"Chirp chirp... chirp chirp... chirp chirp... chirp chirp..."
"Chirp chirp... chirp chirp..."
"Chirp... chirp... chirp chirp..."
Amidst the eerie sounds, a group of grotesque and strange monsters emitted harsh, hoarse shrieks, their wide eyes filled with hostility towards Chu Donglin's intrusion.
These were the same creatures that had attacked Chu Donglin on his way here, only to be easily dispatched by him.
Such monsters did not resemble any earthly beings; their fierce and malevolent appearance was more akin to that of Evil Spirits crawling out from the depths of hell.
Their bodies were a dull green, with white underbellies. Most of their skin was slick and shiny, but they had scaly ridges along their backs.
They bore vague humanoid features, yet their heads were fish-like, sporting large, bulging eyes that never closed.
On either side of their necks were constantly quivering gills, and their long limbs were webbed.
They leaped forward in a chaotic manner, sometimes using only their hind legs and at other times moving on all fours. Their hoarse, sharp vocalizations conveyed dark emotions that their faces could not express.
They surrounded Chu Donglin from all directions, filled with animosity towards the sudden intruder. Their bizarre eyes widened menacingly as they glared at him, emitting various shrill and hoarse cries.
In the midst of their encirclement, along the path leading to the Lotus Garden, a near-death body crawled slowly forward.
The battered figure seemed to have endured immense suffering, teetering on the brink of death; his eyes were hollow and devoid of focus. It was as if his gaze no longer resided in this world.
He wore the distinctive military uniform of Ark Base. His gun lay discarded beside him, yet he paid it no mind.
He struggled to crawl forward, clutching his neck tightly as he emitted painful coughs, as if someone were choking him with a rope.
Yet no one was touching him.
The monsters surrounding him merely danced joyfully, watching his desperate struggle as if it were a wild celebration, clapping their hands and making various strange sounds.
This man, Chu Donglin recognized. He was the captain of a team from Ark Base, and Chu had heard the Survivors call his name from afar.
Wu...
This man was named Wu.
On the few occasions he had seen him, Chu Donglin could tell that this young man was a calm and outstanding soldier, with an accurate judgment of the battlefield situation.
However, at this moment, he was writhing in agony on the ground, like a fish about to die on a chopping board, futilely struggling while being watched by countless monsters as if it were entertainment.
His eyes were hollow, devoid of any focus.
His face, like those of the Survivors, was filled with horrific fear, contorted to an extreme by endless terror. It was almost unrecognizable from his original features.
Yet Chu Donglin was certain that Wu could not see the monsters around him at all. That vacant gaze held no trace of focus.
Watching Wu desperately clutching his neck and coughing in horror, trembling as if he had seen an Evil Spirit, Chu Donglin understood something...
"What terrifying illusion is he seeing right now?"
Chu Donglin looked up at the only human... or what seemed to be human amidst the dark chaos of hell and asked aloud.
Amidst the countless bizarre and strange monsters, a beautiful figure stood out like a lotus blooming in mud, silently smiling as she was surrounded by the grotesque creatures, completely out of place against the dark backdrop.
She wore a fitted Qipao, the high slit accentuating her perfect and captivating curves. Her Snow White legs appeared exceptionally pale in the dimly lit Lotus Garden, and her red gown seemed to be the only vibrant color in this monotonous world.
With a playful smile, she looked at the suddenly intruding Chu Donglin without a hint of surprise. A paper fan opened up, covering half of her cheek. Yet even with just half of her face visible to Chu Donglin, she was enchanting enough to take one's breath away.
When Chu Donglin asked his question, she chuckled lightly, her enchanting demeanor captivating. Her beautiful brows arched gently, resembling a lovely crescent moon.
"What do you think?"
Even in her rhetorical question, there was a mischievous charm, coupled with a certain alluring grace that tugged at a man's heartstrings.
A broad smile spread across Chu Donglin's face.
"Are you the ghost lady from the legends?"
He waved his hand, and instantly, countless sharp objects that had been suspended in mid-air fell down around him.
Rubble, rusty metal scraps, discarded handmade knives, broken rebar... an array of debris accelerated downward with immense force bestowed by Chu Donglin, crashing through the air like unstoppable projectiles that whistled sharply as they flew.
Thud thud thud thud thud—
In a series of muffled impacts, streams of sickly green blood splattered everywhere.
Before the monsters surrounding Chu Donglin could open their sharp jaws to bite and attack him, they were caught in the torrential wave of assault. A bloodbath erupted among the horde of creatures.
The air gradually filled with a foul stench—the putrid green blood spilling from the dead monsters even began to corrode the wooden floor beneath them.
Surrounded by countless monsters, Wu, who lay on the ground struggling and screaming, had reached his limit. He desperately shook his legs, as if he were being hanged by the neck, on the verge of suffocation.
However, between him and Chu Donglin stood more monsters, hesitating and bewildered by Chu Donglin's terrifying power, along with a mysterious woman known as the Enchanting Red-Dressed Woman, who stood there laughing.
With these enemies obstructing him, Chu Donglin could only watch helplessly as Wu struggled with his legs, until finally his body grew still.
As Wu's corpse ceased to move, a group of monsters instinctively turned their gaze toward the enchanting woman.
With her fan covering her face, she maintained that captivating and gentle smile that tugged at the heartstrings.
She gently parted her red lips, seemingly uttering some syllables, and then a chorus of joyful roars erupted from the monsters, instantly engulfing Wu's body.
Chomp chomp—chomp chomp—
Amidst the chilling sounds of feeding, the sheer number of monsters made it impossible to see Wu's corpse any longer.
Within the throng of creatures, the enchanting woman smiled at Chu Donglin and softly opened her lips to ask,
"Dear Zombie, could you tell me your name?" (To be continued...)
