"What is going on?" Zhang Long trembled as he spoke. "This is a serious matter. Should we call the police?"
"Don't!" Zhao Shun exclaimed loudly. "If we report this, we'll all be in trouble. It will be hard to clean up afterward. Let's just pretend we didn't see anything."
Zhang Long, feeling particularly anxious given the gravity of the situation, agreed with Zhao Shun's suggestion. After all, whether in the underworld or the legitimate world, he knew they were in over their heads. He nodded and said, "Master Wei, let's just fill this back up. We're just ordinary folks; we can't handle something this big. Let's act like we didn't see anything."
Wei Ning glanced at Zhao Shun, whose expression was strange, and said, "Alright."
Before Wei Ning could finish his sentence, Zhao Shun quickly interjected, "I'll help." He then assisted Wei Ning in covering the ground again, finally letting out a sigh of relief. "Zhang Shu and Brother Wei, let's keep this to ourselves. Just pretend we didn't see anything; otherwise, if we offend the underworld, we'll be in deep trouble."
Zhang Long nodded vigorously. "Absolutely."
"Let's go," Zhao Shun said.
"Where to?" Zhang Long asked in confusion.
"Of course, we're going to the Leng Family."
"Right, right! After such a scare, I almost forgot about the main business. Yes, to the Leng Family," Zhang Long quickly replied.
Zhao Shun drove Wei Ning and Zhang Long straight to the Leng Family's residence. The three of them were lost in their thoughts during the ride, each silent until Zhao Shun parked in front of a modest three-story house with red tiles and white walls—indicative of a relatively affluent family in the area. Zhao Shun seemed to know the residents well and entered without announcing himself. Inside were only an elderly man and a woman who quickly greeted them upon seeing Zhao Shun with guests.
Once Zhao Shun explained their purpose, the woman's expression darkened. She sighed and said, "It's not that I don't want you to see her; I'm just afraid it might upset her. She hasn't left the house in nearly three months now. She used to be more lively, but after everything that's happened... it's tragic."
Wei Ning suddenly spoke up, "Sister-in-law, can I see her? Maybe I can help."
"It's not that I don't want you to see her; it's just that she... she's not quite herself anymore. She gets frightened when she sees strangers," the woman lamented. "Poor child..."
"Please let us see her; she might know where my brother Zhang Mao is. He's been missing for half a month now. We've reported it to the police, but those useless bastards don’t have any leads at all! As fellow parents, please help us," Zhang Long pleaded desperately.
"Alas." Calm Mother looked at Zhang Long with pleading eyes, her heart softening. "Alright, but if Leng Jing doesn't see you, there's nothing I can do. Poor child, let's go." She took a key from the drawer and led the three of them to a room at the far end of the second floor.
Wei Ning approached the door, furrowing her brows in silence.
As Calm Mother opened the door, shouts erupted from inside: "Get out, all of you!" Something was thrown out forcefully.
Before anyone could react, Wei Ning had already slipped inside. The room was tightly sealed, almost airtight, with only a single candle flickering, casting eerie shadows throughout. Sitting on the bed was a girl in her twenties, so thin that she was alarming to behold; her eye sockets were deeply sunken, yet her long hair shone with an oily luster as she combed it with a bone comb.
"Sister Leng, do you know where my brother Zhang Mao has gone?" Zhang Long asked urgently as he entered.
"Zhang Mao," Calmly said, slowly turning her head while continuing to comb her long hair. Her voice was chillingly cold. "Zhang Mao, such a familiar name. Where is Zhang Mao? Where is he?"
"Calmly, what's wrong with you? If you know something, just say it; if you don't, then don’t act like this!"
"She is dead!" Wei Ning said coldly.
"Dead?" Calmly suddenly became flustered, vigorously combing her long hair and shouting, "I am not dead! I am not dead! I am not dead!"
"You are no longer Calmly. Who are you really?" Wei Ning demanded.
"I am Calmly! I am Calmly! I am not dead! I am not dead!"
Wei Ning suddenly stepped forward and grabbed Calmly's hair, shouting, "Why are you occupying Calmly's body?!"
Calmly screamed as Wei Ning held onto her hair tightly. "No! I am Calmly! I am not dead!"
"Then how do you explain this hair?" Wei Ning suddenly yanked at Calmly's hair.
"My hair!" Calmly shrieked. "Don't touch my hair!"
In Wei Ning's hand, the hair began to lose its luster gradually until it turned yellow and then white, resembling a tangle of weeds grasped tightly in her grip.
As Calmly looked on, a transformation began to take place. His vision blurred, and soon his pupils became unrecognizable. His face was covered in purplish-red blotches, and an unbearable stench emanated from his decaying body, which began to rot rapidly.
Everyone was left dumbfounded by this sudden turn of events. The first to react was the Calm Mother.
"My son!" she cried out in a heart-wrenching wail.
"Zhao Shun, if I'm not mistaken, that wig must have come from a hair salon," Wei Ning said, glaring at Zhao Shun with piercing eyes. Zhao Shun, already feeling guilty, suddenly knelt down under the intensity of Wei Ning's gaze.
"I don't know anything! I just wanted to make a quick buck; I didn't kill anyone! I didn't kill anyone!"
"What is going on?" Wei Ning shouted angrily.
"I... I..." Zhao Shun seemed unable to lie under Wei Ning's captivating stare. Like bamboo shoots falling from a tube, he spilled the whole story to her.
It turned out that Zhao Shun owned a hair salon, and recently it had become popular for girls to get hair extensions. To save money, he had made a deal with a friend from a funeral home to buy the hair of deceased women. Using the hair from corpses for extensions made his business thrive since it looked just like real hair (because it was real). However, as time went on, his friend from the funeral home grew tired of the hassle of cutting hair and began directly providing him with severed heads instead. Initially frightened, Zhao Shun's courage grew over time.
After shaving the heads, he buried them under a willow tree because it was located at Grave Hill, where they would be difficult to discover.
When Zhang Long called him yesterday, Zhao Shun was in the process of burying a head beneath the willow tree. In a moment of panic during their conversation, he inadvertently revealed the location of the buried head.
