It seems like I've been in a daze all along. When Daphne finally came to her senses, she felt a slight chill in the air.
Someone was gently holding her hand, and she was slowly walking down a dark corridor with that person.
This corridor is astonishingly long, with pale flames flickering on the torches along the walls.
Daphne tilted her head slightly and looked at the man beside her, only catching a glimpse of his profile.
The side of his face was extremely pale, without a trace of color, as if it were a corpse. Thinking this, she felt that the man leading her exuded an aura of death all over his body.
As they neared the end, the man turned to the right and stood in front of the last dark black door.
"Child, we have arrived," his voice was deep and mellow, and his presence made Daphne feel inexplicably immersed and attached.
The man reached out his left hand, placed it on the door handle, gave it a gentle turn, and with a click, the heavy wooden door slowly swung open.
Daphne slightly opened her eyes and looked around the room. The first thing that caught her eye was a silent and ancient piano, closed with its lid, waiting for its new owner to uncover it. She took a few steps forward, while the man unknowingly let go of her hand.
The bookshelf occupies the entire wall, neatly stacked with various books.
There is also a large white desk with a delicate porcelain cup on the tabletop, a perfect piece of art. Daphne approached and lifted its lid, inside it was empty.
She walked to the corner again, where there were two sofas, one of which looked suitable for a nap.
Daphne approached and sank into the sofa, reaching out to grab a velvet pillow, and comfortably closed her eyes.
The man looked at her and chuckled softly.
The laughter immediately brought Daphne out of that inexplicably comfortable state. She looked up at the man and instinctively sat up straight.
"Don't be too nervous, child," he said with a pair of dark blue eyes, now looking gently at Daphne. "This will be your room in the future. Do you like it?"
Daphne nodded earnestly, her eyes full of admiration.
"Do you have any other questions?"
Daphne asked cautiously, "Who am I?"
The man patted her head and said, "You are my only daughter, and your name is Daphne Van Zandt."
"Are you my father?"
"Of course," the man said slowly, "you also have a brother, his name is Miller."
"Brother?" Daphne softly repeated the term.
"Miller lives right across from you. If you have any questions, you can go to him."
"Anything at all?"
"Of course."
"Father..." she called out to the man, clutching the pillow in her hand, and asked in confusion, "It seems like I don't remember anything, why is that?"
"Don't be afraid, Daphne."
Daphne felt a pair of hands lightly touch her head twice. He said, "Forget, in order to embrace a brand new life."
Time passes too quickly. When I looked at the clock on the wall again, the hands had already reached half past five.
Father suddenly closed the heavy book in his hand and set it aside, looking at Daphne. Daphne sensed something and looked at him uneasily.
"I'm leaving, Daphne," he said. "But first, I have one last gift for you."
The man took out a silver bracelet with a red crystal from his pocket, put it on Daphne's left hand, slowly sliding it onto her delicate and fair wrist. The crimson gem set off her innocent beauty.
"It's beautiful. Miller will definitely like you even more," he said, lowering his eyes.
Prefer?
The door was gently closed, the barely audible sound of the lock turning could only be barely caught by Daphne's keen hearing.
His final reminder to her was, "If anything happens, go to your brother. After I leave, he is the only family you have here."
But she had no idea what her brother actually looked like.
Daphne Clutching the velvet pillow tightly, she looked around the empty room in confusion.
In the corner where the piano was placed, the wall was covered with heavy warm-colored curtains, blocking the view of the outside scenery.
Daphne didn't know what to do. She stood up from the sofa and slowly moved around the room, finally standing in front of a door. This door did not lead to the outside corridor; if she wasn't mistaken, it should be her bedroom.
Daphne twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open. inside It was very dark, with no candles lit, but she could see everything clearly, even the patterns on the ceiling.
It was a very cozy bedroom, with sheer curtains hanging from the ceiling, faintly obscuring the round king-size bed, which was adorned with a lovely floral-patterned duvet covering soft cushions.
The dressing table is very clean, with only a wooden comb placed on it.
Daphne walked over, opened one of the small cabinets, and saw the neatly arranged jewelry inside.
Daphne is tired of these things, now she just wants to empty her mind and take a nap.
She fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up again, she looked at the clock on the wall and it was already eight o'clock.
Daphne stared at the second hand moving forward second by second, her body slowly recovering from the dormant state, while the increasingly strong desire to devour also awakened.
I'm so hungry, my stomach is starting to ache in waves.
Dragging her empty body, she walked into the separate bathroom and knelt by the valve, turning the faucet to release hot water into the tub.
The body was completely submerged in the water, leaving only the neck and above exposed. The scalding water tinted her tender, white face with a hint of pink, momentarily causing her to forget the rumbling in her stomach.
But "momentarily" was just that—momentary. When she changed into a dress from the closet, her intense hunger once again began to torment her will.
Why am I so hungry? It's like I haven't eaten in a whole decade.
Daphne lay back on the bed, closed her eyes, hoping to control her impulses, but it was of no use.
She climbed out of bed again, pacing between the bedroom and the living room. She pulled a book from the shelf and flipped through it a couple of times, but whether it was because she was so hungry or not, all she could see was the words moving slowly across the page like worms.
As time passed, Daphne felt her vision darken and an overwhelming desire to eat anything she thought she could.
"Go find your brother."
Suddenly, her father's words flashed through her mind.
