Looking at the girl in front of him, Chu Donglin almost believed that she had returned to normal.
However, the vacant and ethereal feeling in her eyes was clearly no different from usual.
He could only attribute this to the lingering memories she had of him still at play.
He allowed the girl to hold his hand without pulling away, continuing to walk through the crowd while embracing Shishi and holding Xue's hand.
The scene resembled a warm family of three, evoking envy in those who witnessed it.
Some couples passing by couldn't help but cast longing glances at them.
"How about we have a daughter in the future?"
"But what if we have a son instead?"
"A son would be nice too; I would love either a boy or a girl."
"Really?"
"Of course it's true, you big fool. When have I ever lied to you?"
The sweet sounds of laughter between the couple gradually faded away. Xue instinctively stopped in her tracks, looking back at the boy and girl who were moving further away, her brow furrowing tightly.
"What's wrong, Xue?"
Chu Donglin noticed her unusual behavior and couldn't help but ask curiously.
The girl lifted her head to glance at him, then looked back in the direction where the couple had disappeared, her brow furrowed even more.
"They will die..."
Xue tightened her grip on Chu Donglin's hand, her brow furrowed in distress. "They will die tonight..."
Chu Donglin paused for a moment, understanding dawning on him.
"Have you seen their deadline?"
The girl nodded. "I can see it."
Ever since she awakened, the girl had developed a rather peculiar ability. Chu Donglin named it the Death God's Eye.
With these eyes, the girl could see the names of all living beings. Beneath each name were the dates of birth and death.
Honestly, it was a rather useless ability, providing no enhancement to combat strength. Moreover, when walking among crowds, she would often see names floating above people's heads, which greatly affected her vision and judgment. Therefore, she usually kept this ability turned off.
However, occasionally, the death deadlines of certain individuals would come into her line of sight, inadvertently caught by her—events that were unavoidable.
The man and woman before them were likely such a case.
Chu Donglin smiled gently at the girl, who seemed somewhat downcast. It was rare for her to feel sorrow over strangers; perhaps the couple's conversation had touched her.
After all, they were such a sweet and happy couple, seemingly possessing the entire world in each other’s presence. Yet unbeknownst to them, they were destined for death. Just thinking about it was quite saddening.
He squeezed her hand reassuringly and smiled softly to comfort her.
"Everyone must face death. No matter what has happened in the past, we will eventually return to dust. This is unavoidable; you need not be too sorrowful."
However, the girl's next words left Chu Donglin stunned.
"They will die tonight... in three hours."
The moment he heard those words, Chu Donglin instinctively looked in the direction where the couple had disappeared, almost wanting to chase after them and call them back.
However, amidst the crowd, the two strangers had long vanished, and even Chu Donglin could not find them again.
He could only shake his head and abandon the thought.
"Life is unpredictable; that is their fate, and we cannot change it."
The girl nodded, indicating her understanding, but her mood still felt somewhat downcast.
She lifted her head to look at Chu Donglin's profile and asked, "Have you found what you were looking for?"
"Yes, I have. I plan to go check it out now."
Chu Donglin smiled as he glanced at the girl in his arms who was nearly finished with her snack. After a moment of thought, he set her down.
Looking at the two girls, one big and one small, Chu Donglin clapped his hands and said, "Shishi, do you want to come with me to visit Grandma and Grandpa, or would you rather stay here and play? I can come back to find you later."
Shishi looked at Chu Donglin, pondered for a moment, and asked, "Daddy, will Grandpa hit me?"
"Of course not."
"Oh, then I'll stay here with Snow Sister and wait for you."
The girl replied sensibly.
Chu Donglin was taken aback for a moment before laughing. "Little Ghosts."
He ruffled the girl's hair, tousling her smooth locks, and then smiled as he bid farewell to the two of them before leaving.
The girl understood the hesitation in Chu Donglin's heart, so she chose not to accompany him, not wanting to add to his troubles.
For any parent, having their son return home is a joyous occasion. However, if that son has turned into a Zombie, such a reunion becomes difficult to accept.
Moreover, there was a group of Zombies following him.
The girl didn't want to burden Chu Donglin with worries, so she obediently decided to wait here, anticipating that he would handle everything before coming back to get her.
Standing at the street corner, she watched from a distance as a couple of figures waved at him amidst the bustling crowd. Chu Donglin inexplicably felt a sense of illusion.
It seemed as if his wife and daughter were bidding him farewell as he left home.
A warm feeling washed over him.
He smiled and waved back at them before disappearing into the shadows along the street.
Houlinc District was located in a relatively remote area of the base, far from residential zones.
According to Chu Donglin's understanding of this base, Houlinc District should actually be an area where military officers and base staff reside.
However, his parents were ordinary civilians before the apocalypse, both teachers by profession. No matter how one looked at it, they had no connection to those military officers. Why would they be in Houlinc District? Could it be that his father had secured some position within the base, perhaps as a registrar or some other clerical role?
This speculation arose in Chu Donglin's mind.
The dimly lit street gradually became less crowded.
Chu Donglin was moving away from the bustling areas towards the sparsely populated Houlinc District.
As he walked past a street corner, he suddenly froze.
He sensed a strange aura.
Darkness, coldness, dampness, distortion, evil, Fury, Agitation, Madness, Bloodthirsty, Cold-hearted… within the twisted and bizarre dark aura, there was almost no hint of light.
From the two figures sitting at the intersection with their heads bowed, Chu Donglin felt an odd yet familiar presence.
Deep Diver…
But it was slightly different from the kind of monster created by Acha.
He instinctively walked over and stopped beside the two individuals.
"Do you need help?"
He lowered his head, looking at the two people sitting by the roadside, smiling as he offered his kind inquiry.
They were two somewhat hunched figures dressed in plain black robes. Their heads were bowed, long hair cascading down to obscure their faces, making it impossible to discern their expressions.
The dim light from the streetlamp cast long shadows of them on the pavement, creating an oddly eerie atmosphere.
When they lifted their heads, Chu Donglin saw two normal faces.
A man and a woman—two perfectly ordinary faces, not at all like the Deep Divers he had imagined.
Even as Chu Donglin's pupils gradually changed color, ultimately becoming an eerie wine-red, the faces that appeared before him remained distinctly human.
He displayed a look of astonishment.
"Are these two Deep Divers?"
Before he could ponder further, the two individuals suddenly drew their guns and pointed them at him, filled with suspicion.
"Young man, your eyes..."
In that fleeting moment, they clearly saw Chu Donglin's eyes turn into an eerie wine-red color, but when they looked again the next second, they had returned to normal.
This discovery seemed to heighten their vigilance.
They jumped back, distancing themselves from Chu Donglin, aiming their guns at him.
"Who are you? Do you have your identity card on you?"
It was evident that they were questioning Chu Donglin's identity, suspecting him to be related to the Zombie.
Chu Donglin merely smiled, calmly pulling a white card from his pocket. It bore his photo and name, along with the base's seal.
With Chu Donglin's abilities, sneaking into the base and controlling those soldiers to create a few identity cards for him was not difficult at all. To avoid suspicion and handle unexpected situations, he had long been prepared for this.
Although the aura of these two made him somewhat wary, Chu Donglin had already ruled out the possibility that they were Deep Divers.
Perhaps... they carried something related to Deep Divers as well?
With a smile and an innocent expression, Chu Donglin spread his hands and said, "I just saw you two sitting here in silence and thought you might be in some trouble needing help, so I came over to ask... Is it really necessary to treat me this way?"
The two remained cautious and alert as they regarded Chu Donglin. After examining his white identity card closely, they scrutinized him several times before finally lowering their guns.
"Be more careful in the future. When you're out and about, not everyone will be kind to you. Don't recklessly offend others; you might not even know when you'll meet your end."
The man reprimanded coldly.
He appeared to be much older than Chu Donglin, but even as an elder, such behavior towards a stranger was exceptionally rude.
However, Chu Donglin merely shrugged it off, unfazed.
Would a powerful dragon be angered by an ant waving its arms at him by the roadside?
He simply smiled, bid farewell to the two, and turned back to continue his way toward Houlinc District.
Behind him, the two resumed their original positions after Chu Donglin left, continuing to whisper among themselves as if discussing something.
With his back turned to them, Chu Donglin wore a mocking smile, choosing not to expose anything.
Just a couple of insignificant fish... Hmph... (To be continued...)
