The Five Corpse Formation. Wei Ning's heart skipped a beat. Although he had studied under Wang Tuozi and was well-read, he had never heard of the "Five Corpse Formation." However, he knew that Peng Bai was inherently unpredictable and had a hodgepodge of skills, making him an extremely difficult opponent. Even Wang Tuozi held him in some regard, let alone himself! Whatever Peng Bai had concocted was bound to be vicious.
Suddenly, as Peng Bai manipulated the compass in his hand, five hidden doors appeared at the positions of Li, Dui, Kun, Zhen, and Kan. With a twist of the doors, five mirrors emerged, their surfaces gleaming white. Strangely, each mirror stood before a corpse.
The corpses were dressed in red with black hair, their heads bowed and eyes closed. There were three men and two women among them. Unlike ordinary pale corpses, their faces bore a peculiar dark blue hue, and their lips were an ominous shade of black.
With another gesture from Peng Bai and incantations on his lips, five beams of white light shot from the mirrors, enveloping the five corpses. Slowly, they lifted their heads to reveal long black nails and two protruding white fangs. As Peng Bai chanted his spell, the five corpses moved in unison, surrounding Wei Ning.
Wei Ning understood that zombies could be categorized into Purple Zombies, White Zombies, Green Zombies, Hairy Zombies, Flying Corpses, Wandering Corpses, Lying Corpses, and Unyielding Bones. If he encountered a Corpse Raising Ground, the most he could expect to deal with would be Hairy Zombies. Even the Walking Corpse from years ago barely reached that level. The presence of fangs indicated these were Flying Corpses.
Given Wei Ning's current abilities, he could manage to subdue a Green Zombie with some effort; however, dealing with Hairy Zombies would be quite taxing—let alone five Flying Corpses!
As the corpses stirred slightly, an icy chill swept over the area. Even Liu Linglang, usually lively and spirited, was taken aback by the cold emanating from the five corpses. She stood on the altar with wide eyes, staring at Wei Ning with concern etched on her face.
The five corpses moved as one—indeed they were Flying Corpses—swift as phantoms as they emerged from their respective positions of Li, Dui, Kun, Zhen, and Kan. In an instant, they blocked all possible escape routes for Wei Ning.
As he inhaled deeply, a toxic miasma filled the air. He realized that these five Flying Corpses had been enhanced by Peng Bai into Poisoned Corpses; if he made contact with them even lightly, it could result in severe injury or worse. Indeed, what Peng Bai produced was more lethal than poison itself.
With a loud shout, Wei Ning recited an incantation as a beam of golden light shot from his Yin Eye to ensnare one of the corpses.
Peng Bai moved his hand and formed a seal while sneering. "Child, do not forget who bestowed your Yin-Yang Eye upon you. If you think you can use it against me now, wouldn't that be like an old cat burning its whiskers?"
Indeed, the corpse ensnared by Wei Ning's Yin Eye not only broke free but also lunged at him with increased speed. Thanks to Liu Linglang's loud warning, Wei Ning managed to dodge just in time to avoid the attack from this Poisoned Corpse. However, at that moment, two other corpses clung to his back like parasites. Startled, Wei Ning quickly crouched down and swung his Red Umbrella backward just in time to block their assault.
Wei Ning thrust his Peach Wood Sword forward, piercing a Poisoned Corpse that approached him. However, the Flying Corpse showed no reaction to the sword's strike; instead, it lunged at Wei Ning with its outstretched arm, long nails aimed directly at his throat.
Realizing the danger, Wei Ning quickly abandoned his sword and rolled away, barely evading the encircling attack of the five corpses.
Unfazed by the Yin-Yang Eye, the Peach Wood Sword, or the Red Umbrella, these five corpses seemed immune to all of Wei Ning's spells. He had never encountered such a situation before and found himself in the greatest crisis since he began his journey.
The Five Corpse Formation was the culmination of Peng Bai's lifelong efforts and was indeed extraordinary.
This formation required five corpses that were of the same age and physique, with minimal differences. Finding such corpses was no easy task. Once selected, each corpse was paired with a vertical mirror of similar height and width and a jar. The mirrors were placed flat on the ground with their reflective sides facing up. After clearing any foreign objects from the corpses' orifices, five poisonous creatures—centipedes, venomous snakes, Golden Toads, spiders, and scorpions—were placed in each jar. These creatures would fight among themselves until only one remained. The contents of the jar were then ground into powder and used to burn the corpse's chin until it oozed corpse oil. This oil was mixed with the jar's contents and poured into all of the corpse's orifices, with any remaining mixture poured into its mouth. The corpse was then propped upright to allow the mixture to enter its interior until nothing remained in its mouth. Finally, the corpse was placed above the mirror so that its front faced the mirror's front. This allowed the corpse to exude secretions that would drip onto the mirror and solidify, forming the initial shape of the Five Corpse Formation.
Next came the nurturing of the corpses. Once they stopped exuding any secretions, their positions were swapped: the corpses lay flat on their backs while the mirrors were placed above them, reflecting energy from below. This allowed the five corpses to absorb death energy from beneath them, creating an artificial Corpse Raising Ground. This process depended on the practitioner's skill and could take at least over ten years. Peng Bai had been feeding these five poisonous Zombies with various toxins for years; thus, these Zombies were no longer part of the six realms and were impervious to all forms of exorcism. The five Poisoned Corpses had been eroded by toxins for so long that they became extremely poisonous; even a slight scratch could lead to fatal consequences.
This was one of Peng Bai's ultimate secret weapons for revenge. Little did he know that today it would be unleashed upon Wei Ning.
With a wave of his hand, Peng Bai adjusted the positions of the five mirrors, causing the corpses to shift formations and rush toward Wei Ning at incredible speed. Wei Ning pulled out a Fire Spirit Pearl from his pocket and hurled it at one of the Poisoned Corpses in an attempt to create an opening. However, although flames engulfed this corpse, it showed no signs of being harmed by fire. One corpse had already grabbed Wei Ning from behind while others surrounded him, their long nails poised to pierce his eyes.
The Flying Corpses moved too swiftly; even if Wei Ning attempted to unleash his Five Thunder Palm now, it would be too late.
In an instant, he lost Wang Tuozi's treasured weapon on impact with one corpse; on another strike, he found himself immobilized by another corpse's grip. Never before had Wei Ning faced such a devastating defeat; this time, he could only utter "My life is over!" before succumbing to death beneath their toxic claws.
Liu Linglang was terrified beyond measure and jumped down from her platform to save Wei Ning but was seized by Peng Bai as if she were a chicken lifted into the air. No matter how she struggled, it was all in vain.
At that moment, a delicate voice suddenly called out, "Peng Bai, do you recognize this?"
