Wei Qiuxi turned around, his appearance unchanged, though his skin was paler than before. Wei Ning stared at her grandfather in disbelief, hardly able to believe her eyes.
She had dreamed countless times of reuniting with him, but the reality felt so abrupt. Wei Ning pinched her thigh; this was not a dream.
Wei Qiuxi smiled gently and said, "Child, why are you pinching yourself so hard? Have you grown up and forgotten your grandfather?"
Wei Ning struggled to contain her excitement, but her eyes couldn't help but glisten with tears as she choked out, "Grandfather. Is it really you?"
Wei Qiuxi walked over to Wei Ning and patted her shoulder, laughing, "Look how tall you've grown; you're all grown up now. You've done well these past few years. No matter what, you haven't brought shame to the Wei Family's reputation. Good job." He patted her shoulder three times and laughed heartily, his voice still booming as if it hadn't changed at all.
"Grandfather, where have you been all these years? Why did you disappear without a trace? Mother and I were worried sick! Where have you been all this time? You didn't even contact us," Wei Ning asked urgently, seemingly wanting to unload all the questions that had built up in her heart over the years.
Wei Qiuxi sighed and replied, "Where did I go? I went searching for something—something important for you, my unworthy grandson, for the bloodline of the Wei Family."
Wei Ning responded quietly, "What does that have to do with me?"
Wei Qiuxi explained, "I went to find an object. Only by finding this object can I save you and the Wei Family."
Wei Ning asked anxiously, "Did you find it? Where is it?"
Wei Qiuxi smiled mysteriously and said, "I thought about it for a long time and couldn't find it before, but now I have found it because it is within you."
"What?" Wei Ning exclaimed in shock.
Wei Qiuxi did not answer directly but instead asked, "Do you know about the Soul-Eating Doll?"
Wei Ning thought for a moment and nodded, "Back then, when I heard you, Brother Zhang, appeared in Changde, I had visited Hexia Mountain in Changde. Yang Na once mentioned it to Lin Lingsu."
Wei Qiuxi nodded and said, "Devouring Ghost, Devouring Ghost, it refers to Wei Xian Gui, that Evil Spirit." As Wei Qiuxi spoke the name Wei Xian Gui, a deep hatred flashed in his eyes.
"Wei Xian Gui?" Wei Ning asked, feeling a bit hazy about the name due to his lost memories of becoming a Blood Corpse.
Wei Qiuxi nodded. "Wei Xian Gui is treacherous. My grandfather, Wei Xianjun, knew long ago that this person would become a Dog Thief who would lead to the extinction of our Wei Family. Therefore, he placed a restriction on Wei Xian Gui. This restriction was the 'Devouring Ghost Spell,' which was meant to limit him so that he would die at twenty-seven, allowing our Wei Family's bloodline to continue. Who would have thought that Peng Bai, that fool, would bring Wei Xian Gui back to life and turn him into an immortal Blood Corpse? After the restriction disappeared, Wei Xian Gui harbored resentment against Wei Xianjun and recklessly sought revenge on the descendants of the Wei Family, ruthlessly seizing their Undying Bones. He also returned the favor by placing a blood curse on the descendants of the Wei Family, ensuring they wouldn't live past twenty-seven. This is why our Wei Family has been plagued by this vile curse for several generations."
Wei Ning interjected, "But Wei Xian Gui is also a descendant of our Wei Family. Why is he so cruel towards us?"
Wei Qiuxi replied fiercely, "That’s why he is a beast!"
Wei Ning asked again, "Then why did you—"
Hearing this, the hatred in Wei Qiuxi's eyes intensified. "Why did I spare that beast? It’s all because of my mother—your Great-Grandmother—and her deal with him. That’s why he let me off the hook." He sneered coldly three times, sending chills down Wei Ning's spine.
Wei Qiuxi continued, "Did you encounter the Nine Sons Filial Mother Formation on your first journey as a Corpse Driver?"
Wei Ning nodded. "Yes, I couldn't understand how someone could create such a sinister formation. According to its principles, an ordinary person only lives for about a hundred years. To form such an array would likely take over a hundred years; by then, people would have already aged and died. What would be the point?" Suddenly, an idea struck Wei Ning's mind. He exclaimed loudly, "Could it be that this formation was created by Wei Xian Gui? Only he could afford to wait as an immortal Blood Corpse!"
Wei Qiuxi nodded. "That's right. But do you know who this filial mother is?"
Wei Ning shook his head.
Wei Qiuxi sighed heavily. "She is your Great-Grandmother—my mother."
"Wei Ning" gasped, "Ah!"
"Wei Qiuxi" nodded and said, "But you don't need to blame yourself. This formation is an evil one, and once completed, it will surely bring disaster to the world. You are doing a great job by eliminating this threat."
Tears welled up in "Wei Qiuxi's" eyes as she continued, "It’s precisely because my mother made a deal with him, willingly becoming this filial mother to help him refine this harmful formation that 'Wei Xian Gui' agreed to spare my life." At this point, tears streamed down her face as she exclaimed, "Mother, how could you be so foolish? Do you really believe what 'Wei Xian Gui' says? He only wants your body of the Four Pillars of Complete Yin. How could you be so naive?"
"Wei Qiuxi" went on, "How could 'Wei Xian Gui' keep his word? He kills and seizes bones, leaving only me behind just to use my body for his so-called experiment to reverse fate. Ha! But unfortunately for him, his calculations were off; he ultimately failed."
"Why?"
"Wei Qiuxi" suddenly asked, "Have you read 'Journey to the West'? Do you know why those monsters are so eager to seize Tang Seng's flesh?"
"Wei Ning" blurted out, "Because eating Tang Seng's flesh grants immortality."
"Wei Qiuxi" pressed on, "In 'Journey to the West', aren't those monsters ones that have cultivated for hundreds or thousands of years? They have long transcended life and death and escaped the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Why do they still seek immortality?"
"Wei Ning" had never considered this question before and was momentarily stumped by "Wei Qiuxi's" inquiry.
"Wei Qiuxi" explained, "Because they can achieve longevity but not eternal youth. That is the distinction."
