Chapter Ninety-Five: The Power of a Single Step
The man noticed that Lin Feng was lost in thought and did not disturb him, instead gazing affectionately at the woman in the Yuan Stone Coffin.
Lin Feng snapped out of his reverie, feeling a bit abrupt and wanting to apologize. Just as he was about to speak, he suddenly realized that the Founder was a generous person, unconcerned with formalities, so he decided to let it go with a smile.
The man looked at the sleeping beauty and murmured, "Moon, we will soon be apart, but you need not be sad or worried; we will meet again before long."
With that, he revealed a tender smile, emotion shining in his eyes. Then he turned to Lin Feng and said, "When you leave, take this coffin with you. In your lifetime, you must protect it well until you meet my true self and confront him. Can you do that?"
Hearing this, Lin Feng knelt on one knee as if taking an oath and said, "As long as I draw breath in this life, I will ensure Grandmaster remains unharmed."
The man nodded and replied, "Good. I believe you can do it. If it weren't for your steadfast nature and remarkable talent, my sword would not have brought you here."
Lin Feng suddenly recalled the Cloud Sea and River of the Underworld and asked, "If it weren't for the Moon City Sword's assistance, I might have already perished. May I ask, senior, what exactly are the Cloud Sea and River of the Underworld? Why are they so boundless?"
"The Cloud Sea was once land," the man explained. "It was pierced by the Sage, who then used a great Divine Technique to transform it into clouds that concealed its surface. As for the River of the Underworld, it is the entrance to the Netherworld."
Lin Feng was left speechless by this revelation.
The earth was pierced—just how powerful was the Sage? What kind of battle could have caused such upheaval?
"May I ask, Founder, does the Netherworld truly exist?"
The cultivator spoke with reverence while Lin Feng was merely intrigued.
The man replied, "Ten thousand years ago, a battle occurred on earth that led to the disappearance of the Netherworld. The current River of the Underworld is merely a secret realm of night rivers—boundless and connected to emptiness—its destination unknown."
"Only those from the Saint Realm can ascend and wander among the stars. Thus, I once wished to know where the River of the Underworld flows; unfortunately, I cannot. Perhaps only in the Market of Jiuzhou Continent can one find answers."
"The boundary, I feel, does exist. However, the present is vastly different from the past. It should be related to the Battle from ten thousand years ago," the man pondered.
Lin Feng listened intently, his awe and admiration for the Market reaching unprecedented heights. When he encountered the Sword Saint Senior, he spoke of Senior Xu as if he were part of the Azure Cloud Sect, a being that all could only look up to. Now, even figures like the Founder held the Market in reverence; one could only imagine how high the Foundation of the Market had risen.
"Senior, what exactly is the Foundation of the Saint Realm?" Lin Feng asked with great interest.
"In the past, the Saint Realm signified unobstructed ascension; once one entered it, they would hold a certain status. In the mortal realm, it was naturally the pinnacle of existence."
"And what about the Imperial Realm? For instance, Emperor Huang?"
"In the mortal world, those beings are like ants in the eyes of those above. Yet, even ants possess their own wisdom and extraordinary qualities. It is difficult for mortals to produce an Imperial Realm figure; if an emperor were to emerge, they would be an unparalleled existence. Even past Soldiers would have to bow in respect," the man said with a hint of pride.
The emergence of an emperor among mortals was a source of pride for all beings.
"However, following the Battle from ten thousand years ago, everything has changed. It has become a delusion to aspire to reach Sage Realm, let alone Imperial Realm."
With that statement, a sigh escaped him. This sigh was for himself and for all Cultivators born after ten thousand years.
Lin Feng contemplated these words and suddenly noticed something amiss. He asked, "Founder, if what you say is true, then it is impossible for anyone after ten thousand years to become a Saint. How did Senior Xu manage to cultivate to that level?"
"He was born and trained before that Battle ten thousand years ago," the man replied succinctly.
"What? Does that mean he has lived for ten thousand years?" Lin Feng exclaimed in shock.
The man nodded. "The Battle from ten thousand years ago was a catastrophic disaster for the Cultivation World. The Market is one of the few surviving Cultivators."
"Then he is not unique? How many others survived?" Lin Feng inquired.
The man shook his head and said, "I don't know the exact number, but it definitely doesn't exceed five. Market and his disciple are two of them. In the Ghost Realm, there should be one survivor. Buddhism and Taoism have always been profound and mysterious, so there should be one alive from that sect as well. There should also be one Ancestor from the Yunlu Xian Sect."
"Then, does that mean Divine Ruins has two people? No wonder Sword Saint Senior is so fascinated by Divine Ruins. With just these two individuals, it's enough to make all cultivators bow down," Lin Feng said, feeling quite proud and pleased with himself. After all, Divine Ruins was so impressive, and he was one of its disciples.
He never imagined he had joined the strongest sect in the world, without a doubt. The thought made Lin Feng feel exhilarated.
The man continued, "It's a pity that Market's disciple passed away young; now Divine Ruins only has one person left."
"What?" Lin Feng exclaimed in shock, "Such a powerful person is dead? Who killed him? Doesn't he fear Market wiping out their entire clan?"
The man replied, "I don't know who did it; I just know for certain that he is dead. Market was furious at the time and stomped his foot into the ground, which led to the creation of the current Cloud Sea."
"Wha... what... you mean that Sage's stomp created the current Cloud Sea... that Sage is... is Market?" Lin Feng stammered, overwhelmed with excitement.
"Who else could it be?"
The man's tone was flat as if he were stating an obvious fact.
Lin Feng imagined the scene of Market stomping through the earth and couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow, Market is really that powerful."
"If we go into detail, Cloud Sea should be located in Xizhou among the Nine Provinces. It was originally the land of the Demon Clan; I've heard their stronghold is also here. When Market stomped down on Xizhou, both the Demon Clan and their kind dared not voice their anger. They even forbade their disciples from spreading this news. A thousand years later, this incident became a secret among the Demon Clan; very few know about it."
"He stomped down on an entire province?"
Lin Feng gasped inwardly, feeling as though his world was crumbling. How big must this person's foot be? How could anyone possibly fight against someone like that?
Lin Feng finally understood the meaning behind Sword Saint Senior's words: Market is like a giant; all beings look up to him.
It was impossible not to look up; one moment of displeasure could trample an entire state. If nine feet were to step down, the Nine States would be destroyed, and the whole planet would likely meet its end.
The man looked at Lin Feng, astonished and speechless, then revealed a faint smile as he said, "Do you suddenly feel very insignificant?"
Lin Feng nodded, but there was a fiery intensity in his eyes. "Indeed, I feel small, but I will strive to improve. To be honest with you, I actually... I actually am a Divine Ruins Disciple."
As Lin Feng spoke these words, his voice grew softer, like a shy girl, and he eventually lowered his head in embarrassment.
Upon hearing this, the man was momentarily taken aback before bursting into laughter.
"Founder, I know my cultivation is low. Feel free to mock me," Lin Feng said, already accustomed to the teasing from such senior figures. Hadn't that Old Spirit Monkey mocked him countless times?
The man suppressed his laughter and said, "Your cultivation is indeed somewhat lacking. But you are still young; the road ahead is long, and there are many opportunities."
"Founder, you are truly kind. If only you were my master, my cultivation would surely progress rapidly," Lin Feng sincerely remarked, feeling that this powerful person was not at all aloof but rather friendly like a neighborly uncle, with a gentle demeanor.
If only he were a Loli...
Lin Feng shook his head repeatedly, quickly dismissing that dark joke.
"In my life, I have enough to be proud of. However, compared to the Market, I still fall short of a great foundation. I observe that you possess a self-created method and show no signs of Divine Ruins techniques. How did they teach you to cultivate?" the man inquired.
Lin Feng replied honestly, "They hardly cared for me; it was like they were raising me in the wild. They gave me a cultivation manual, an Ancient Cauldron, and a few interesting books. They even said that if I didn't secure first place at the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference, they would take everything back and erase my status as a registered disciple."
"Founder, do you think that's fair? So far, the only cultivation technique I know is the rather mediocre Angry Dragon Fist. Do you know what the Angry Dragon Fist is? It sounds impressive and intimidating, right? Let me show you."
With that, Lin Feng demonstrated the Angry Dragon Fist and then said, "How can this be called a Divine Technique? It’s more practical for me to just throw a punch. Others reach Fate Realization with their Manifestation of Divine Powers and their grand Divine Techniques. And what about me? Sigh."
Lin Feng spoke for the first time about his inner confusion and grievances. He did not understand what Master Da and his second senior brother were truly planning.
If he were to be left alone, they would arrange for the Sword Saint to guide him. Yet, when it came to his own training, once he reached Fate Realization, they did not impart even a single decent Divine Technique.
On the battlefield that day, strong figures like Sima Shangshan, who had achieved Fate Realization, could sweep away large groups of enemies with a single move. And what about him? He could only strike with punches and stab with swords.
The man said nothing but quietly flipped through the book. He paused after turning just one page and asked, "Do you know what this book is called?"
"I don't know, but it is quite profound and can change according to my Foundation."
"This is the General Outline, considered the starting volume of the book. I was fortunate enough to encounter the Master of the Divine Ruins, who enlightened me and lent me this General Outline for a look. The importance of this book is comparable to an entire province; you must keep it safe."
The man earnestly advised him.
