In the blink of an eye, the chase led them out of the Gorge, revealing an even more expansive forest beyond. The Silverback Black Wolf, now in this territory, fully unleashed its speed advantage and vanished from sight in an instant.
Xunuo relied on his Divine Sense to lock onto the Silverback Black Wolf, allowing him to pursue for the time being. However, at this rate, it wouldn't be long before the wolf escaped the coverage of Xunuo's Divine Sense. Once that happened, Xunuo would be unable to continue the chase.
Xunuo realized he lacked the wolf's keen sense of smell and could not track it by scent. He couldn't let this creature go; doing so would only sow future troubles. Resolutely, Xunuo decided to split off a portion of his Divine Sense and attach it to the Silverback Black Wolf before it could escape his grasp.
This method was a spell that could be executed after reaching a certain level of mastery in the Elixir Formula, specifically after achieving differentiation of Divine Sense. However, the Elixir Formula strictly defined this spell's usage: one must fully cultivate the first layer before beginning on the second layer. The first layer merely enhanced Divine Sense, allowing for some delicate operations like alchemy or guiding True Qi. Yet, it did not permit any portion of Divine Sense to extend beyond its own limits.
Within this range, Xunuo could manipulate the separated Divine Sense freely. If it exceeded this range, that portion would effectively be beyond his control.
Before mastering the differentiation of Divine Sense, Xunuo's own Divine Sense was an indivisible whole. If any part strayed from his control, it would be akin to severing a piece from his Divine Sense. If he couldn't quickly retract it, that portion would gradually dissipate, leaving him with an incomplete Divine Sense and no hope of attaining the Main Road thereafter.
Once he reached the second layer of the Elixir Formula and mastered differentiation of Divine Sense, he could produce one or several complete portions identical to his own Divine Sense. At that point, he could place these differentiated portions hundreds of miles away without affecting his own Divine Sense. As long as he could sense them, he could manipulate them freely and instantaneously.
By choosing to split off a portion of his Divine Sense and attach it to the Silverback Black Wolf, Xunuo was taking a significant risk. It was clear he was determined to eliminate the wolf, making a desperate gamble.
Xunuo detached the portion of Divine Sense attached to the Silverback Black Wolf while continuing to sprint behind it. Gradually, the wolf moved beyond the range of Xunuo's Divine Sense.
At a certain moment, a sudden flash like thunder erupted in Xunuo's Sea of Consciousness. In an instant, a splitting headache struck him as if an immense force had caused his skull to crack from within. Xunuo lost control of his limbs; Azure Edge slipped from his grasp as he collapsed like a ragged animal onto the ground. In a flash, he curled up and rolled on the ground while clutching his head, trampling down bushes and low trees around him until he was left battered and bruised.
After enduring such immense pain for what felt like an eternity, Xunuo finally curled up on the ground in exhaustion, trembling uncontrollably. It took him some time before he managed to find Azure Edge and prop himself up with it once again.
Xunuo thought that he had severed the Divine Sense attached to the Silverback Black Wolf. However, he soon realized that this step was not a true severance; it merely disconnected it from his own Divine Sense. It only allowed this particular Divine Sense to break free from his encompassing awareness. Only by sending this Divine Sense beyond the range of his influence could it be considered truly severed.
Had he known that letting go of this Divine Sense would bring such unbearable pain, Xunuo would never have taken such a reckless step.
Struggling to stand upright, Xunuo entered the Sea of Consciousness and was immediately struck by a pale gray complexion. The black clouds swirling above the Sea of Consciousness were mercilessly tearing at the surroundings, continuously compressing the space. Correspondingly, the pool of water below was boiling as if heated to a frenzy. What troubled Xunuo the most was the dimming light suspended in the middle; it had faded significantly. Darkness had reclaimed much of the space. Hovering above the Sea of Consciousness, Xunuo gazed at the horrific scene before him. With a long sigh, he withdrew from the Sea of Consciousness, still shaken.
Amidst waves of excruciating pain, Xunuo slowly released his grip on the Divine Sense. The range of his Divine Sense had shrunk by nearly half. He hadn’t anticipated that severing a portion of his Divine Sense would inflict such significant damage and impact on himself. Fortunately, although the separated Divine Sense had long exited his encompassing range, its connection with Xunuo remained unbroken.
Xunuo dared not delay any longer. If the Silverback Black Wolf ventured too far, their connection would weaken and eventually sever completely. At that point, there would be no hope left.
Clenching his teeth, Xunuo infused blue wind into his sword sheath and set off in pursuit along the direction of the Divine Sense.
The Silverback Black Wolf's escape seemed purposeful. Although it took many twists and turns, Xunuo noticed that these places were either impassable cliffs or deep pools and marshes. After navigating these dangers, the Silverback Black Wolf continued straight toward a single direction.
After fleeing for an entire day, the Silverback Black Wolf finally stopped in one location. Xunuo, trailing behind, was on the verge of losing hope. As he felt their connection fading further, he grew anxious enough to almost spit blood. Just then, the Silverback Black Wolf halted completely as if waiting for Xunuo to catch up.
Though suspicion surged within him, Xunuo knew that this spot was indeed Tiger's Den—a place he needed to confront.
Dividing his Divine Sense was perhaps the gravest mistake he had made thus far—a mistake that could cost him his life.
Despite having lost a leg, the Silverback Black Wolf had reached this place in just one day. In contrast, it took Xunuo two full days to approach it. Gradually closing in on the Silverback Black Wolf, he noticed that its position remained unchanged. This made Xunuo wonder if it had already perished or if there was some trap waiting for him. He dared not let down his guard and cautiously approached where the Silverback Black Wolf lingered.
Having pursued this far, Xunuo was nearing the brink of collapse. A severe headache plagued him relentlessly, making each moment unbearable. His ability to endure thus far stemmed from his resilient nature and unwavering belief within himself.
For Xunuo, killing the Silverback Black Wolf had become a secondary concern. Retrieving the fragment of his Divine Sense was now the most important task above all else.
In truth, Xunuo had been tracking that piece of Divine Sense he had split off. Once the Silverback Black Wolf moved beyond the reach of Xunuo's Divine Sense, he could no longer ascertain its whereabouts. However, as long as the fragment of Divine Sense attached to the Silverback Black Wolf did not dissipate, there would still be some connection between them. Unless the Silverback Black Wolf could instantly sever this bond, it would be difficult to cut off such a connection rooted in his essence. Yet, if they were too far apart, that connection would weaken, leaving only a vague direction or intermittent sensations.
Now, Xunuo was gradually closing in on that piece of Divine Sense. The connection became clearer and more defined, allowing him to sense that the Divine Sense still lingered on the Silverback Black Wolf. Moreover, the Silverback Black Wolf had not perished; instead, it lay hidden among a patch of crimson grass, its aura slowly recovering as its broken claws healed completely. At that moment, Xunuo confirmed that the beast had escaped here to recuperate.
Xunuo had been anxiously pursuing it, fearing that the creature would return to its lair. If another mutated Silverback Black Wolf were present in the den, Xunuo knew he would stand no chance against it in his current state. If discovered, he might not even have a chance to escape. Now that he saw the Silverback Black Wolf had not returned to its den, he felt a great sense of relief.
As long as he remained cautious, he could not only retrieve his split-off Divine Sense but also potentially catch the beast off guard and slay it in one decisive strike.
Seeing that the Silverback Black Wolf was about to enter Xunuo's Divine Sense range, he suddenly paused to gauge the wind direction. He circled around and approached from upwind.
After a moment, Xunuo's Mind Power finally enveloped the Silverback Black Wolf. The first thing he did was to retrieve the fragment of his Divine Sense. Instantly, the splitting headache diminished significantly, and the turbulent Sea of Consciousness began to calm down. Xunuo finally let out a long sigh of relief and remained still as he gradually released his Divine Sense.
