When a group of villagers gathered and made their way to the restaurant where Wei Ning was supposed to be, they found that both Wei Ning and Qiqi had already fled. One person timidly ran out from the building, pointing into the distance. "Over there! I saw that woman and that man running into the mountains!"
"Chase them!" A man in his thirties, who seemed to be the leader, urged as he led the group forward. Some carried makeshift hunting rifles, others wielded pig-killing knives or hoes, all heading toward the direction where Qiqi and Wei Ning had gone.
It was during Wei Ning's first encounter with the name Grass Witch, alongside Wang Tuozi, that she realized how well-known it was among these people. The reaction was overwhelming, and Qiqi offered no explanation. But at that moment, Wei Ning had no time to ponder; the pursuers were closing in fast, and she could faintly hear their shouts behind them.
"What do we do? There are so many of them," Wei Ning asked anxiously.
Qiqi scanned the terrain around them. The hills were undulating, with varying elevations, and as dusk settled in, both Wei Ning and Qiqi were unfamiliar with the area. They could only pick a random direction and run for their lives.
However, the villagers were different; they were seasoned hunters who knew these mountains like their own homes. They quickly caught up to Wei Ning and Qiqi. Feeling increasingly frantic, Wei Ning quickened her pace but suddenly slipped on loose soil and fell into a deep black hole below her feet, unable to gauge its depth.
In Xiangxi's rugged terrain, karst formations were widespread, with numerous caves and underground streams. Such holes were common; children often fell into them while playing in the mountains. The villagers would mobilize everyone to search for them, and if lucky, they might find them alive; if not, they might never recover even a body.
"Ah!" Qiqi cried out as she quickly reached for Wei Ning with one hand. However, given Wei Ning's weight, Qiqi couldn't hold on with just one hand. Wei Ning's body began to slip further down.
"Throw the cat!" Wei Ning urged desperately. "How else can I get back up?"
Qiqi hesitated for a moment before setting the cat down in an attempt to pull Wei Ning back up. But as she did so, she too lost her footing on the loose soil. With a loud crash, both Wei Ning and Qiqi fell into the cave together.
Fortunately, Wei Ning was quick-witted; she managed to grab onto a sturdy branch sticking out from the wall of the cave. Qiqi clung tightly to Wei Ning's waist as they dangled in mid-air. To avoid putting too much weight on Qiqi, Wei Ning instinctively squeezed her legs together, inadvertently trapping Qiqi’s head between her thighs. They found themselves in an awkward position reminiscent of "Jade Maiden Playing the Flute."
"What... what are you doing?" Qiqi exclaimed in embarrassment, gripping Wei Ning's thighs tightly as she tried to free herself.
"Don't move! This branch isn't stable; if you shift again, it might break!" Wei Ning said nervously.
"But your... your..."
Wei Ning suddenly became aware of the rather indecent position he was in with Qiqi, and his face turned bright red. After a moment, he stammered, "It’s just a temporary measure… so… so…”
"Just climb up already," Qiqi urged anxiously.
"Oh," Wei Ning was about to climb up when suddenly, he heard hurried footsteps above them. Clearly, those people were closing in. Wei Ning quickly halted his movements and said, "Don’t move. There are people above us. Just hold on a bit longer… we can overcome this."
At that moment, Qiqi's foot happened to catch on a rock, giving her a place to stand. However, her head was still trapped between Wei Ning's legs. At this point, Wei Ning's masculine demeanor was fully on display. Qiqi's cheeks flushed crimson as she slowly began to feel the heat radiating from him. Gradually, the area of his pants began to bulge out like a tent. Flustered and angry, Qiqi exclaimed, "You…" But knowing there were people above them, she felt mortified at the thought of being seen in such a position. She quickly silenced herself, holding her breath to listen for any sounds from above.
"It’s not like it’s the first time; why be so shy?" Wei Ning might have been accustomed to Qiqi's embarrassment, and secretly he enjoyed seeing her flustered. Watching her blush deeply made him smirk mischievously.
"Where are they?" A hearty voice called from above. "I clearly saw them just now; how could they disappear in an instant…"
"Why is the Grass Witch back in our village? Is something happening in our village…"
"Don’t jump to conclusions. In any case, if the Grass Witch is here, we must kill her immediately; otherwise, our village's children will be in danger."
"Right, everyone keep looking around." The voices above grew louder.
"What are you doing? Hurry up and get up here!" Once the voices faded into the distance, Qiqi urged urgently and pinched Wei Ning hard on the thigh.
"Ouch! Easy there!" Wei Ning yelped dramatically.
Wei Ning helped Qiqi hold onto the tree trunk while he climbed out first before pulling her up. As the moonlight began to rise, he caught sight of Qiqi's apple-like face and couldn’t help but chuckle slyly.
"What are you laughing at? Let me tell you, about today’s events… make sure you don’t go out later; otherwise… otherwise I’ll kill you!" Qiqi tried to maintain a calm tone, but by the end of her warning, a slight tremor crept into her voice.
The two fell silent, the atmosphere becoming uncomfortably tense. At that moment, Qiqi's Black Cat slowly approached. Qiqi bent down to pick it up, tidying her disheveled hair, and calmly said, "Let's go."
They walked in silence, one after the other.
"What is the Grass Witch? Why do people call Qiqi the Grass Witch? And why does it seem like everyone hates her when they find out she is the Grass Witch? They act like they really want to kill her," Wei Ning pondered, filled with questions, but Qiqi remained silent, making him hesitant to ask.
After all, he had just taken advantage of her in such a significant way.
"Where are we going?" After a while, Wei Ning could no longer hold back and cautiously asked Qiqi. Regarding their search for Yunmeng Ancient Marsh, Wang Tuozi had only instructed him to follow Qiqi's lead; he had no idea where they were headed or how to get there.
"Just follow me. I won't lose you, Young Master Wei," Qiqi replied coldly as she walked ahead.
"But it's getting dark. We can't just camp out in the wilderness. How about we find an Inn or a Charity Hall or something…"
"Pervert," Qiqi spat back. "Just follow me; we're almost there."
Qiqi led Wei Ning over a hill, and suddenly, everything opened up before him. Not far away lay Miao Family Village, nestled among the mountains and surrounded by flowing green waters. From a distance, a massive waterwheel stood out in the valley, creaking under its own weight yet managing to turn smoothly for over a hundred years. As they got closer, old mills, smooth stone steps worn by countless feet, and moss-covered wooden walls with black tiles came into view. Wei Ning found himself mesmerized; everything was so peaceful and harmonious. The mystery of this mountain region seemed to have remained unchanged for millennia.
"This is it—Peng Family Village," Qiqi sighed with relief. "We finally found it."
