The deaths of Zhang Kai and Sun Bing detonated like two heavy bombs within the school, further igniting the already tense atmosphere at Provincial University, which was already on edge due to Yang Luo. The connection between the deaths of Yang Luo, Sun Bing, and Zhang Kai spread through the campus like a malicious curse, leading everyone to speculate about a potential fourth victim. Various terrifying messages circulated, causing many to hesitate to venture out alone at night.
Particularly shocking were the deaths of Zhang Kai and Sun Bing. Almost everyone in the school had witnessed the tragic event firsthand. The bizarre motives behind Zhang Kai's actions and his bewildered demeanor before the incident fueled students' imaginations, resulting in numerous elaborate versions of the story.
Yet none of them were true, not even the police had any answers.
After years of investigation, they encountered such a strange situation for the first time.
Thus, Wei Ning and Guo Xiaofei were repeatedly summoned to the police station for questioning, leaving them both breathless with the demands placed upon them. On top of that, they had to attend the funerals of Sun Bing and Zhang Kai, leaving little opportunity for them to talk properly; every time they met briefly, they would part ways again.
Wei Ning's dormitory became known as "the haunted place" among Provincial University students. No one dared approach it; even those in neighboring dorms refrained from going out alone at night. Rumors about the lingering spirits of Zhang Kai and Sun Bing began circulating on campus, complete with times, locations, witnesses, and even supposed photographic evidence.
Wei Ning certainly did not take these baseless rumors to heart. He refused to move out of his dormitory because of them. Strangely enough, Guo Xiaofei also showed no signs of relocating and remained in their room.
Of course, no one dared to move in either, so the beds of Sun Bing and Zhang Kai remained empty, leaving only Wei Ning and Guo Xiaofei in the dormitory.
Finally, after completing all their obligations, both appeared in their room at the same time. Wei Ning sat on the balcony while Guo Xiaofei played games inside.
"Give me a cigarette," Wei Ning suddenly said, surprising Guo Xiaofei since he never smoked. Nevertheless, he handed one over.
Wei Ning took a puff but choked slightly since it was his first time. He coughed once before saying, "Today should be their Seven Days of Mourning."
They were indeed referring to Sun Bing and Zhang Kai.
Guo Xiaofei was playing a game, his mind elsewhere as he responded absentmindedly.
Wei Ning shot him a glance and asked, "What do you think happened to them?"
"Must be that last time in the Mortuary when Sun Bing got scared again. Zhang Kai couldn't take it anymore and acted impulsively..."
"Really?" Wei Ning sighed. "If it weren't for the fact that I had to leave for something during this time, I wouldn't have been able to stay in the dorm. I feel responsible for Sun Bing and Zhang Kai's deaths."
"This has nothing to do with us. It was just an unfortunate accident; the police have already closed the case, so that's that." Guo Xiaofei replied while continuing to play his game.
"Is it really just an unfortunate accident?" Wei Ning suddenly enunciated each word, dragging out the phrase 'unfortunate accident' particularly long. Guo Xiaofei merely hummed in response, ignoring him as he continued gaming.
Wei Ning lit another cigarette, and silence fell over the dorm for a moment. Guo Xiaofei struggled to find his rhythm in the game, repeatedly getting beaten and cursing under his breath before quitting out of boredom to browse the web.
"This cigarette shouldn't have anything 'extra' in it, right?" Wei Ning remarked.
Guo Xiaofei's expression shifted several times as he replied sternly, "What do you mean by that?"
"People can do things and watch things; some matters can be hidden from people but not from above."
Guo Xiaofei set down his mouse and said, "I'm going out to buy some late-night snacks. I'm done with this nonsense."
Wei Ning abruptly stood up, voice sharp as he warned, "Guo Xiaofei, I've warned you before. If you're playing tricks behind my back, why don't you listen? We're all roommates here; how could you bear to do something like that?"
Guo Xiaofei's expression changed dramatically as he stood up and said, "Wei Ning, what do you mean by that? You claim I harmed them based on what? If you have no evidence, don't make baseless accusations. Be careful, or I will sue you for defamation!"
Wei Ning let out a cold laugh and replied, "Evidence? Ha! You want evidence? You’ve been very clever, but you seem to have forgotten one thing..." Wei Ning pulled out a cigarette from his pocket and waved it in front of Guo Xiaofei, whose face instantly paled.
"When you handed cigarettes to the three of us, didn’t you already show your ‘sweat’? But you forgot that I don’t smoke, so I didn’t take it. And you also forgot to destroy this cigarette. It seems that there are unseen eyes watching you. If you want to keep something secret, you must not do it in the first place!"
Guo Xiaofei glanced at Wei Ning's cigarette but maintained his composure. "You think you can convict me based on this cigarette? Do you think the judge is a three-year-old child? In this world, everything requires evidence. Without evidence, don’t make a fuss. There’s nothing here for me; I’m leaving." With that, Guo Xiaofei turned to leave the dormitory.
Wei Ning paused for a moment, looking at Guo Xiaofei before saying, "So you're from Hengyang, huh?"
Guo Xiaofei replied coldly, "Of course. You know that already."
Wei Ning continued lightly, "There’s a rumor in Hengyang about a kind of dark art called 'Harmful Hand.' Are you aware of it?"
