"Can we get those two pounds of chocolate in the end?"
"Of course not."
"But... didn't you say that Dai Yinzhi wouldn't stand by and let Li Zheng be harmed?"
"That's true, but a request for two pounds of chocolate is unreasonable. Even if Dai Yinzhi agrees, will the other Survivors be okay with it?"
Chu Donglin wiped the blood off his knife, his expression calm as he said, "If Dai Yinzhi casually gives away that much chocolate without providing a satisfactory explanation to the other Survivors, how will they manage this camp in the future? Aren't they afraid of a rebellion among their ranks?"
Liu Xiner glanced at Li Zheng, who was tied up and unable to move in the corner, and couldn't help but puff out her cheeks, glaring at Chu Donglin.
"Then why do you insist on asking them for two pounds of chocolate? Even if you ask, you won't get it. Why bother getting involved in this mess? Isn't that a waste of time?"
Chu Donglin looked up at the pouting girl and chuckled.
"So you still don't know why I brought you to this camp?"
The girl huffed angrily, sat down next to Chu Donglin, and punched him lightly on the arm. "How would I know if you don't tell me?"
"You never asked, so I thought you already knew."
Chu Donglin shrugged and said, "Why didn't you ask me?"
"Because Xing'er knows that uncle always has a purpose when he does things. Xing'er just needs to be obedient; after all, uncle won't harm Xing'er."
The girl raised a finger, her face serious. "If uncle doesn't explain, then there's no need or timing for it. If uncle wants to tell Xing'er, he definitely will. Xing'er just needs to wait."
As she made her solemn declaration, Chu Donglin couldn't help but look at her several times. He studied her from head to toe for a while until she began to feel a bit shy under his gaze, prompting him to smile.
"Foolish girl, if I were to sell you, you'd still have to help me count the money."
Liu Xiner wasn't angry at all. She smiled and hugged Chu Donglin's arm, rubbing her face against him as she playfully asked, "Would you really do that?"
"Of course not. A silly girl like Xing'er, who can be deceived once and fooled for a lifetime, is someone any normal man would cherish."
Chu Donglin chuckled as he pinched her nose and continued, "Now that you're here at this camp, do you understand what kind of person Li Zheng is?"
Liu Xiner glanced at the Suit-clad Youth bound tightly in the corner, frowning slightly.
"He’s not a good person."
After making her judgment, the girl looked up at Chu Donglin with curiosity. "But how did you know he wasn't a good person? He was so polite before and didn’t do anything strange... What gave it away?"
"It’s simple; just look at his subordinates."
As Chu Donglin wiped the knife in his hand, he explained, "This fellow does have decent acting skills. If it were just him alone, I might not have noticed anything odd."
"But unfortunately, he’s not alone. He has a whole group of subordinates with him... Look at those subordinates. How many of them seem like good people?"
The girl tilted her head, recalling her encounter with Dai Yinzhi and the others, along with the attitudes of the more than ten Survivors. She shook her head. "Indeed. They don’t seem like good people at all; they look more like thugs and ruffians."
"Exactly. As the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together. What kind of good person could be the leader of a bunch of ruffians? To give you a simple example, when your camp first started, there must have been some troublemakers around, right? Where did they go later?"
"Most of them were chased away by Sister Qingya. The few that stayed behind aren’t causing trouble like before; they've become quite well-behaved."
"That's right. A Normal Human wouldn’t tolerate ruffians causing chaos in their camp unless the order established there is fundamentally different from that of ordinary people."
Chu Donglin glanced at Li Zheng in the corner and said, "Especially as a core force of the camp, the Search Team is almost entirely composed of the leader's trusted confidants. Sister Qingya's rotation search model exists because everyone in this camp can be considered her confidant; it doesn't matter who she recruits into the Search Team."
"But ordinary people don't possess her charisma to garner the enthusiastic support of hundreds within an entire camp. As for Mr. Li Zheng, while he seems to have leadership potential, he is still too young and lacks experience. To reach Sister Qingya's level will take him at least a few years of honing."
"Alright, I understand how you figured out that Senior Li Zheng isn't a good person. But if he's not a good person, why are we even here with him? Even if they can't threaten us, isn't staying here just a waste of time?"
"How can that be considered a waste of time?"
Chu Donglin chuckled and raised his eyebrows at the girl. "Did you forget? There’s plenty of food in this camp that can help replenish our supplies."
Instead of feeling happy about Chu Donglin's words, the girl frowned even more in displeasure.
She looked at Chu Donglin seriously, finding it hard to believe. "Brother-in-law, do you really want to rob this camp? Do you want to steal food from these Survivors?"
That incredulous expression on her face would have prompted an angry outburst if anyone else had said such a thing.
"How can you think like that? We are all human beings. Even if we can't help them, we shouldn't bully the weak."
Knowing Chu Donglin's identity, the girl had already realized just how powerful he was.
Their encounters with High-Level Zombies had made everyone in their camp aware of what those creatures represented.
A Second-Stage Zombie entering the Survivor camp would spell disaster for everyone.
To put it bluntly, if Chu Donglin were to recklessly showcase his power right now, he could easily scatter everyone before the Survivors could establish their defenses and then destroy the camp.
Perhaps his strength alone wouldn't be enough to kill all the Survivors, but destroying this camp would pose no significant challenge at all.
Losing the advantage of numbers and the protection of the camp, these Survivors fleeing into a city filled with Zombies was akin to sheep entering a tiger's den. The chances of anyone escaping unscathed were slim, perhaps one in ten at best.
Moreover, such a large-scale commotion would undoubtedly attract many more Zombies, further compressing the already dwindling chances of survival for the fugitives.
Imagining the terrifying scenes reminiscent of an apocalypse, the girl excitedly clutched Chu Donglin's sleeve, nervously persuading him as if she feared he might rush out and start a massacre.
"Brother-in-law, can you let them go? Even though Senior Li Zheng has ill intentions towards me, he has already been punished by losing an arm at your hands. Can we just let him be? As for the others in the camp, they are completely innocent. Please, let's not harm them!"
Amidst her desperate pleas, Chu Donglin sighed and said, "This is why I brought you here... Sigh... Xing'er, you are so naive and adorable, completely unaware of the malice in people's hearts. I worry about you if you continue like this."
"Sister Qingya is a formidable leader; I admit that even I might not do better than her."
"But her protection of you all is excessive. She hasn't allowed you to truly witness the treachery that exists in this world. That's not a good thing. Some protection is necessary, but overly indulgent shelter can ultimately become a knife that could slay you... Xing'er, you are too kind and too genuine. Even now, can't you see the hidden evils within this camp?"
"Evil...?"
Liu Xiner was taken aback, somewhat confused by Chu Donglin's words. "Is there really something different about this camp?"
Just as her words fell, a cold voice suddenly came from outside the window.
"Chu, you have three minutes to release Mr. Li Zheng; otherwise, you'll face the consequences!"
Liu Xiner paused for a moment and instinctively glanced at Li Zheng, who was tied up in a corner and had passed out from blood loss. She felt puzzled.
"Are you wondering why he suddenly changed his attitude towards us and became so confident?"
Chu Donglin chuckled, addressing the girl's unspoken question.
Setting aside the Machete in his hand, Chu Donglin took Liu Xiner's hand and walked toward the balcony. "Now you can see everything hidden within this camp... those disgusting crimes, and what that fellow Li and his lackeys have done to these Survivors!"
The room where Chu Donglin was located was on the third floor of the residential building, with a balcony facing the square.
As they stepped onto the balcony, everything in the square came into full view before them.
At that moment, a man known as Dai Yinzhi, the Scarred Man, stood coldly in the center of the square, looking up at the balcony where Chu Donglin was. He spoke in a chilling voice, "Chu, hurry up and release Mr. Li Zheng, or you'll face the consequences!"
Surrounding Dai Yinzhi were numerous strong Survivors armed with weapons, forming a tight circle.
Within that circle, more than twenty disheveled women were huddled together like piglets ready for slaughter. These women were forced by the knife-wielding men to bend over and lie on the ground, crying and begging for mercy.
"Please, let us go... Wuwuwu... please..."
"Dai, I beg you to spare me; my husband is right here. You can't do this to me... Wuwuwu..."
A group of women wailed loudly while on one side of the square, over ten men were angrily roaring curses but were bound by other Survivors and unable to move.
The Survivors guarding them occasionally kicked the men to intimidate them into silence. (To be continued...)
