Lin Lingsu shouted, "All disciples, heed my command! Set up the Seven Stars, Seven Kills, Seven Absolutes Formation!"
From the crowd emerged seven individuals, led by Li Xin, who responded, "Understood."
These alchemists from the Taoist Sect had a tradition of forming formations to combat difficult opponents, and the Zhengyi Sect was no exception. Among the powerful formations passed down through generations, the Seven Stars, Seven Kills, Seven Absolutes Formation was one of the most formidable. Just from its name, one could tell how lethal this formation was.
The seven spirits—humans, ghosts, demons, immortals, Buddhas, devils, and gods—were the targets of this formation, which claimed to eliminate all seven types of beings.
Li Xin and his six fellow disciples stepped forward, each taking a position at one of the seven vital points. They resonated with the Big Dipper above them. With their hands forming seals and feet stepping on the Big Dipper's mystical energy, they raised their left hands and conjured a blue-and-white bowl with their Five Dragon Fingers while drawing a talisman in the air with their right hands. In unison, they proclaimed, "One finger opens the gate; two fingers summon the Underworld. Disciples invoke the Ancestor!"
Their voices grew faster and their movements quicker. The Big Dipper's mystical energy was a footwork technique forged by the Dragon Tiger Patriarch through relentless practice. It emphasized three steps and nine traces; those who mastered it could traverse ten feet of land as if it were their own domain. By aligning with the constellations and the Eight Trigrams diagram, they could soar through the skies and summon thunder from the earth. Thus, in Taoism—especially within the Zhengyi Sect—this footwork was considered a fundamental skill for practitioners.
Lin Lingsu shouted fiercely, "Seeking death!" As she wielded her Thunderstruck Jujube Wood nails, several nearby Evil Spirits were struck down with anguished cries before turning to ash.
The Thunderstruck Jujube Wood was created when lightning struck jujube trees; it absorbed the electric energy and became known as “lightning-struck wood” or “evil-repelling wood.” This wood was revered in Taoist magic as an unparalleled divine material. The Thunderstrike Jujube Nails made from it were even more effective than peach wood in exorcising spirits. However, Thunderstruck Jujube Wood was extremely rare; it required jujube trees over fifty years old growing on mountaintops. Only someone of Lin Lingsu's exceptional standing in Taoism could afford such valuable materials.
As Lin Lingsu took action, those around Dragon Lake felt invigorated. Their livelihood depended on exorcising demons and ghosts; they quickly rallied to fight back against the advancing Evil Spirits. The streets soon became littered with corpses, filling the air with a foul stench.
Ning Suwen observed the battle reflected in a mirror and smiled slightly. With her Five Yin Fingers and stepping into the Five Yin Step Formation, she burned ten Golden Talismans in quick succession. Her eyes suddenly sparkled as her robe billowed without wind. Striking her Fire Dragon Token, she declared, "With one heart I beseech you! I call upon the five directions' five ghosts and seventy-two Earthly Fiends to swiftly enter Wei Ning's body and punish my enemies without mercy! By decree of the Great King of Ghosts, draw forth this person's soul immediately!"
Wei Ning felt a sharp pain in his chest; he struggled to hold his Peach Wood Sword steady. Ding Ying and Zhang Ye grew anxious; they had come to assist but now felt like burdens to Wei Ning, causing them great distress.
Lin Lingsu recognized that her master’s soul-calling technique had taken effect and quickly commanded, "Gather spirit into form! Net of Earth! Withdraw!"
The seven individuals received the command, surrounding Wei Ning in the center and separating him from Ding Ying and Zhang Ye. The seven Seven Star Swords encircled Wei Ning like the White Snake flicking its tongue, trapping him in the middle. Each of them had consumed a Divine Fist Talisman, and in their movements, they exuded the might of ten dragons and ten elephants, an intimidating force.
This formation was indeed the result of countless refinements by the Zhengyi ancestors, nearly flawless. Wei Ning found himself trapped within it, facing imminent danger. Ding Ying felt anxious, continuously calling upon spirits for assistance. However, these spirits were merely wandering souls without any real power; they could scare ordinary people but were no match for these Taoists, only leading themselves to doom.
Zhang Ye, though injured, continued to curse loudly, berating Lin Lingsu's ancestors for generations. Unfortunately, his leg had been pierced by Lin Lingsu's spear, leaving him unable to move as he sat on the ground.
Lin Lingsu remained cold and composed, constantly directing the changes in this deadly formation. Wei Ning struggled within it but felt as if a pair of eyes were watching him closely from behind, causing him to feel flustered and distracted.
Suddenly, Wei Ning discarded the Red Umbrella and Peach Wood Sword. His hands blossomed like a lotus flower as he swiftly formed several seals and shouted:
"Azure Earth Bright, Yin Zhuo Yang Qing, open my divine eye, distinguishing yin and yang, open!" A golden light shot from his golden eye directly into a disciple's pupil. The disciple felt as if his eyes were being scorched, causing him to slip and misstep.
Wei Ning would not let this rare opportunity slip away. He flashed forward, picked up the Peach Wood Sword from the ground, and hurled it at the formation's leader, Li Xin. At that moment, Li Xin felt as if his entire body was no longer his own. In a split second, the Peach Wood Sword pierced through Li Xin's shoulder. In pain, Li Xin dropped his Seven Star Sword. Seeing the opening in the formation, Wei Ning quickly dashed out and unleashed several Fire Spirit Pearls. The Dragon Tiger Mountain disciples were instantly engulfed in flames; they could no longer maintain their formation. What was once an immensely powerful array was easily shattered by Wei Ning.
One misstep led to total defeat.
Having escaped from danger, Wei Ning laughed heartily: "The secret techniques of Dragon Tiger Mountain are nothing but this."
Ning Suwen unleashed ten divine talismans in rapid succession; the Soul Snatching Formation was complete. For him, Lin Lingsu and Li Xin's "Thunder Action" was merely a ruse; capturing Wei Ning depended on his own Soul Snatching Great Formation.
Ning Suwen closed his eyes tightly, using meditation to sense Wei Ning's presence thousands of miles away. It felt as if both he and Wei Ning were trapped in an alternate space. He continuously searched for Wei Ning's soul using Six Senses; once he located it, capturing him with soul-snatching techniques would be effortless.
Amidst the chaos around him, Ning Suwen began to see a faint golden light in the distance. His spirit lifted with joy as he rushed toward it; the golden light gradually grew brighter and hotter. Suddenly, it exploded behind Ning Suwen, forming a massive eye.
Ning Suwen felt as if her chest had been struck by lightning. In an instant, her Six Senses were sealed. She let out a muffled groan and, after a long while, slowly opened her eyes. "So this child has no soul!" she said.
