Chu Donglin's appearance only made Liu Xiner more curious.
"What do you mean it's all your fault? Brother-in-law, did you do something? Why is it like this? Did you make a mistake?"
"Well... it's complicated, really complicated. In short, it's all my fault."
Chu Donglin rubbed his temples in distress, leaning back on the sofa with his eyes closed, murmuring to himself, "I might as well change my name to Chu Shichen since everything is my fault."
"What nonsense! In Xing'er's eyes, Brother-in-law can never be wrong."
The girl propped her chin up while sitting beside Chu Donglin, looking at his troubled expression and smiling cheerfully. "Just tell me what happened; let Xing'er help you think it through."
She hugged one of Chu Donglin's arms and shook it back and forth, pleading, "Come on, let Xing'er hear what happened!"
"Stop shaking! If you keep this up, you'll break my arm."
Instead of letting go, the girl shook even more vigorously. "Come on! How can Xing'er know what happened if you don't tell me... come on!"
"Alright, alright, I give in."
Chu Donglin sat up helplessly and sighed. "Actually, it's not a big deal. I'm just... um... I've been a bit troubled lately."
Sitting on the sofa, Chu Donglin stared blankly at the sunset outside the window and murmured, "Xing'er, can I ask you a question?"
"Uh-huh, Xing'er is listening."
"If... I mean if you suddenly found out that someone you always considered family actually has feelings for you... um, like romantic feelings between a man and a woman. What would you do in that situation?"
The girl stiffened for a moment, her previously playful expression turning pale and devoid of color.
She stared blankly at Chu Donglin's profile, her mouth opening slightly as her lips trembled lightly. "Sister... Brother-in-law..."
Chu Donglin did not notice the girl's unusual behavior.
He remained lost in thought, gazing out at the sunset, the image of the girl Shishi faintly appearing in his mind, along with the strange behavior of Girl over the past few days.
"Actually, I know she might not really like me. She's just... well, she's been disturbed by some strange things that have clouded her judgment, leading to a misunderstanding."
"But that kind of thinking is wrong. After all, I am her elder. No matter how much I spoil her usually, I can't agree to this kind of thing... But she hasn't made her feelings clear yet, so even if I want to refuse, I don't know how to start."
"Thinking about it makes my head feel like it's going to explode."
With every word of complaint from Chu Donglin, the expression on the girl's face grew more desperate.
By the time he finished speaking, Liu Xiner's eyes were filled with deep despair and disbelief.
She hesitantly reached out her hand as if to grasp Chu Donglin's, but that hand struggled in mid-air, wavering and trembling. In the end, she didn't dare to extend it.
"What are we supposed to do? Xing'er? You usually have the best ideas. You seem so obedient and gentle, but you're actually quite clever. I'm not good at handling situations like this; if I'm not careful, I might hurt that Girl... What should we do? At least give me a suggestion; what does your silence mean?"
"Hmm? Xing'er? Why aren't you..."
Chu Donglin turned his head in confusion and saw the girl looking at him with a face full of despair, tears silently streaming down her beautiful eyes.
He paused for a moment and instinctively reached out his right hand, gently wiping away the tears on her cheek with his fingers.
"You... cried?"
The moment his fingers touched her skin, the girl suddenly snapped back to reality and quickly lowered her head, turning away. "I... I'm not crying."
However, the sound of her sobs and the way she turned her back to wipe her tears could fool no one.
As she continued to sob, her shoulders trembled slightly, rendering her claim of not crying utterly unconvincing.
Chu Donglin fell silent for a moment and gently patted the girl's shoulder. "What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly crying? I just told you a story, and you still need to help me brainstorm ideas. Why are you crying? Is my situation that touching? I had no idea."
"It’s not your fault; it’s my own fault... It’s Xing'er’s fault, not my brother-in-law's mistake."
The girl murmured through her sobs, her words dripping with sadness and self-blame that even a fool could discern. Her pitiful appearance was heart-wrenching.
Yet, as he looked at the girl in such a vulnerable state, Chu Donglin's expression suddenly changed.
He abruptly withdrew his right hand as if he had been electrocuted, stepping back in terror several paces, distancing himself from the girl’s frail figure.
"You... you..."
Pointing at the girl’s sobbing back, Chu Donglin finally realized something was amiss. A look of disbelief crossed his face.
"You... you can’t possibly... no, no! This can’t be true! This isn’t real!"
As he continued to retreat, shaking his head, confusion and turmoil filled his expression, as if he were baffled by how things had come to this.
"This absolutely cannot be true!"
He kept shaking his head, but those pale words sounded more like self-deception than anything else, lacking any credibility.
"But it is true!"
The girl suddenly erupted, crying out, "So you’ve only just realized? All these years, I thought you had already known!"
Crying, with tears streaming down her face, the girl turned around and rushed towards him, her emotions running high. "Brother-in-law! Did you only just realize what Xing'er has been thinking all this time?"
Chu Donglin instinctively raised a hand to block the girl from throwing herself into his arms.
He swallowed hard, looking at the girl before him, her face a mess of tears and sorrow. Her red, defiant eyes were fixed on him, causing him to instinctively avoid her unwavering gaze.
"Don't joke around, Xing'er. This isn't funny at all."
"I'm not joking!" The girl clutched Chu Donglin's hand tightly, her swollen eyes staring defiantly at him as she cried out hoarsely, "I'm serious! I've always been serious! I'm definitely not joking with you! Brother-in-law, I love..."
The rest of her words were muffled by Chu Donglin's right hand covering her mouth.
He took a deep breath, watching as the girl struggled to speak, her face filled with anguish as she looked at him. He slowly said, "You can't... that phrase is off-limits... Be good, that phrase is off-limits."
Chu Donglin and the girl locked eyes, both with swollen, tear-filled gazes. He murmured almost hypnotically as he gradually withdrew his hand.
"That phrase is absolutely off-limits... Xing'er, be good and listen to your brother-in-law. That phrase can't be said; once it's out there... it can never be taken back."
