"Phoenix Maiden" said, "For the next few days, you should avoid wandering around Miao Village. The information here is limited, and suddenly appearing with a new face can easily attract attention, which is not beneficial for our plans. This house belongs to my people; you can stay here safely for three days. After that, we will make further plans."
"Wei Ning" nodded in agreement.
Days passed slowly for "Wei Ning," who paced restlessly in the room. Although "Qing" amused and teased her daily, "Wei Ning" paid no attention until the evening of the third day when "Phoenix Maiden" emerged from the house, dressed lightly and carrying a long bundle of ropes on her back. It was then that "Wei Ning" truly noticed "Phoenix Maiden's" beauty for the first time. Though she did not possess the ethereal grace of "Lin Lingsu" or the charming innocence of "Ding Ying," she had her own unique allure. However, "Wei Ning" felt that "Phoenix Maiden's" demeanor increasingly resembled that of "Qiqi." This feeling lingered in her heart, refusing to surface.
Perhaps it was all due to being a Gu Master.
"Let's go, Qing. Stay at home and don't wander around."
"I understand," Qing replied sulkily, not daring to defy "Phoenix Maiden." She pouted and walked off in a huff.
As dusk fell, Miao Village was different from its usual tranquility. Torches lined the mountainside like stars scattered across the night sky, resembling a fiery dragon extending into the unknown, illuminating the entire village as if it were daylight. The excited shouts of the Miao people speaking in their native tongue echoed from afar; clearly, today was a joyous occasion for them.
"Wei Ning" took a deep breath of the night air and followed closely behind "Phoenix Maiden," avoiding the Miao people as they ascended from the back mountain. The path was rugged and treacherous, with sharp peaks standing like knives all around them. However, both "Phoenix Maiden" and "Wei Ning" were skilled individuals; they stealthily made their way until "Phoenix Maiden" pointed to a dark hole and said, "Let’s go down here."
"Wei Ning" looked around; a crescent moon illuminated the jagged rocks and cast eerie shadows everywhere. Strange birds circled above them, and in the distance, flickering lights and loud cheers from the Miao people could be heard. Peering into the hole revealed an abyss of darkness that seemed endless. Frowning, she asked "Phoenix Maiden," "Is this the right place?"
"This is a hidden cave in the back mountain. If you don’t believe me, then don’t go in," "Phoenix Maiden" replied coldly. She picked up a stone from the ground and threw it down into the hole. Suddenly, countless flapping sounds erupted from within, echoing like thunder—a terrifying spectacle. "Phoenix Maiden" shouted, "Go!"
With that, she led "Wei Ning" to hide beneath a large rock. Moments later, swarms of bats surged out of the cave, blocking out light as they filled the air. In the distance came cries from the Miao people: "The Spirit of the Cave has appeared! The Spirit of the Cave has appeared!"
"Phoenix Maiden" scoffed lightly and muttered under her breath about the ignorance of the Miao people. She took off a long rope from her body and secured one end to a rock before fastening it around her waist. Testing its strength, "Wei Ning" suddenly grasped the rope tightly and said in a low voice, "I'll go first."
Phoenix Maiden nodded, and Wei Ning grasped the rope tightly before jumping into the pit. A soft voice from above called out, "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Wei Ning descended rapidly, reaching the bottom of the cave before firmly holding onto the rope and landing smoothly. Looking at his hands, he found them clean and unblemished, without a trace of blood. He gave the rope a shake, and after a long pause, Phoenix Maiden slowly descended.
Wei Ning had often been outdone by Phoenix Maiden, but this time he felt a sense of pride as he displayed his boldness. The cave was pitch dark, and he quietly murmured as he activated his Yin-Yang Eye. He took Phoenix Maiden's hand in his own; her delicate fingers sent a ripple of warmth through him. The cave clearly exhibited the karst landscape typical of the southern regions, twisting and turning with winding paths, filled with stone pillars, stalagmites, and stone beds in various forms. However, the ground was littered with bat droppings, which significantly marred the beauty of the scenery. Phoenix Maiden's face turned pale as she covered her nose with her hand, but Wei Ning remained calm; having experienced the Burning Corpse Forest, this place felt trivial in comparison.
As they ventured deeper into the cave, they occasionally heard bats flapping their wings, creating a chilling breeze. After a short while, they suddenly emerged into a spacious area. The ceiling was low, about four or five meters high, and an ancient lantern hung above, seemingly untouched for centuries. Strangely enough, there were no bats here; it appeared they were wary of this place and dared not enter. Beside them was a clear pool of water with a massive stalactite hanging overhead, dripping steadily into the pond. The walls were densely etched with horizontal lines—clearly a record kept by previous Cave Women to mark the passage of time. A dry stone bed was covered with fresh cotton quilts, and a bright red character for happiness was still visible.
Suddenly, loud noises came from outside. Phoenix Maiden quickly pulled Wei Ning into a small earthen hole nearby and whispered urgently, "They're coming in."
Wei Ning felt a chill run down his spine and dared not make a sound.
The earthen hole was just big enough for both Wei Ning and Phoenix Maiden to fit snugly inside. Their bodies brushed against each other, their breaths audible in the quiet space. Wei Ning leaned out slightly, focusing intently on every movement outside.
Suddenly, Wei Ning felt an itch in his nostrils as a sweet fragrance wafted in. He whispered, "Stop fooling around." But as soon as he spoke those words, he realized something was off; this was not Phoenix Maiden's usual demeanor at all. He turned to look back at her and found her eyes glimmering seductively, her breath fragrant like orchids. Her lips moved continuously—expressing longing or anger, sorrow or pleading.
Looking further down, he noticed that one of Phoenix Maiden's long legs—fairer than frost and snow—had already entwined around his waist as she leaned closer to him.
