Xunuo quickly patted his storage bag, releasing the attack-type array he had crafted. This was an Earth Attribute Attack Array. Although it lacked any defensive capabilities, its offensive power was quite strong, at least surpassing the attack range of Xunuo's spells.
The attack array was concealed within a Defensive Array, and its power manifested as countless stone blades and swords, both large and small, slashing at the descending Fire Cloud Bats. Xunuo's Defensive Array revealed itself without surprise after the first impact from a Fireline Toad. There was no need for Xunuo to restore the array's concealment function. However, he continuously activated the array's ability to obscure Divine Sense. This forced some lower-level Fire Cloud Bats to dive down and attack the array up close with fireballs or thrown stones, as their Divine Sense could not lock onto the target from a distance.
Some Fire Cloud Bats chose not to rely on Divine Sense to locate the array; instead, they attacked directly due to their proximity, resulting in accurate strikes. Suddenly, several stone blades and swords flew out from Xunuo's array, making the diving Fire Cloud Bats the first targets of this assault.
Though these stone weapons were not as sharp as metallic spells, their sheer number compensated for it. The Fire Cloud Bats, known for their evasive maneuvers, were careless in both offense and defense, and soon over ten of them were cut down. The quicker Fire Cloud Bats noticed the barrage of stone blades and swords coming their way and hastily halted their descent, colliding with those that followed behind. The area above the array became chaotic. Seizing this opportunity, Xunuo urged the array to unleash a flurry of attacks.
Before long, the Fire Cloud Bats realized the danger and refused to approach the array any longer. Instead, they began attacking from higher altitudes. While this reduced their casualties significantly, it also decreased their hit rate against the attack array, giving Xunuo a brief moment to catch his breath.
Not long after, the Fire Cloud Bat King expressed dissatisfaction with this inefficient method of attack. It let out a long screech that sent the lower-level Fire Cloud Bats into disarray in midair. Ignoring the incoming stone blades and swords, they dove down recklessly like a swarm of locusts. Seeing this, Xunuo quickly activated the power of his array; stone blades and swords surged forth to strike at the Fire Cloud Bats.
Aware of this feature of the array now, the Fire Cloud Bats took precautions. For Xunuo to eliminate them became much more challenging. As they descended, they flapped their wings rapidly and maneuvered like specters through the barrage of stone weapons. Despite Xunuo's strong Divine Sense, it could not match their evasion skills.
Realizing that this tactic was ineffective, Xunuo immediately concentrated his scattered attacks on ten targeted Fire Cloud Bats. Those locked onto would face dozens of incoming stone blades and swords; while not every strike would hit its mark, each round of attacks would still take down seven or eight Fire Cloud Bats.
Now focusing their main assault on the array, the Fireline Toad did not hold back either; it attacked both sides simultaneously. Each time it unleashed dozens of black flame fireballs, the array shook violently. Then its massive body would suddenly appear among a group of Fire Cloud Bats; with a flick of its long tongue, it swallowed several before bizarrely reappearing beside the array and unleashing another volley of black flame fireballs upon it.
Xunuo was perplexed by the Fireline Toad's strange evasion techniques and did not dare hope that stone blades or swords could inflict damage on it. If he had been using a metallic array that produced Flying Swords with sharpness enough to pose a threat, he might have considered trying it out. However, with only large stones at his disposal in this Earth Attribute Attack Array capable of causing substantial harm to the Fireline Toad, he found that plan unfeasible due to its evasion skills. Thus, he decided to focus primarily on eliminating as many Fire Cloud Bats as possible.
Escaping was crucial; breaking through encirclement was both critical and perilous. If even one Fire Cloud Bat managed to latch onto him for just an instant, he could easily find himself trapped in a deadly situation surrounded by hundreds of these beasts—a fate Xunuo believed would be swift and brutal.
Relying on the power of the formation and the two types of beasts, a stalemate consumption battle was formed, which did not place a heavy burden on Xunuo. Xunuo was also secretly preparing for an escape. The direction of escape left no choice for Xunuo; he could only return the way he came. Other directions, according to the map, were occupied by even more ferocious beasts. If he encountered a powerful beast while fleeing, it would truly be a matter of life and death. On the way back, although there were some scattered beasts, they had all been slain by Xunuo, making that path the safest and one he was most familiar with.
This consumption battle had lasted for most of the day, and the number of Fire Cloud Bats had dwindled to less than three hundred. At Xunuo's feet lay a pile of exhausted spirit stones. He held a Formation Flag tightly in his hand, frowning as he examined it. This was a Formation Flag that had suffered considerable damage; the runes within it appeared somewhat loose, which had greatly reduced the power of the Defensive Array and increased the consumption rate of spirit stones exponentially. Looking at the grayish spirit stones scattered around him, Xunuo sighed in pain, but at least the consumption of spirit stones was finally coming to an end. Next, he would make a desperate attempt to escape.
Outside the formation, the Fire Cloud Bats and Fireline Toad sensed the instability of the array and began attacking more frantically. Just as a Fireline Toad appeared outside the formation and opened its mouth to unleash a fireball, dozens of talismans suddenly flew out from within the formation, scattering like flowers in the sky across various points outside the array. The Fireline Toad clearly sensed danger; it could not afford to launch its fireball attack on the formation and quickly swerved to evade.
However, an icy chill that froze space suddenly descended upon it, leaving the Fireline Toad with a feeling that its magical power was being frozen. The Fire Cloud Bats fell from the sky like rain, transforming mid-air into Ice Bats encased in frost. At that moment, a sharp and piercing cry erupted from the Fire Cloud Bat King, causing all Fire Cloud Bats to leap several dozen feet into the air to avoid more of them becoming Ice Bats.
In this frozen void where heaven and earth lost their color, a dark Flying Vessel shot out rapidly from the opposite side of both the formation and Fireline Toad. The Fireline Toad was clearly unprepared for pursuit; even with its freezing power still active, it could not perform an instant movement spell.
Yet, the Fireline Toad unexpectedly executed something that caught Xunuo off guard—a long tongue as red as blood shot out towards the Black Iron Boat through the formation. This was an accident; however, Xunuo was prepared for unexpected events. Just as the Crimson Long Tongue was about to reach the Black Iron Boat, a Golden Wind Blade flashed by, severing half of the blood-red tongue which Xunuo promptly grabbed in his hand. The Fireline Toad howled in pain as Xunuo's Black Iron Boat swiftly vanished into the distance.
The Fire Cloud Bats rose high in an attempt to intercept but were too late; they transformed into a mass of fiery clouds and chased after it with blazing flames. The Fireline Toad did not rush after them but instead charged into the formation, crashing through this unguarded array. Once inside, it flicked its long tongue around as if exploring before letting out a loud cry and vanishing in an instant. It reappeared in Xunuo's direction of escape.
At this moment, Xunuo held half of the Fireline Toad's tongue in his hand with a grim expression. The severed tongue had a clean cut but bore an ominous black line that was faintly visible on its edge. Although this black line was not very noticeable, its corrosive power was extremely strong; it twisted and writhed like a living thing as it invaded his flesh.
This piece of tongue had been severed by Xunuo using Crimson Gale Spell. He did not expect that within his body, Evil Poison would infiltrate his magical power so quickly; while it seemed to enhance his spell's potency, it also indicated that time was running short for detoxification. It appeared that entering Purple Sun Fiery Valley this time had caused frequent activation of magical artifacts and spells, accelerating the fusion between Evil Poison and his own magical power. If not for his pursuers behind him, Xunuo would have been tempted to immediately consume Firebane Grass to refine an antidote.
Although the Fire Cloud Bats were fast in their escape speed, their individual speeds varied greatly; most lower-level Fire Cloud Bats could not compare with Flying Artifacts. However, when they combined their magical powers into a mass of red clouds, their overall speed would leap forward significantly enough to quickly close in on Xunuo's Black Iron Boat. Yet surprisingly, it was actually the last one to set off—the Fireline Toad—that first caught up with Xunuo.
The method by which Fireline Toad moved was strangely inexplicable; on its surface appearance, it should have leaped forward like other toads. However, its jumping method only had two endpoints without any intermediate process visible. One could only see its takeoff and landing actions without any visible flight trajectory in between. Thus whether flying or battling spells, it always gained an advantage while defense meant nothing to it.
Seeing that Fireline Toad was closing in rapidly, Xunuo flicked his wrist and summoned Flame Fork. He had great confidence in Black Iron Boat's defenses but would not allow any beast to come within striking range. If any beast managed to strike him first—even if only delaying him for a moment—it could potentially hold him back significantly.
The distance was negligible for the Flame Fork, a Supreme Magical Artifact, as both sides rushed towards each other. Almost as soon as Xunuo flicked his wrist, the Flame Fork struck the Fireline Toad right on its forehead. The Fireline Toad had no time to dodge and was sent tumbling backward from the impact.
The approaching Fire Cloud Bats saw this as an excellent opportunity to strike. Without hesitation, they unleashed a barrage of fireballs from the swirling flames above, raining down upon the Fireline Toad, which quickly found itself engulfed in a Fire Sea. With a shriek, the Fireline Toad leaped out of the flames, its long tongue snaking out to swallow several isolated Fire Cloud Bats that had lost their magical support. The scent of roasting meat wafted from the Fireline Toad, indicating that it had sustained significant damage from the combined assault of its two opponents. Nevertheless, it did not withdraw from the competition for the Firebane Grass; shaking off the attack, it pursued once more.
As the Fire Cloud Bats drew closer, Xunuo threw out a Talisman while the Fireline Toad prepared to retaliate with its Flame Fork. Unable to approach Xunuo's Black Iron Boat, the Fire Cloud Bats vented their fury on the Fireline Toad below. Whenever the Fireline Toad was pushed back or advanced by Xunuo's attacks, the Fire Cloud Bats responded with a feast of fireballs. Meanwhile, the Fireline Toad continued to devour any stray Fire Cloud Bat that came within reach. The three parties engaged in a chaotic chase and battle as they made their way toward the exit to the second layer.
