Yang Laifu sighed and said, "I, Yang Laifu, have worked hard all my life, never doing anything to feel guilty about..." Wei Ning raised a hand to stop Yang Laifu's lament. He walked around the room and suddenly opened the window, looking outside. He asked, "Uncle Yang, have you offended anyone or had any major disputes with others?"
Yang Laifu was taken aback and replied, "No, I have lived here for five generations. Each generation has been honest and upright. Even during the Cultural Revolution, we never criticized anyone; it’s impossible for us to have made enemies."
Wei Ning murmured, "That's strange. Very strange."
Yang Laifu hurriedly said, "Master, if you have something to say, just say it directly. Are you trying to make me anxious?"
Wei Ning waved him over and pointed at a neon light outside. "Do you see that neon light?"
Yang Laifu nodded.
Wei Ning continued, "The base of that light is right over a negative energy point, illuminating your house. That light flickers day and night; even if you turn off all the lights in your home at night, there will still be some illumination. In feng shui, this is called 'the ominous light of day,' which is extremely unfavorable. If the builder didn’t understand feng shui and constructed it recklessly, that would be one thing; but if someone did this intentionally..."
Wei Ning paused and said solemnly, "Do you understand?"
"Impossible, impossible," Yang Laifu shook his head. Being an honest man, he naturally found it hard to believe what Wei Ning was suggesting.
Wei Ning remained silent as he took out a compass from his pocket. He noticed the needle sinking and frowned, muttering to himself, "How strange; why would this house cause the needle to sink? Could it be..." According to the compass's eight trigrams explanation, a sinking needle indicated the presence of evil energy. However, this wasn't malevolent energy; it suggested that there was an unnatural death in the house. Although it wouldn’t harm the residence directly, staying here for long could lead to feelings of unease and disorientation.
Suddenly, Wei Ning asked, "How did your daughter pass away?"
This question clearly struck a nerve with Yang Laifu. Tears immediately filled his eyes as he said, "My poor daughter... she was so foolish! She committed suicide!"
Wei Ning's heart stirred as he quickly asked, "What happened? Please tell me in detail."
"It’s all because of that scoundrel Li Wei," Yang Laifu lamented. "He had his eyes on our land and bullied us since there were no men in our family. He sent thugs to harass us every day. My daughter couldn’t take it anymore and... hanged herself... Oh, my poor girl! Why was she so foolish? They wanted our land; we could have just given it to them—why did it have to come to this?"
Wei Ning sensed that this family seemed far from peaceful and asked, "Have you considered that this 'Evil Light of Day' might be caused by Li Wei? This 'Evil Light of Day' can make people restless and impulsive enough to take extreme actions. He has come to harass you multiple times—couldn’t there be some connection?"
Yang Laifu was astonished and replied, "No way! Although Li Wei is a bully in this area, he wouldn’t go so far as to take a life. It’s impossible!" Yang Laifu shook his head repeatedly, clearly unconvinced.
Wei Ning sighed inwardly. He thought that Uncle Yang was truly kind-hearted and viewed others with a gentleman's perspective; he seemed unaware of the dangers and treachery present in the world.
Wei Ning thought to himself: No matter what, he had to help the Yang Family resolve this case. There were too many wrongdoers in this world, and if he didn't encounter such situations, it would be one thing. But now that he had, he felt compelled to intervene. Perhaps his grandfather had already returned home by now. Staying here for three to five days wouldn’t be a problem.
He suddenly spoke up, “Uncle Yang, may I go see your daughter?”
Yang Laifu frowned and stammered, “This… this…”
It was commonly believed that once a coffin was sealed, it should not be reopened. If it were to be opened again, it would surely bring disaster. That was why Yang Laifu looked troubled.
Wei Ning said, “Uncle Yang, haven’t you heard? The fate of a person who commits suicide is quite tragic; they cannot immediately reincarnate. A substitute must be found. Your daughter committed suicide, and if a substitute isn’t found, she will become a wandering soul.”
Upon hearing Wei Ning's words, Yang Laifu exclaimed, “How can this be…”
Wei Ning explained, “A person who commits suicide has their soul trapped at the place of their death and cannot leave. Moreover, at the time they took their own life, they will repeatedly reenact their final moments. If no substitute is found, this will continue for thousands or even tens of thousands of years. It’s truly miserable.”
Yang Laifu gasped, “Then my daughter… doesn’t that mean…”
Wei Ning nodded. “Exactly. That’s why I need you to open your daughter’s coffin so I can see her body and determine if there’s a possibility for her reincarnation.”
“Don’t believe me?” Wei Ning asked.
Yang Laifu was straightforward and didn’t beat around the bush; he nodded in agreement.
“Alright then,” Wei Ning asked, “When did your daughter hang herself?”
“Around ten in the morning. Oh!” Uncle Yang said, “That seems to be the exact time.”
Wei Ning took out the Cow Tears that Granny Skeleton had given him previously and hadn’t used up yet. He rubbed it over Yang Laifu’s eyes and said, “Take another look.”
Sure enough, when Yang Laifu approached the beam where his daughter had committed suicide, he saw a white shadow that resembled his daughter. She was repeatedly tying a noose with a piece of grass rope to the beam above her head, then putting her head through it. With a kick of her legs, her head tilted to one side; her eyes bulged out, her tongue extended three or four inches before retracting again as she continuously reenacted the act of taking her own life.
Yang Laifu was both shocked and frightened, crying and kneeling before Wei Ning. "Please, I beg you, save my daughter. I'm begging you..."
Wei Ning helped the honest and pitiful farmer to his feet. "Wait a moment, let me dispel the negative energy in your home first."
After walking around the room, he noticed a stepping stone on the ground that looked ancient and had become very smooth and shiny over time. "Get me a hoe," Wei Ning instructed.
He pried up the stone and then took out a talisman from his pocket. He burned it around the stone three times before carving the words "Mount Tai is Here" into its surface with his finger.
Yang Laifu watched in awe at Wei Ning's miraculous skills, his trust in him growing even stronger.
Wei Ning smiled and said, "Just place this Stone Guardian in a sunny spot in your house, and you will have nothing to fear. The Evil Light of Day will be dispelled without any effort."
Yang Laifu repeatedly expressed his gratitude and led Wei Ning to the mourning hall. By this time, the people in the hall were already buzzing with discussion. Upon seeing Wei Ning emerge, they cast him curious glances.
Wei Ning paid them no mind. "Uncle Yang, you can open the coffin now."
Uncle Yang quickly called over a few eager men from the village to help lift the coffin. As Wei Ning leaned closer to take a look, he saw that Yang Laifu's daughter had clearly hanged herself; her tongue had protruded three or four inches long. However, since she had only been dead for a short time, there were no signs of decomposition yet.
Wei Ning couldn't help but stomp his feet in frustration, exclaiming, "You all nearly caused the death of a living person!"
