Wei Ning took a deep breath, standing tall; it seemed he was destined to be busy tonight.
He looked up at the sky, where the moon shone bright and clear.
"Actually, you don't need to go through all this trouble. My room is right over there, and what you want is also there," Lin Lingsu slowly emerged from the darkness, her hands clasped behind her back, standing ten meters away from Wei Ning.
Lin Lingsu was dressed casually in a shirt and jeans, her long hair tied back in a ponytail, flowing loosely behind her.
Wei Ning said coldly, "Where is Ding Ying? What have you done to him?"
Lin Lingsu stepped closer, now only five meters away from Wei Ning. He instinctively tensed up as she suddenly smiled and asked, "What’s wrong? Are you afraid of me?"
Wei Ning replied flatly, "A woman with a heart as venomous as yours would make anyone want to keep their distance."
Lin Lingsu moved even closer, now just three steps away. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a porcelain vial, handing it to Wei Ning. "Here you go, your precious."
Wei Ning was momentarily taken aback; he hadn't expected such kindness from Lin Lingsu and questioned, "For me? Do you really have such good intentions?"
"Forget it," Lin Lingsu tossed the vial into the air. Wei Ning quickly reached out to catch it and held it close to his chest, frowning as he asked, "Why are you being so generous? What are you really after?"
Lin Lingsu sighed and said, "The reason I'm being so generous is that this female ghost has no use for me. We kept her name because I knew with your character, you'd come rushing to save her without hesitation." She chuckled lightly and added, "Now that you're here, what use do we have for this female ghost anymore?"
Wei Ning responded, "If that's the case, why did you torment him so much back then?"
Lin Lingsu suddenly exclaimed loudly, "Because I was jealous."
Wei Ning was taken aback, not expecting Lin Lingsu to be so straightforward. Lin Lingsu glanced at Wei Ning and said, "I am jealous. I envy how close you can be with him, I envy her for being able to call you, call you that name. I envy how you protect him at all costs."
Wei Ning never imagined that the usually reserved and proud Lin Lingsu would suddenly change her attitude so drastically, saying things that even most daughters wouldn't dare to voice. But before Wei Ning could respond, Lin Lingsu sighed again and continued, "Wei Ning, I like you. Ever since I first saw you, I've liked you. Really, even though I often lie to you, my feelings for you are genuine."
Lin Lingsu looked at the stunned Wei Ning, her expression suddenly turning a bit sorrowful as she said softly, "You must think I'm ridiculous, but if I don't say this now, I might never have the chance again."
Wei Ning understood that what Lin Lingsu meant by 'never having the chance again' was that she had already set up the Net of Earth and was determined to capture him today.
With a sigh in his heart, Wei Ning thought how much better it would be if he didn't have the surname Wei or if Lin Lingsu wasn't from Dragon Tiger Mountain.
But this was the reality; fate had arranged for them to be mortal enemies in this life, an inescapable truth.
Suddenly, Lin Lingsu stepped forward and took Wei Ning's hand. He immediately felt the warmth radiating from her fingertips—a sensation he had experienced before but felt like a distant memory now.
"Will you walk with me?" Lin Lingsu asked as she looked at Wei Ning. Her once clear eyes were now filled with melancholy, subtle sorrow, and a hint of pleading.
Wei Ning exchanged a glance with Lin Lingsu, his heart trembling. He sighed, realizing that Lin Lingsu had come prepared. He probably was already caught in her Net of Earth and decided to see what she intended before figuring out a way to escape.
The night was tranquil, with the half-hanging moon nestled against the treetops, its cold light casting over the two of them. Lin Lingsu led Wei Ning toward a nearby hill that seemed like a perfect spot for a couple in love to share sweet moments.
Unfortunately, who could know that beneath the surface of this seemingly perfect match lay such profound discord? Perhaps in the next moment, with just a slight opportunity, either one of them would ruthlessly strike down the other.
The reason they hadn't acted yet might be that neither had found a flaw in their opponent. But more likely, deep down they both dreaded facing the inevitable moment ahead. They wanted to escape but found themselves trapped in this worldly snare. They were still young and vibrant; while couples enjoyed their time under the moonlight, what occupied their minds was how to eliminate each other without hesitation.
In the stillness of the night, the Mountain Mist hung heavily in the air. An Azure Heron screeched as it took flight from a tree. Lin Lingsu stopped in front of a low grave, holding Wei Ning's hand. She gazed at the lonely mound, which lacked even a tombstone, and suddenly smiled—a genuine smile.
"Father, Wei and I have come to see you," Lin Lingsu said.
Then, she knelt down before the grave and bowed three times. She tugged at Wei Ning, urging him to kneel as well. Initially reluctant, Wei Ning found himself unable to refuse the pleading look in Lin Lingsu's eyes. The once formidable Deputy Director of Dragon Tiger Mountain now appeared as fragile as any ordinary woman, evoking a sense of pity. His heart softened, and he half-squatted, half-knelt beside her at the grave. Seeing Wei Ning kneel brought Lin Lingsu joy akin to that of a child; she clapped her hands and laughed, "Father, look! Look how obedient Wei is!"
Lin Lingsu held onto Wei Ning tightly and sat down on the ground, quietly gazing at the moon above. As Wei Ning admired the beautiful expression on Lin Lingsu's face illuminated by moonlight, he sighed inwardly—if only things were different. A multitude of 'ifs' surged within him.
Lin Lingsu looked up at the starry sky, a faint smile gracing her lips. Her voice softened with tenderness as she continued, "Do you know? When I'm alone, I often come here to keep my father company."
Wei Ning remained silent.
"I grew up relying solely on my father at Dragon Tiger Mountain. I had no mother, and everyone bullied me. But I wasn't afraid because I had my father. He taught me that if anyone bullied me, I should fight back until they dared not touch me again. Eventually, I listened to him, and no one in Dragon Tiger Mountain dared to bully me anymore—except when I bullied others..."
Lin Lingsu turned her gaze to Wei Ning's profile, her eyes filled with even more warmth. "Then my father died. I knew he was killed because someone feared he would take their position. But I wasn't afraid of him; instead, I approached him and became his disciple."
"Is that so..." Wei Ning exclaimed suddenly.
"Shh," Lin Lingsu placed a finger to her lips in a gesture for silence and chided softly, "Lower your voice; someone might be listening. I only want you to hear this; I don't want anyone else to know."
