents into the formation and take control of the battle's rhythm. Unfortunately, one person's retreat created a gap that caused their entire defense line to collapse instantly. The enemy was fighting desperately for survival and held an unmatched advantage in momentum; breaking through their defenses allowed them to seize strategic high ground and begin mercilessly slaughtering them.
Seeing that all hope was lost, Tuba Five shouted for his teammates to retreat into the formation. Naturally furious yet unable to vent his anger because that very Cultivator who first retreated had been killed as soon as the enemy broke through. Observing his team suffer two deaths and three injuries under the enemy's charge caused Tuba Five’s forces to experience an immediate reversal in strength. They had no choice but to rely on the formation's power for desperate defense.
Though all four Foundation Stage Cultivators were injured, they still managed to shake the formation violently; it was on the verge of collapse at any moment. At this time, the leading peak Foundation Establishment Stage Cultivator sent a Sound Transmission Talisman reporting their situation and inquired about his two other comrades but received no response for a long time. He realized that those two teams were likely in even worse situations. He immediately reported back to Cloud City Merchant Alliance headquarters but knew he couldn't rely on them; by the time help arrived from there, it would only be for collecting corpses.
After some contemplation, this peak Foundation Establishment Stage Cultivator felt confident about breaking through this formation without issue and knew he couldn't allow anyone to escape. He dispatched two Mid-Stage Foundation Establishment Cultivators to assist the other two Merchant Alliance Delegation teams while he and another Foundation Establishment Practitioner continued attacking the formation.
Xunuo had no time to pay attention to Thunderstorm and others' battles; within the formation, chaos reigned as combat intensified beyond measure—Xunuo couldn't afford any distractions. Relying solely on the formation's power was no longer sufficient to stabilize things; Heavenly Shadow Spike as a final trump card couldn't be deployed inside either since its effectiveness would be greatly diminished in such an environment. Thus, Xunuo could only deploy Crimson Fire Whip and Purple Flame Shield while intermittently urging their combined powers into action.
The Elder with Long Eyebrows was forced back to the magic circle, feeling a deep sense of dread towards Xunuo's Purple Light Halberd. His protective Yellow Light was as solid as a magical artifact, making it nearly impossible for ordinary Attacking Artifacts to break through. If he hadn't reacted quickly and retreated in time, he could have faced instant death. Although he could cut through the magic circle, breaking free from it was another matter entirely; that strike would have been meaningless. Since he could slice through the magic circle, he could also sever the space that isolated them, gathering the people inside the circle together, making it much easier to break the formation afterward. At least he could send others out to charge forward.
The Elder with Long Eyebrows then wielded the Gengjin Wutu Sword, slashing towards the endless space within the magic circle. The space within the circle transformed into countless illusions, not representing true space but rather a mirage created by the combined forces of the magic circle's displacement power. The Gengjin Wutu Sword lacked the ability to cut through voids or break real magical spaces, but slicing through illusions without interference from displacement power was not a difficult task.
In a flash, the Gengjin Wutu Sword vanished into the void. The next moment, it appeared in another space; however, it did not linger but instead pushed back in reverse, tearing a massive rift between the two spaces. Instantly, both spaces began to shake violently, teetering on the brink of collapse. Although these two spaces had not been completely connected, their energies merged in an instant. One of the cultivators in the other space was a Three Spiritual Root Cultivator who prominently displayed Fire Root. At that moment, this cultivator received a message from the Elder with Long Eyebrows, urging him to converge quickly.
