However, when looking back, there was nothing. Wei Ning felt strange as the two of them passed through the town. The dark clouds obscured the moon, and an eerie aura enveloped the area, which was deserted and heavy with silence. Only the faint moonlight filtered through the trees. As Wei Ning took a few more steps, a familiar feeling grew stronger. Suddenly, a house ahead lit up brightly, and weak shouts came from inside, “Damn wild boar! I’m on the brink of death, and you still won’t let me go. Has your conscience been eaten by dogs?” 0

A red figure dashed out of the house quickly. The person inside shouted loudly, “I told you not to steal the cured meat!” With that, a broom was swung out, and it seemed that the red figure was in pain as it let out a shriek and fled rapidly. 0

Wei Ning found that voice incredibly familiar and hurriedly led his grandfather over. They saw a blood-red handprint stamped on the door, clearly fresh and still wet. Wei Ning's heart stirred as he turned to his grandfather and said, “Grandpa, I need to go ahead for a bit. Let’s meet at the inn we stayed at last night; I have something urgent to attend to.” Without waiting for Wei Qiuxi's agreement, he took a deep breath of the wind around him and nodded, “This is it.” With that, he dashed off in a specific direction. 0

Wei Ning ran wildly until he finally stopped in front of a forest. It seemed to be a landfill site, as he could smell a terrible stench from afar. In the distance, he could vaguely see a red figure writhing among the garbage. Fearing to alert anyone inside, he quietly approached. 0

Holding his breath, Wei Ning crept closer. In the landfill, he saw that red figure crouching down, seemingly doing something. As he stepped in closer under the moonlight, he couldn’t help but gasp in horror. 0

Before him was a person—if one could still call them that—kneeling on the ground with their head bent down. Beneath them lay a dead wild dog that had been dead for who knows how long, covered in maggots. The foul odor made Wei Ning’s stomach churn. Yet this person didn’t seem to mind; they were tearing into the dead dog with their hands, taking large bites and even swallowing the maggots along with it. 0

What shocked Wei Ning even more was that this person had their scalp completely removed, revealing shiny scalp skin underneath. Their body was crawling with maggots that continuously entered and exited their red flesh—an utterly disgusting sight. Even more horrifying was that this person only had half of their body! 0

Yes, only half. 0

From their head down to their lower body, it looked as if they had been sliced in half with a knife, leaving just half of them intact. From the side view, one could see their abdominal cavity slightly exposed along with remnants of large intestine and heart—though no longer beating—filled with darkness and stench while more maggots wriggled inside. 0

Was this still a human? 0

How could this possibly be alive? 0

Yet they were indeed alive; their continuous eating motion confirmed to Wei Ning that this was a living being! 0

Although the figure was blurred, Wei Ning still recognized him. 0

"Wu Haozi!" Wei Ning exclaimed. 0

His disciple, Wu Haozi. 0

What was he doing here, and how had he ended up in this state? Was it because he had saved Wei Ning last time? 0

Wei Ning suppressed the immense sorrow in his heart and slowly approached Wu Haozi. It seemed that Wu Haozi sensed someone coming; his ears twitched, and he dropped to all fours like a wild dog, attempting to flee. But Wei Ning was swift; with a sudden lunge, he blocked Wu Haozi's path. 0

"Mouse, it's me," Wei Ning said, forcing back his grief. 0

Wu Haozi appeared terrified of strangers, fear flashing in his eyes as he tried to escape again. 0

Wei Ning grabbed hold of Wu Haozi. He noticed that Wu Haozi's hands were foul and blackened, with long nails caked in dirt. As Wu Haozi pressed his palm against the ground, he lost his balance and began to topple toward Wei Ning. Without hesitation, Wei Ning steadied him. He could hardly believe that the upright and strong man from years ago had turned into this wretched creature. His nose tinged with bitterness as tears threatened to fall. Wu Haozi let out a low whine and struggled free from Wei Ning's grasp, making another attempt to flee. 0

"Mouse, it's me! I'm Wei Ning," he urged quickly. 0

Upon hearing Wei Ning's name, Wu Haozi suddenly froze, as if recalling something. His single eye darted around before he tried to break free again. With tears blurring his vision, Wei Ning said softly, "Mouse, tell me who did this to you. Was it Lin Lingsu?" 0

At the mention of Lin Lingsu's name, Wu Haozi began to tremble violently, rolling on the ground and emitting pitiful sounds of distress. He looked utterly tormented. Wei Ning crouched down beside him and spoke gently, "Mouse, everything will be alright. Your master is here. Your master is here." Unable to bear witnessing Wu Haozi's suffering any longer, he turned his head away. Seizing the opportunity, Wu Haozi broke free from Wei Ning's grip and fled swiftly. 0

In that moment, Wei Ning didn't need to think hard; he guessed that Wu Haozi must have suffered at Lin Lingsu's hands while trying to save him. As for how he had ended up like this, it was likely due to some curse or poison inflicted by Lin Lingsu. Anger surged within him at the thought of that woman who appeared angelic but had a heart as venomous as a scorpion. 0

"Lin Lingsu, it doesn't matter how you feel about me, but no matter what, don't touch my friends. This grudge is settled." 0

At that moment, Wei Ning felt not a trace of love for Lin Lingsu, only disgust and hatred remained. 0

Wu Haozi moved with incredible speed; even Wei Ning couldn't keep up. They raced through the mountains, running for three consecutive peaks. Suddenly, they stopped. Wei Ning looked up and recognized the place well. 0

Dragon Tiger Mountain. 0

A deep hatred flashed in Wu Haozi's eyes, and his body began to tremble. 0

Wei Ning grasped Wu Haozi firmly, ignoring the maggots crawling on him, and said in a low voice, "But did someone here harm you?" 0

Wu Haozi let out a howl. 0

Wei Ning nodded and said, "Brother, wait here for a moment. I, Wei Ning, dare to venture into the dragon's den; how could I be someone who fears for my life? This blood debt, I will repay for you. Stay here; I'll be back soon." 0

With that, he adjusted his posture and headed down the mountain path. 0
