With a chime of the Phoenix Bell, a string of corpses followed the Phoenix Maiden, their bodies stiffly moving forward. Suddenly, the Phoenix Maiden sniffed the air with her cute nose, wrinkling it as she murmured, "Something's not right. Where could such a heavy stench of death come from in this desolate wilderness? It's strange."
She stopped the ringing of the bell and reached out to grasp the wind in all directions. Suddenly, she struck the Phoenix Bell towards Wei Ning's direction and shouted, "Who dares to disturb my path with evil spirits? Come out quickly and don't block the way of your auntie's Corpse Driver!"
"Evil Spirit?" Wei Ning looked around, but the forest was eerily quiet; there was nothing but himself.
The Phoenix Maiden nodded towards Wei Ning and said, "What are you staring at? It's you I'm talking about. Come out now!"
Realizing that he had been exposed, Wei Ning couldn't help but feel amused and bewildered. How could he, a fine young man, be mistaken for an Evil Spirit by the Phoenix Maiden?
The Phoenix Maiden shook the Phoenix Bell again and warned, "If you know what's good for you, retreat quickly. Don't covet my few God of Joy corpses. If you don't recognize what's good for you, don't blame me for being ruthless; my methods are not something you can handle!"
Wei Ning then understood that the Phoenix Maiden had mistaken him for a Zombie come to steal corpses. Zombies love human brains, and although these God of Joy corpses were already dead, they still held a trace of vitality. A freshly deceased person would be most appealing to a Zombie, so she must have thought he was following her because he caught the scent of these corpses.
He stepped forward, and upon seeing him, the Phoenix Maiden immediately tensed up in defense but gradually relaxed her guard. Her expression grew increasingly strange as she remarked, "How odd! Even from such a distance, I can smell your death aura—something only a Zombie would have. But why does it seem more vibrant as you get closer? Are you human or ghost?"
Wei Ning chuckled in disbelief and replied, "I am indeed human. I heard your Corpse Bell from afar and came to take a look. I didn't expect your nose to be so sensitive that you could smell a man's scent from so far away."
"So you're human?" Wei Ning nodded. The Phoenix Maiden's expression suddenly turned serious as she asked, "If you're human, what are you doing here in this desolate place? Don't you know that Yin People should avoid this path while Yang Persons should stay away? Why would you come here? Oh, I see! You must be after my beauty, wanting to take advantage of me in this quiet night! Am I right? Let me tell you, I'm not that easy to fool. But since you're not bad-looking, I'll let it slide." With that, the Phoenix Maiden lifted her skirt slightly. Wei Ning was startled and quickly turned his head away while waving his hands in denial. To his surprise, she wore thick long pants underneath and was adorned with beautiful patterns; he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Seeing Wei Ning's flushed face made the Phoenix Maiden unable to contain her laughter. "Just teasing you! You don't look like a bad person after all. Hurry up and leave; the Evil Energy here is too strong. Staying too long will shorten your life."
It was then that Wei Ning noticed when the Phoenix Maiden smiled, she revealed a set of pearly white teeth that sparkled like shells in the sea—each one as smooth as fine porcelain.
Finished, he shook the Corpse Bell in his hand. Turning to Wei Ning, he said, "It's getting late. I need to hurry. If I can't reach the Corpse Driver Inn ahead of time, those God of Joy will surely cause some trouble."
Wei Ning responded, "Is there a Corpse Driver Inn up ahead as well?"
"Yes, why do you ask? You're not one of Zhu You's people. Besides, the Corpse Driver Inn only accommodates corpses, not living people. You'll just get kicked out if you go."
Wei Ning nodded and said, "My surname is Wei. I'm from the Chen Prefecture Wei Family."
Upon hearing this, the Phoenix Maiden was somewhat surprised. "Isn't the Chen Prefecture Wei Family long extinct? How come there's still such a handsome descendant like you? No wonder your corpse aura is so strong; it turns out you're in this strange profession of being a Corpse Driver. A big man like you, out here in the mountains at this hour instead of chasing after women—must be that you can't find a wife. So you're out here feeling frustrated as a Corpse Handler? Since there's no one around, how about I help you out? Let you experience the pleasures of the mortal world. What do you think?" She winked at Wei Ning with a playful smile, eager to see his reaction.
Wei Ning quickly waved his hands in refusal. The Phoenix Maiden teased him further, saying, "Come on..."
Wei Ning was taken aback when the Phoenix Maiden turned back and said, "Aren't you going to find the Corpse Driver Inn to beg for some food? I'll go too; let me take you there."
Wei Ning nodded and replied, "Thank you for that. I just need to grab my bundle from up ahead; wait for me a moment while I get it."
"Hurry up! I can’t wait; the God of Joy can’t wait either," she said, waving her Phoenix Bell and leading the God of Joy away.
When Wei Ning returned, he found that the Phoenix Maiden hadn't gone far. Seeing him, she cheerfully said, "Let’s go! It's almost dawn; you know how to walk on foot and the rules that come with it."
Wei Ning followed the Phoenix Maiden as they wound their way down the mountain. Finally, they reached the long-abandoned Corpse Driver Inn nestled in the valley. The Phoenix Maiden approached and stopped the God of Joy behind the door. When the Boss of the Corpse Driver Inn saw Wei Ning and was about to inquire, the Phoenix Maiden interrupted, "This is a talking God of Joy; don't mind him. Boss, I'm hungry—can you whip me up something to eat?"
The Boss seemed quite familiar with the Phoenix Maiden; they exchanged cheerful banter for a while before he prepared a feast. Wei Ning had been starving and quickly dug into the meal with great enthusiasm.
After finishing their meal, Phoenix Maiden somehow acquired a motorcycle and called out to Wei Ning, "Come on, since you have nothing to do, accompany your aunt into the city for a spin." Before Wei Ning could respond, she dragged him onto the motorcycle and sped off.
Phoenix Maiden seemed to know the way well. Before long, they entered the city, and along the route, many people greeted her as if they were familiar friends. With her cheerful personality, Phoenix Maiden chatted with everyone, which was quite different from Wei Ning's impression of the universally disliked Gu Master.
Before they knew it, they had stopped directly in front of a dentistry office. As soon as the dentist saw Phoenix Maiden, it was clear they were old acquaintances, and he hurriedly greeted her. Phoenix Maiden lay down on one of the examination chairs, and a dentist approached with a smile, saying, "Phoenix, back for some dental beauty work? Nowadays, girls only care about their looks—eyebrows and all that—but hardly anyone pays attention to their teeth. I really envy your beautiful smile."
While Phoenix Maiden was getting her teeth done, Wei Ning had no choice but to wait. After a short while, a middle-aged woman burst in. Upon seeing Phoenix Maiden, she bowed deeply and said, "Fairy Lady, my Dog Boy seems to be possessed by something unclean; his spirit is lost. Please take a look."
