Chapter 186: Appointed to the Northern Frontier
Three months after the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference, the demon race began its invasion of the Tang Empire. This time, it was not a mere performance alongside Jiang Wannian, but a genuine invasion battle. The Demon Lord personally led the charge, and the demon race poured forth in full force.
Border General Jiang Wannian betrayed his country and colluded with the demons. The borders of the Tang Empire were lost, blood flowed like rivers, and famine spread across the land.
By decree of the Tang Emperor, the Third Demon General was dispatched with four hundred thousand Lion soldiers to the frontiers to resist the Demon Army.
In the Divine Ruins, on the sacred mountain.
After Lin Feng listened to Dugu Po's account of the situation in the Tang Empire, he fell into silence.
Dugu Po looked at Lin Feng and said, "Junior Brother, it's time for you to leave the mountain."
"What can I do alone against the entire demon invasion?" Lin Feng replied gravely.
Dugu Po said, "You are different from me and different from Miaomiao. Miaomiao's path of cultivation is like mine; she learns from others. If that were the case, there would be no need to leave the Divine Ruins. The Divine Ruins is the strongest place for cultivation in the world. But you are different; your path of cultivation does not lie within the Divine Ruins. Your path lies beneath your feet."
Lin Feng remained silent. His time spent with his second senior brother had made him understand many things and recognize the important mission he bore.
"Senior Brother, I entrust Miaomiao to you."
With that, Lin Feng bowed to Dugu Po and said, "Second Senior Brother, I take my leave."
"Junior Brother, take care. We will wait for your return."
With that, Lin Feng took flight with Hei and left the Divine Ruins. Three days later, he arrived at the capital of the Tang Empire and sought an audience with Princess Jian'an of the Tang Dynasty. Lin Feng waited outside the palace for two hours, but instead of Tang Jiner, it was Mo Mo who came out to meet him.
Mo Mo saw Lin Feng. After several attempts to speak, she ultimately remained silent. She led Lin Feng through the capital until they finally entered a quiet teahouse.
The two of them sipped tea in silence until Lin Feng broke the quiet, asking, "How is the princess?"
"The demon race has invaded our Great Tang like never before. The princess is determined to alleviate the Emperor's worries. How can her mood be good?" Mo Mo replied quietly, revealing no emotion.
Lin Feng said, "I have returned this time to see where I can help."
Mo Mo took out a yellow silk bundle and slowly opened it. Inside were documents and a seal. She said, "The Emperor knows you would come back. If you truly wish to help Great Tang through this calamity, please take this bundle to the Northern Frontier."
Lin Feng asked in confusion, "The demon race is invading the southern border; why should I go to the Northern Frontier?"
Mo Mo explained, "The demon race has launched an unprecedented full-scale attack with the intent to destroy our Great Tang. The Emperor suspects that there are humans secretly aiding them. Among the great human nations, only our Great Zhou, Great Tang, and the Wind Nation above the Northern Frontier maintain a Tripartite Balance."
Lin Feng pondered for a moment and replied, "I understand now. The Emperor wants me to guard the Northern Frontier to prevent the Wind Nation from taking advantage of the situation?"
Mo Mo nodded and said, "That is indeed the case. The Emperor has received news that there has been internal strife in the Wind Nation recently, with some backing from the Great Zhou Empire. In ordinary times, the Wind Nation would never dare invade our Great Tang. But now things are different. Additionally, the soldiers stationed at the Northern Frontier are from the Flowing Cloud Sect and Fire Departure Sect."
"With Jiang Wannian's betrayal, some ill-intentioned individuals will gradually reveal themselves. To repel external threats, we must first secure our own ranks. The Emperor hopes we can eliminate the traitors soon and then focus on fighting against the demon race."
Seeing the anxious look on Mo Mo's face, Lin Feng couldn't help but ask, "Has it come to a point where the nation is in jeopardy?"
"If we make one wrong move, Great Tang will cease to exist," Mo Mo said with a furrowed brow.
"I understand."
Lin Feng took the package and promised, "Please convey to the Emperor that as long as I, Lin Feng, draw breath, I will ensure the safety of the Northern Frontier."
As Lin Feng stepped out of the teahouse, the door creaked open, and Tang Jiner emerged from within. She gently pushed open the window and watched as Lin Feng gradually disappeared into the crowd.
Mo Mo asked, "Princess, I don't understand. You clearly want to see him. Why do you avoid him?"
Tang Jiner continued to gaze at the flow of people outside the window, her expression melancholic. "What good would it do to meet? It would only add to the sorrow. It's better not to see him."
"And what about in the future? Will you never see him again?" Mo Mo inquired.
"One day, he and I will forget each other in this vast world," Tang Jiner replied with a sigh of sadness. She then stood up and said, "Let's return to the palace; there are battles awaiting us."
Northern Frontier, Yanmen City.
The soldiers of the Northern Frontier received word that a Trust Supervisor was coming to take office. They all stood at the city gate of Yanmen City waiting for Lin Feng's arrival. The leader stepped forward upon seeing Lin Feng approach and greeted him warmly, "We warmly welcome Trust Supervisor Lord Lin, first place in the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference."
Lin Feng nodded slightly and addressed the two Captains Shen ahead of him, saying, "You both have worked hard."
"It is you who has traveled a long way, my lord," they replied.
The two Captains Shen led Lin Feng into the city and then into the Governor's Residence. After familiarizing himself with the surroundings of the Governor's Residence, Lin Feng planned to return to his room to wash up and rest.
Knock knock knock...
A knock echoed through the air, and Lin Feng opened the door to find a stunning woman standing outside.
"Who are you looking for?" Lin Feng asked.
The young woman was beautiful, her complexion as fair as jade. She parted her crimson lips and inquired, "Are you the newly appointed Commander, Lord Lin?"
"Indeed," Lin Feng replied cautiously, studying her. "Who are you? Who sent you to my residence?"
"It was Captain Liu who sent me, my lord. You need not be suspicious; may I come in?"
Before Lin Feng could give his consent, the girl smiled charmingly and slipped past him. Not wanting to touch her, Lin Feng stepped aside.
Her steps were light and delicate, like a wisp of smoke gently drifting through the air, almost ethereal. Once inside the room, she slightly bowed to Lin Feng and said, "My lord, I am here to take care of your daily needs."
Lin Feng responded with a slight "Oh," and said, "I don't require a maid at the moment; you may go back."
The girl paused for a moment before replying, "My lord, I was sent to serve you."
Understanding her implication, Lin Feng thought to himself that these two Captains had come up with a beauty trap to entangle him in their schemes.
Furrowing his brow, Lin Feng said, "I am used to being alone; I don't need anyone to attend to me. You may return."
The girl lowered her head sadly and asked, "Is it because my appearance is lacking in your eyes?"
"You misunderstand. What does appearance have to do with this?"
"The master is pretending to be confused on purpose. You clearly know why I am here. Why won't you accept me?" The woman said, her delicate shoulders beginning to tremble. Then she started to cry.
"What a determined woman, unwilling to give up until she has me. How can your tricks succeed?"
Lin Feng sneered a few times, then remained calm and expressionless as he said, "You should go back."
"Master, I can wash clothes, cook, clean the room, and help you organize your books. Master, although I may be a bit foolish, I will study hard and put in my best effort. Please accept me," the girl Chuchu pleaded pitifully.
"I don't need any of that. I prefer to live alone," Lin Feng replied.
"Master."
The girl looked at Lin Feng with a playful pout, inadvertently opening her collar to reveal her fair chest and a hint of softness beneath. Seeing that her pity was in vain, she prepared to seduce him.
"Get out," Lin Feng said firmly, his tone cold and authoritative.
The girl finally pulled up her clothing, regaining her composure. She looked at Lin Feng and said softly, "You are different from others, but you must have a heart."
With that, she turned and left.
Having just arrived, Lin Feng had witnessed the demeanor of the two Captains. Liu Quan from the Fire Departure Sect seemed skilled in flattery, while Chen Guang from the Flowing Cloud Sect appeared much more somber and steady.
Early the next morning, as Lin Feng was just getting out of bed, Liu Quan had already been waiting outside for quite some time. Upon seeing Lin Feng emerge, he immediately reached out with a grin and said, "Governor, you’re up quite early."
Lin Feng yawned and replied, "Liu Quan, you’re even earlier."
Liu Quan leaned in with a smile and said, "My lord, did you not sleep well last night? There’s plenty of time ahead; you should take it easy in the evenings."
Lin Feng shot Liu Quan a glare and replied, "I sent that person away last night."
Upon hearing this, Liu Quan's expression darkened for a moment, but he quickly smiled again. "What person?"
"A beauty came to my room last night, and you sent her," Lin Feng said with a grin.
"Impossible! How could I do such a thing? My lord, someone is framing me; you must believe me!" Liu Quan exclaimed, looking innocent.
"Of course I believe you. Is everyone here for the meeting?" Lin Feng asked.
"My lord, each county from the Northern Frontier has sent one captain or higher to Yanmen City," Liu Quan said with a chuckle.
Lin Feng was convening the first meeting of the Northern Frontier commanders since taking office to understand the combat readiness of the Northern Frontier. Overall, there were three hundred thousand Tang Soldiers stationed in the Northern Frontier, including fifty thousand cavalry and thirty thousand armored soldiers.
"My lord, we also have a navy. Only our Northern Frontier has a navy in the entire Tang dynasty," Liu Quan introduced with a smile.
"We have a navy?" Lin Feng asked, somewhat surprised.
"The scale isn't very large, but we do have one," Liu Quan continued to flatter.
Lin Feng became interested and asked, "Tell me more."
"We have fifty warships of various types. My lord should visit the harbor," Chen Guang, who usually spoke little, chimed in.
"Fifty warships, that sounds quite impressive," Lin Feng remarked.
Chen Guang continued to explain, "My lord, the human race has three great empires: the Great Zhou, our Great Tang, and the Wind Nation. The Wind Nation's naval power is their greatest strength. Compared to the Wind Nation's navy, we simply cannot compete."
The naval forces of the Wind Nation are divided into two divisions, each possessing thousands of massive battle ships.
After listening to his subordinates' accounts, Lin Feng began to inspect the soldiers of Yanmen City. All the soldiers stood in formation in the square, weapons in hand, standing tall and straight.
Liu Quan closely followed Lin Feng and asked, "My lord, these soldiers are those I brought out with Chen Guang. What do you think?"
Lin Feng glanced over and saw through their facade. Having experienced the Southern Border War and fought his way out of the Demon Army, he recognized that these soldiers appeared formidable but were merely a show of armor. They lacked the sharp killing intent forged in true bloodshed.
The Great Tang is bordered by the Wind Nation to the north and faces the Barbarians and demons to the south. The Great Tang and Wind Nation have always adhered to their pact, refraining from conflict. As a result, the soldiers of the Northern Frontier have experienced few life-and-death battles.
Now, with the demon invasion from the southern regions intensifying, subtle changes began to emerge in the Northern Frontier. (To be continued)
