"How about we go check out the Mortuary?" Sun Bing suddenly suggested with a mischievous grin.
Guo Xiaofei and Zhang Kai both jumped in surprise.
"What?" Zhang Kai exclaimed, staring at Sun Bing in disbelief. "You don't mean you have that kind of interest, do you?"
Sun Bing waved his hand dismissively. "No way! I just think it's boring to stay in the dorm. Why not look for something exciting?"
Zhang Kai replied, "Forget it, that's pointless. Let's just get some sleep; we have classes tomorrow. Don't want to oversleep."
Sun Bing scoffed, "I think you're just scared. No guts to go for it. I forgive you."
Zhang Kai shot back angrily, "Who do you think you are? If you want to go, then go; I'm not afraid of anything."
"Guo Aizi, Wei Ning, are you going or not?"
Guo Xiaofei and Wei Ning exchanged glances, and Guo Xiaofei timidly said, "Isn't it a bit inappropriate to go there at night…?"
"Chicken!" Sun Bing retorted.
"Fine, I'll go," Guo Xiaofei declared boldly, puffing out his chest like a man. "Let's go."
Sun Bing nodded approvingly. "Good, at least someone has guts. Wei Ning, what about you?"
Wei Ning was worried about the old man still being there. If they went and ran into him, things could get ugly. He quickly advised, "Maybe we should skip it. Those places might not be clean. If we attract something unclean, it could be bad news."
"Don't be a buzzkill. Look, even the short ones are going. How can you not join them? Do me a favor."
Wei Ning thought to himself: If I go with them and we encounter the old man, who might want to kill me to silence me, these people could also get into trouble. He firmly decided not to go with them and kept trying to dissuade them from such reckless behavior. However, after some back-and-forth, neither side could convince the other, so they had to give up.
With a smile, Wei Ning watched the three adventurers leave under the disdainful gazes of Sun Bing and Zhang Kai.
"The wind is howling, and the waters of the Yi River are cold; once a hero departs, he never returns," Sun Bing shouted in the corridor.
"What are you doing? Be careful... that's bad luck," Guo Aizi said as he handed a cigarette to Sun Bing and Zhang Kai, frowning.
Sun Bing lit the cigarette and began shouting in the hallway, "Spirit of the Earth, Supreme Lao Jun, heed my call..."
"F*** you!" came loud curses from other dorm rooms. Sun Bing and his companions swallowed hard and quickly ducked downstairs.
By now, it was late at night, cold enough to send shivers down one's spine. As the three walked along the path, they found it darker outside than inside, as if a great demon were opening its mouth wide to swallow them whole. The Mortuary was situated in a corner of the campus; distant streetlights flickered like ghostly flames. The night wind howled fiercely, shaking the poplar trees by the roadside, while fallen leaves rustled on the ground. The three felt as if they were carrying fifteen buckets of water—nervous and restless, their hearts racing like a rabbit trapped inside. Yet they dared not show their fear. Not knowing who started it, they began singing loudly together, though their voices trembled slightly. Thus, they arrived at the Mortuary.
The dilapidated crimson door was surprisingly unlocked. Weak light spilled out from inside, illuminating white corpse beds that looked ghostly under the moonlight, sending chills down their spines.
"Let's go in; anyone who doesn't is a son of a bitch," Sun Bing whispered.
Zhang Kai replied, "Sun Bing, I think we should just forget it. Why seek trouble for ourselves?"
Guo Xiaofei remained silent but looked as if a layer of frost had settled over him. "I'll open the door; you two follow me."
Unexpectedly, it was Guo Xiaofei—the one with the most courage—who took the lead in opening the door. The creaking sound echoed sharply in the empty night air, resembling a woman's mournful wail—soft and lingering, like a lamentation. At this moment, Zhang Kai's face had turned pale; clearly, the other two were not faring much better either.
Sun Bing turned on the flashlight and pointed it at the room filled with white beds. "Hurry up and look for her," he urged.
Zhang Kai grabbed Sun Bing's arm, saying, "That's enough. You know, when Yang Luo died... we should just go back."
"Are you scared?" Sun Bing asked in a low voice.
As the leader of the dormitory, Zhang Kai felt a surge of fear but dared not show it. He steeled himself and replied, "Alright, but let's make sure we don't split up. We must stick together."
Zhang Kai flipped the Guanyin statue out from under his collar and kissed it for courage. The three flashlights flickered in the mortuary, revealing their fear. It felt as if something might jump out from behind them at any moment. Yet, fueled by youthful bravado, none of them wanted to back down; they stubbornly held their ground.
But they couldn't hide their trembling legs.
Suddenly, Guo Xiaofei directed his flashlight beam onto a famous quote hanging on the wall and murmured, "That's strange. Why does it feel off?"
"What is it?" Zhang Kai asked anxiously, already on edge.
The beam of Guo Xiaofei's flashlight illuminated a portrait of Lu Xun. At that moment, the moonlight broke through the clouds, casting a clear glow that highlighted Lu Xun's famous saying: "With furrowed brows, I face a thousand accusations; I willingly serve as a humble ox for the children."
"Don't you think something feels wrong?" Guo Xiaofei asked.
