The rain fell heavily.
The pouring rain soaked Chu Donglin's body.
He stood on the empty street, silently watching the girl before him, slowly exhaling a breath of mist.
"Long time no see."
In the dim light of the streetlamp, half of his face was shrouded in shadow, making his expression appear somewhat sinister.
The man who suddenly emerged from the darkness startled Liu Mengying. Once she recognized his face, she hurriedly held up her umbrella and moved closer to Chu Donglin, sheltering the rain-soaked man under its cover.
Looking at this familiar yet weary man, Liu Mengying's eyes were filled with concern.
"Chu Donglin, you’re not…"
Suddenly, she thought of something and instinctively glanced at her younger sister beside her.
As her sister's gaze met hers, Liu Xiner obediently held up the umbrella and stepped aside, distancing herself from their line of sight.
"Sister, I'll wait for you up ahead."
Watching Liu Xiner's figure disappear around the corner of the flowerbed, Liu Mengying anxiously grasped Chu Donglin's hand.
"Weren't you supposed to leave? Why are you back? You idiot! Do you know you're wanted all over the city? It took so much effort to get rid of you; why did you come back?"
As she spoke, the girl nervously tugged at Chu Donglin's hand, wanting to leave. However, he turned his grip and held onto Liu Mengying.
"I came to see you."
He said this while gently patting the back of her hand, slowly exhaling a breath of mist. "And then to take you home."
"Home?"
Liu Mengying was momentarily stunned, not understanding his meaning. "You want to meet my father?"
"No, I'm here to take you back to my home," Chu Donglin replied calmly. "We're going to Wangcheng, and we won't come back. Once we leave Wocheng, your father won't be able to stop us."
"But you're wanted right now!"
Liu Mengying was extremely anxious, nervously glancing around the empty streets in the pouring rain. Although the streets were deserted and devoid of any people, her heart was filled with unease, as if police could jump out from the darkness at any moment to apprehend the man before her.
Desperately looking at Chu Donglin, Liu Mengying tried to persuade him, "Can we leave this place first? It's too dangerous here. Once we get away, we can talk about other things... okay?"
"It's unnecessary, Meng Ying."
Chu Donglin looked at the anxious girl before him and gave a bitter smile. "I'm no longer a wanted criminal... at least I won't be for long. So even if I'm caught, it doesn't matter."
Liu Mengying looked at him in surprise. "Did you find out who framed you?"
"Ah... I did."
Chu Donglin's expression remained calm as he said, "I've made it clear with him; he will hand over the real culprit to clear my name, so there's no need to worry about my status as a wanted criminal anymore."
Liu Mengying was taken aback. With the dim light from the streetlamp, she finally noticed Chu Donglin's pale complexion.
"Chu Donglin, your face..."
Her gaze shifted downward, and she saw the wound on his waist. Panic surged within her. "You're hurt? What happened? Why are you injured? Who is this mastermind? Why did they frame you? Did they do this to you?"
In a hurry, she pulled out her phone and began dialing emergency services.
"Don't worry, I'll call an ambulance right away. You won't be in any danger."
A wet hand grasped her phone, pulling it away from her.
Liu Mengying looked up, staring blankly at Chu Donglin as he turned off the phone, confusion etched on her face.
"Chu Donglin, what are you doing?"
"It's nothing. This little injury isn't a big deal, and there's no time for that..."
Chu Donglin silently powered down the phone. Once the screen went completely black, he tossed the device into the flowerbed beside him. "I'm being hunted; there's no need to go to the hospital."
"Hunted? What happened? Chu Donglin, please tell me what's going on!"
Liu Mengying tightly grasped Chu Donglin's hand, her expression filled with urgency. "Is there anything we can't share? Who is chasing you? Why are they after you?"
"The one hunting me is the mastermind behind my framing, and he pursues me because of an agreement between us."
Chu Donglin raised a finger and continued quietly, "I uncovered his deeds and then broke into his home, holding a knife to his throat to force him to clear my name."
"Though it's a crude and reckless method, I had no choice; such brutality can be quite effective at times."
Liu Mengying was taken aback as she gently touched the wound on Chu Donglin's side, her heart aching for him.
"So your injury..."
"I inflicted it myself when I left."
Under Liu Mengying's astonished gaze, Chu Donglin calmly explained, "That cut was something I owed him. No matter what he did, he is still my elder. Even with all his faults, my actions of threatening him were still inappropriate. Plus, I was taking away his most beloved person. So I gave him that cut; from now on, we are even."
"Elder? Owe him... his most beloved person..."
Liu Mengying suddenly displayed a look of terror, gripping Chu Donglin's hand tightly. "You... he... I... he is..."
That title seemed to hold a terrifying power, rendering her unable to speak further.
Yet, as the two locked eyes, they both understood each other's thoughts.
Chu Donglin nodded, calmly delivering the cruel answer. "Yes, the mastermind behind this is your father."
Liu Mengying's body trembled as if she had received a tremendous blow, her face turning pale.
"How did it come to this..."
However, Liu Mengying's sorrow did not stop Chu Donglin from continuing his explanation. He met her gaze steadily and spoke each word with clarity.
"I made a deal with him. He will clear my name tomorrow morning. But before that, I must leave Wocheng alive. If I die during this time, he won't help me clear my name. So I have to leave Wocheng before dawn."
"Of course, since it's a gamble, seeking help from any official organization is not allowed. So going to a hospital or police station for refuge is naturally out of the question."
With that, Chu Donglin tightened his grip on Liu Mengying's hand, speaking calmly yet firmly.
"Come with me, Meng Ying. We'll leave Wocheng and go to a place where your father can never interfere. Until I have the power to confront him directly, we will return... I already have a concrete plan. Trust me, it won't take long. By then, your father will have no reason to keep us apart."
