“Ruoshui, Xu Cangyuan cannot be left behind.” 0

In the quaintly decorated side hall, Ilder earnestly urged Jiang Ruoshui. His brow furrowed, eyes filled with concern as he paced back and forth in front of the soft couch. 0

Leaning against the soft couch, Jiang Ruoshui showed no response, her eyes still closed in a light slumber, her expression serene as if the sky were falling and it had nothing to do with her. 0

Seeing that Jiang Ruoshui showed no sign of opening her eyes, Ilder couldn't help but raise his voice, urgency creeping into his tone. “You have committed a crime against the court by abducting an Imperial Criminal. Although I have managed to suppress this matter for two years, it cannot be hidden forever! News from the capital indicates that the emperor has been deeply concerned about Xu Cangyuan’s abduction. Ruoshui…” 0

“What does it matter if he is concerned?” 0

Jiang Ruoshui remained with her eyes closed, but a dismissive snort escaped her lips. “The emperor should have known when he exiled Cangyuan to the frontier that he might not die.” Her tone was flat yet carried an undeniable authority. 0

For a brief moment, Ilder thought he saw a flicker of shadow pass through Jiang Ruoshui’s eyes, a fleeting darkness that was hard to grasp. 0

“Whether Xu Cangyuan is alive or dead, I only need you to hand him over to the Ministry of Justice. A commoner granted the title of Prince of Huai due to military merit is merely a stroke of luck from a past life. It is Xu Cangyuan’s own greed for the throne that led to his exile; he has brought this upon himself.” 0

As Ilder continued speaking, he failed to notice that Jiang Ruoshui had already opened her eyes and was watching him. 0

Those eyes, like glass, sparkled with an unusual brightness, resembling flames that seemed ready to consume Ilder. Anger and dissatisfaction radiated from her gaze. 0

“Do you think that person sitting on the throne is truly noble? The victor becomes king while the loser becomes a bandit. If he had lost to Cangyuan, it would be you begging him now! Since I have the courage to save Cangyuan, I naturally have the means to protect myself.” 0

“Ilder, put away your bias against Cangyuan and focus on being your Commander. In Barbarian City, it would be easy for me to strip anyone of their position.” Jiang Ruoshui scoffed, leaving Ilder embarrassed and flushed. He opened his mouth to retort but found himself at a loss for words. 0

"Consider my words carefully. The officials have matters to attend to, so I must take my leave." Knowing that today would end in the same fruitless manner as usual, Ilder departed with a heavy heart. 0

As he turned, he unexpectedly locked eyes with Xu Cangyuan, who was approaching the side hall. They both exchanged a knowing smile before parting ways, each smile carrying its own significance. 0

"Cangyuan, you're here." Upon seeing Xu Cangyuan, Jiang Ruoshui immediately brightened up, her smile blooming like a vibrant flower, her eyes sparkling with joy as she hurried toward him. 0

Xu Cangyuan glanced in the direction Ilder had left and asked knowingly, "You truly aren't afraid that the Emperor will send troops to suppress you in his fury for keeping me in Barbarian City?" 0

It wasn't concern for her safety that prompted his question; rather, he was curious about her audacity to shelter a wanted criminal like him. 0

This question had lingered in his mind for two long years, and now that it was finally voiced, he gazed deeply at Jiang Ruoshui. 0

Jiang Ruoshui smiled radiantly, leaning into Xu Cangyuan's arm and playfully shaking it. "Are you worried about me?" She tilted her head, her eyes filled with eager anticipation as she looked at him. 0

"Ilder cares for you," Xu Cangyuan asserted without answering Jiang Ruoshui's question. 0

The entire city knew of the Commander's feelings; Ilder's affection for Jiang Ruoshui mirrored her feelings for him. 0

No, perhaps Ilder truly loved this willful Princess. But Jiang Ruoshui... As this thought crossed Xu Cangyuan's mind, a hint of cold amusement flickered within him, his gaze betraying a complex mix of emotions. 0

"And what about you? Do you love me?" Her watery eyes blinked rapidly, fixated on Xu Cangyuan as if trying to catch every subtle shift in his emotions, filled with both hope and anxiety. 0

"Cangyuan bears the weight of his sins and cannot offer any woman a stable life; he is unworthy of loving another." His tone was flat, devoid of any discernible emotion, yet his gaze slightly averted. 0

Jiang Ruoshui was taken aback, seemingly not expecting Xu Cangyuan to respond to her in that way, a hint of disappointment flashing in her eyes. 0

Then she reached out her arms and wrapped them tightly around Xu Cangyuan's waist. The crisp sound of bells from her wrists filled the room, as if expressing her emotions. 0

"Since that's the case, Cangyuan, I'll protect you, and you can learn to like me," she said with a playful smile, hope rekindling in her eyes. 0
