Wei Ning sighed and thought to himself: In this vast expanse, where can one find a wandering soul?
Once a soul leaves the body, it loses any sense of direction, existing only in the realm of Yin and Yang. If one were in an open plain, where the flow of Yin and Yang could circulate evenly, it would be somewhat easier to locate a soul with the compass in Wei Ning's hand. However, in southern China, most areas are hilly, with high mountains, flowing waters, and dense forests that easily alter the flow of Yin and Yang. Thus, in these thousand-mile woods, where could one search for a wandering soul?
Moreover, after the Seven Days of Mourning for a lonely spirit, even if it cannot be reincarnated, it would be difficult for it to possess another body. Even if Zhang Mao's soul were to use Revival Incense, the effect would likely be minimal.
However, Zhu You's soul-calling technique was unlike any other Taoist Sect's methods.
The Exorcism Technique posits that wandering souls follow a cycle through thirteen meridian points. It is said that human nature is inherently good; thus, no one wishes to be seen as evil. The same applies to malevolent spirits; they believe that by traversing through thirty meridian points, they can cleanse themselves of resentment and gain recognition from the Yin Division for reincarnation. These thirteen meridian points are the origin of the Thirteen Schools of Blessing.
These thirteen meridian points see Evil Energy fluctuate from weak to strong and back again, creating a "deadlock." Vengeful Spirits wander within this deadlock and cannot transcend life, which deepens their malice.
However, these thirteen meridian points shift with the flow of Yin and Yang; identifying them is no easy task. Even if Wei Ning could locate them, it would likely take considerable time.
At that moment, the Rooster King was still clucking incessantly at Wei Ning's feet, pacing back and forth. Suddenly, it spread its wings and dashed out as if flying.
Wei Ning felt a stir in his heart and hurriedly chased after it.
The Rooster King pecked as it walked along, while Wei Ning closely followed with his compass. Initially, the compass needle wobbled slightly but soon began to shake violently until it snapped with a loud crack.
At that moment, Wei Ning finally looked up.
Evil Energy loomed ominously around an old wooden building creaking eerily. Inside was a deep alleyway that seemed devoid of life, as if cut off from the world.
Wei Ning frowned; he sensed there was something mysterious about this place.
Suddenly, the sound of firecrackers erupted from within, as if there were a celebration taking place.
Wei Ning quickly embraced the Rooster King and stealthily entered. This time he dared not let the Rooster King act on its own.
He crawled into a side room and saw a woman inside with long braids and a joyful expression on her face as she busied herself with something.
This woman was familiar to Wei Ning; she was the Self-Braided Woman he had encountered when visiting Zhang's family before.
"Lian," someone called out from outside. "Are you ready? If everything is in order, come out to pay your respects; today is your big day!"
Wei Ning felt an uneasy sensation in his heart. Sure enough, after a short while, a girl in her twenties, dressed in red and green and radiating joy, emerged from the house. She walked to the main hall, where a paper effigy resembling Zhang Mao stood.
Startled, Wei Ning activated his Yin-Yang Eye and saw Zhang Mao's soul attached to the paper figure.
Clearly, Zhang Mao's soul was no longer wandering among the thirteen meridians; someone had led him here.
Could it be that this old woman had taken Zhang Mao's soul and was now marrying him off to this girl?
The old woman wore a joyful expression as she sat in the Grand Master's Chair of the main hall. The girl stood before her, bowing three times and saying, "Mother, thank you for taking care of me all these years. Today is my wedding day; please accept this cup of tea from me. From now on, I will serve you together with my husband for life."
The old woman's face flushed with happiness as she accepted the tea from Lian and drank it all in one go. Chuckling, she said, "Here’s a red envelope for you," pulling one out from her pocket and handing it to Lian. She then took out another and placed it on the table, saying, "This is for you."
The "you" naturally referred to Zhang Mao.
"Alright, now let’s pay our respects to the earth. As Chinese people, we must follow the traditions passed down by our ancestors when getting married."
Lian also wore a joyful expression as she solemnly bowed three times. The old woman laughed through her tears, clearly very happy. "I never expected our Lian to have grown up; soon she'll be someone else's bride. I wonder if she'll still remember this old woman," she chuckled.
The two shared laughter and tears inside the room, which made Wei Ning feel a pang of sorrow. He sighed quietly and stepped outside.
"Are you not afraid that by summoning Zhang Mao's soul like this, he will never reincarnate and become a wandering spirit?"
The old woman and Lian were clearly taken aback by his sudden intrusion; their faces changed dramatically as they shouted, "Who are you? How did you get in here?"
Wei Ning replied, "We should have crossed paths at the Zhang family last time; I wonder if the elder remembers me?"
The old woman thought for a moment before her expression shifted again. "You are from the Zhang family?"
Wei Ning said, "I have followed Zhang Mao's soul all the way here. He is not dead yet. If I can attach his soul quickly enough, he can still live. But if you do not hand over Zhang Mao's soul to me, it would be considered murder. Of course, I will take action if necessary."
The old woman's face changed several times as she responded, "Hasn't the Zhang family already held his funeral? They even completed the Seven Days of Mourning. At this point, even a Great Immortal would find it hard to save him; don’t try to scare me."
Wei Ning sighed as he noticed that Lian had lost her earlier joy; she bit her lip and remained silent, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Wei Ning" said softly, "Miss, you are still young. You could have found a good family; why must it be like this?"
The "Old Woman" replied urgently, "This is our matter. Lian was raised by me; you don't need to interfere."
"Wei Ning's" words seemed to provoke Lian, and her tears flowed even more fiercely.
With a sigh, "Wei Ning" said, "Elder, please do me a favor. I must take Zhang Mao's soul back today; saving a person is as urgent as putting out a fire; we cannot afford to wait even a moment."
"But what about our Lian..."
Lian tugged at the corner of the "Old Woman's" garment and said, "Mother, let it go. If they truly have nothing, then we should..."
The "Old Woman" suddenly sighed deeply and said, "Why does my Lian cry so much?"
At that moment, the two of them embraced and wept bitterly.
"Wei Ning" knew there was no time left to explain further. The "Red Pearl" in his hand glowed brightly as he separated Zhang Mao's soul from the paper figure and shouted, "Liu, don't bully your brother!"
"I got it. Why did you wake me again?" Liu mumbled, clearly still half-asleep inside the "Red Pearl."
