Upon hearing "Phoenix Maiden," Wu Ma wiped away her tears and said, "I entrust everything to Fairy Lady. Once this is accomplished, we will surely express our gratitude."
The Phoenix Maiden folded several pieces of paper together and began cutting with scissors. Before long, she had created a figure resembling a boy. Turning to Wu Ma, she asked, "Do you have a mirror at home?"
Wu Ma quickly retrieved a mirror. The Phoenix Maiden smiled and said, "Your child must have had his soul taken by a water ghost. I will now use this paper to bring his soul back. Have someone take this paper figure to West Reservoir. Remember, they must hold it close and silently call out the child's name along the way. Otherwise, the paper soul won't know who it is."
Wu Ma hurriedly called for the child's father. The Phoenix Maiden then stopped him and asked, "Wu Ge, do you have Sky Lanterns at home?"
"Sky Lanterns?" Wu Ge was taken aback and shook his head. The Phoenix Maiden scolded gently, "Wu Ge, if you don't have Sky Lanterns, even if your child's soul returns, it won't know the way back. Never mind, I'll make a few more for you to release along the way. When you come back, light them all at once; that way, your child will recognize the path."
Wu Ge quickly expressed his thanks.
After working all morning, the Phoenix Maiden made about ten Sky Lanterns and handed them all to Wu Ge. He set off with the paper soul she had made for his child and the Sky Lanterns in hand. The Phoenix Maiden took out Wu Ma's mirror and applied a mixture of ginger water and other ingredients onto it. She lit three white candles in front of the mirror and said to Wei Ning, "Come over and witness this extraordinary thing from your aunt."
With a swipe of her hand across the mirror's surface, an image of a child gradually appeared in the candlelight, accompanied by a middle-aged woman who looked on with joy in her eyes as she gazed at the child.
