"I have always hated it when others threaten me with my woman—especially with such a disgusting threat!"
Amidst the gazes of the crowd, Chu Donglin's voice was chillingly cold.
The square, not particularly large, fell silent for several seconds. Then, one of the parties involved, Li Zheng, finally reacted, realizing what had happened.
"Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!"
The terrified scream echoed, a desperate wail that seemed to come from the depths of hell, sending shivers down spines.
"My hand! My hand!"
As Li Zheng cried out in agony, Dai Yinzhi's gaze turned icy. His fists were clenched tightly, filled with rage as he glared at Chu Donglin, completely unprepared for the fact that the other had severed Li Zheng's arm without hesitation.
"I tend to be impulsive; when my blood is up, I can't guarantee what I'll do... Mr. Dai, shouldn't you hurry and tell your men to disperse?"
Chu Donglin smiled lightly as he scanned the agitated Survivors around him. "Or do you want to watch Mr. Li Zheng bleed to death?"
Dai Yinzhi looked at Li Zheng, who was screaming and writhing in pain, his face contorted in agony. He took a deep breath.
"Everyone disperse and let him through."
The encircling Survivors received the order and quickly moved aside, clearing a path.
However, contrary to everyone's expectations, Chu Donglin did not lead Liu Xiner out of the area. Instead, he headed toward an abandoned residential building within the district while dragging the sobbing and wailing Li Zheng along.
Originally, there were seven residential buildings in the area, but with only over five hundred Survivors, it was impossible for them to occupy all of them.
In order to facilitate management, Li Zheng and Dai Yinzhi had gathered these Survivors in several nearby residential buildings, leaving many of the apartments unoccupied.
At that moment, Chu Donglin was taking Li Zheng to one of those deserted buildings, which was completely empty and devoid of residents.
For these uninhabited apartments, Li Zheng and his group had only cleared out the Zombies inside at the beginning. They took away anything useful and rarely returned afterward.
Now, as Chu Donglin led Li Zheng and Liu Xiner toward that building, a look of furious astonishment appeared on Dai Yinzhi's face.
"Chu, what do you think you're doing?"
It was clear they were supposed to leave; why was this man still lingering? His heart was filled with rage.
"I'm not going anywhere until you obediently deliver the food," Chu Donglin replied.
He glanced back at Dai Yinzhi with a faint smile. "Since I'm here, how could I just leave casually?"
Noticing Dai Yinzhi's sinister expression, Chu Donglin added, "By the way, I have specific demands regarding the food. Don't even think about trying to pass off some instant noodles or junk food on me. I want high-calorie food, like chocolate... Prepare two pounds of chocolate for me, along with enough bottled water, and I'll release Li Zheng."
High-calorie chocolate was an exceptionally precious commodity in this apocalyptic world.
Having enough chocolate could even turn these Survivors, who were struggling on the brink of starvation, against each other. The demand for two pounds of chocolate was simply unreasonable.
Dai Yinzhi's expression turned extremely furious. He couldn't help but roar in response.
"Chu! Don't go too far!"
Such an outrageous demand would be intolerable for anyone, not just Dai Yinzhi. Even the expressions on the faces of the other Survivors darkened.
Originally, Li Zheng was held hostage, and they did not have much of a reaction.
Chu Donglin demanded Dai Yinzhi bring food to ransom him. They still did not respond significantly.
However, when Chu Donglin made an outrageous demand for two pounds of chocolate, it exceeded everyone's tolerance.
Such a large quantity of chocolate was nearly half of the base's entire chocolate supply.
In their camp, chocolate was an exceptionally important item.
Typically, only teams that went out to search for food were eligible to receive a piece of chocolate each.
Moreover, unless something unexpected happened along the way, these chocolates would be collected upon returning to the base. Only those who had truly accomplished great feats were entitled to receive chocolate as a reward.
For the currently food-scarce Survivors, chocolate was an easily accessible source of sustenance and was considered emergency food—something everyone eagerly sought after.
Within the camp, chocolate had almost become a strategic reserve material; even the leaders, Li Zheng and Dai Yinzhi, dared not touch it lightly.
Chu Donglin's unreasonable demand instantly reignited the tension that had just begun to ease.
Cutting off someone's financial resources is akin to killing their parents; however, Chu Donglin's current request was even more excessive—it was like wielding a knife to carve flesh from all the Survivors.
Without needing Dai Yinzhi to speak up, all the Survivors surrounded Chu Donglin, glaring coldly at him. If he showed even the slightest sign of weakness, he would undoubtedly face a storm of attacks from them.
Yet amidst the tense atmosphere, Chu Donglin seemed oblivious. He maintained a calm smile on his face as he slowly dragged Li Zheng toward the vacant residential building.
"I will bandage Mr. Li Zheng's wounds so that he doesn't die from excessive blood loss. But my patience is limited; I have no interest in wasting time here with you."
As Liu Xiner disappeared down the staircase of the residential building, Chu Donglin's voice was unusually calm, leaving no doubt about his determination.
"I can give you time to think it over, but every half hour, I will remove a part from Mr. Li Zheng and throw it out. It could be an arm, a leg... or perhaps some other parts of his body."
In the last second before vanishing into the darkness, Chu Donglin turned back to look at Dai Yinzhi's cold expression and smiled brightly.
"If you truly want to repay him, don't wait until he becomes a complete cripple before bringing him food... I believe that outcome is not what you desire either."
With those words, Chu Donglin took Liu Xiner and disappeared from everyone's sight, leaving only Li Zheng's desperate screams echoing from the staircase.
"Did you hear that? Dai! Hurry up and bring the food over?! Move it! Do you really want to watch me die? Huh?! Is this your loyalty? Is this your repayment? You bastard, hurry up and get something over here?!"
In the square, listening to Li Zheng's frantic roars, a group of Survivors exchanged glances, instinctively looking at the silent Dai Yinzhi, unsure of what to do.
Standing in the square, Li Zheng's anguished cries and curses continued to ring out. After several seconds of silence, Dai Yinzhi took a deep breath.
"Surround this building; don’t let anyone inside escape."
Pausing for a moment, he glanced at the restless crowd and said coldly, "Also, until I give my orders, no one is allowed to enter that building and provoke that bastard named Chu. If anything happens to Mr. Li, I’ll make sure that fellow experiences the pain of being crippled as well!"
After issuing this command, Dai Yinzhi walked toward several nearby residential buildings.
Meanwhile, the commotion in the square had attracted everyone's attention. Numerous Dodo Survivors poked their heads out from windows, silently observing the situation.
Without waiting for Dai Yinzhi to call for help, many clever Survivors armed themselves and rushed out from the residential building to join the effort of surrounding the building where Chu Donglin was located.
As for other Survivors who had not received orders and dared not act rashly, they also stepped out of their homes and gathered in the square, quietly awaiting Dai Yinzhi's next command.
"Master Dai, um... do we really have to listen to that fellow and hand over the chocolate to him?"
Watching Dai Yinzhi sitting coldly on the steps, a Survivor hesitated for a long time before finally asking the question that everyone was concerned about.
Dai Yinzhi lifted his head, casting a cold glance at him, and snorted, "Do you think that's possible?"
"Of course not."
Chu Donglin settled down on the sofa, lazily stretching his back. "Given the scale of this Survivor camp and its location, two pounds of chocolate is probably about a third or even half of their total reserves."
"With so much chocolate at stake, if Dai Yinzhi doesn't want to provoke public outrage, he can't just casually offer it up in exchange for someone. After all, you can see it too; although both are leaders of Survivor camps, in terms of personal charisma and support from their people, this Mr. Li is far behind Sister Qingya."
"If someone in your camp were to threaten you with Sister Qingya like this, I bet they wouldn't just ask for half the chocolate; they could even demand all of it without any issue... But unfortunately, this Mr. Li Zheng looks decent enough, yet his support within the camp isn't very high."
Chu Donglin glanced at Li Zheng, who was tied up in the corner of the room, and teased, "After all, communication between people is reciprocal. How you treat others usually reflects how they will treat you in return. Sister Qingya treats people sincerely and naturally earns their support. In terms of being a leader and a boss, our Mr. Li Zheng still has a long way to go compared to her."
Hearing Chu Donglin's explanation, Liu Xiner became even more confused. "If that's the case, then why does he still demand so much... Brother-in-law, aren't you afraid that if negotiations break down, they might resort to extreme measures?"
"Heh heh... You don't need to worry about that. I have quite a bit of confidence when it comes to reading people."
Chu Donglin wiped the blood off his machete and said, "Although Dai Yinzhi isn't exactly a good person, he is somewhat loyal. Since he owes Li Zheng his life after being saved by him, both emotionally and logically, he won't just sit back and watch me take down Li Zheng." (To be continued...)
