"Alright, we can go now."
After smashing the zombie's head, Chu Donglin no longer glanced at the disgusting red and white mess, smiling at Liu Xiner.
He stepped onto his motorcycle and extended his right hand toward Liu Xiner. "It's been a while since you rode with me, hasn't it? Want to hop on?"
The girl blushed and glanced shyly at Li Yi.
Li Yi cleared his throat. "I'll head back to the district to inform Big Sister."
With that, the third wheel decisively took off, quickly disappearing into the darkness ahead on the street.
Once they were alone, Liu Xiner finally sat behind Chu Donglin, her face still flushed as she gently wrapped her arms around his waist.
At the same time, she leaned her face against his back, feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat.
"Brother-in-law..."
"Yes?"
"Can I stop calling you brother-in-law from now on?"
"Sure, you shouldn't have to call me that anyway," Chu Donglin chuckled. "I don't have any ties with your sister anymore. It feels a bit strange if you keep calling me that."
Silently, two energy crystals floated out from the bodies of the zombies beside the motorcycle and landed in Chu Donglin's pocket.
The surroundings were pitch black, and no one could see anything, not even the girl who was tightly pressed against Chu Donglin's body, unaware of his movements.
At that moment, even if the girl had noticed, she likely wouldn't have had the heart to ponder what it meant.
She wrapped her arms around Chu Donglin from behind, her entire body gently leaning against him. After a long silence, just as he started the motorcycle and prepared to leave, she suddenly spoke up.
"Brother-in-law..."
"Mm?"
"I... I think I'll just keep calling you brother-in-law from now on."
Chu Donglin paused for a moment, a bit puzzled. "Why?"
"I've called you brother-in-law for so many years. Suddenly asking me to change how I address you... I'm just not used to it."
"Haha... You silly girl, you're the one who should change how you address me. Now you don't want to change it? I've given in to everything; do you expect me to play the role of a wooden man?"
Chu Donglin shook his head and chuckled softly. "Call me whatever you want; I don't mind... Just don't know if your sister's boyfriend would mind."
"She doesn't have a boyfriend..."
Liu Xiner suddenly tightened her embrace around Chu Donglin and whispered, "You know she has always only liked you..."
Chu Donglin fell silent.
The street, once filled with the joy of a long-awaited reunion, had turned awkward due to the silence that lingered between them.
After a long while, Chu Donglin finally lifted his head, gazing at the bright moonlight above. He smiled lightly and said, "In the end, she and I are fated to be apart. Since we've missed our chance, there's no need to force it."
Liu Xiner watched Chu Donglin's profile from behind, feeling a sense of loss. "Brother-in-law, are you... still holding a grudge against my father?"
"A grudge? Not really. It's just that some things, once lost, must be reclaimed by one's own hands."
As if recalling past experiences, Chu Donglin smiled again, but his gaze was calm and devoid of any hatred.
"Living in this world means that when one makes mistakes, they must ultimately pay the price. If someone who has done wrong escapes punishment due to pleas or other reasons, it is unfair to everyone."
His words, delivered with a smile, seemed less about harboring resentment and more about emphasizing a principle he believed in.
Liu Xiner understood that Chu Donglin had indeed moved past any resentment towards her father, Liushan Shu. Yet that calm acceptance only intensified her fear.
She couldn't help but hold on tighter, afraid that if she let go, Chu Donglin would leave and never return.
"Brother-in-law..."
"Yes?"
"Can I ask you for a favor?"
"Do you want to plead for your father?"
"I... I want to ask you to help me find him."
"Why?"
"Because he is my father, and I am very worried about him. Ever since the disaster began, I haven't heard from him for almost two months. I'm afraid he... I'm afraid he..."
"Afraid he has become a Zombie? Or that a Zombie has eaten him?"
Liu Xiner lowered her head sadly.
Chu Donglin sighed helplessly. "Xing'er, you know about the issues between your father and me, right? You clearly know about our past, yet you still ask me to save him... Aren't you putting me in a difficult position?"
"But... but I really have no other options. In this world, you are the only one I can rely on now. If you won't help me, then Xing'er will truly be at a dead end."
"Foolish Girl, no matter what you want me to do, as long as I can manage it, I certainly won't refuse you... But are you sure you really want me to help you find your father? My grudge with him runs deep; aren't you afraid that when I find him, I'll just kill him?"
"I... I believe my brother-in-law wouldn't do that."
The girl said with a hint of uncertainty, "Brother-in-law, if you find my dad, you definitely won't hurt him. You wouldn't do something like taking advantage of the situation."
"Hah... Girl, you're quite cunning, knowing to use words to pressure me so that I won't be able to act later?"
Chu Donglin couldn't help but laugh. "But you know what my personality is like; when I'm angry, even the king himself wouldn't be spared, let alone your idiot father who offended me back then."
Liu Xiner tightly hugged Chu Donglin and shook her head desperately. "No way! Brother-in-law wouldn't do that! Brother-in-law definitely wouldn't! Xing'er knows brother-in-law would never do such a thing!"
The constant murmuring was less about emphasizing facts and more about self-hypnosis.
Chu Donglin shook his head with a smile. "Why are you holding onto the girl so tightly? I was just planning to use my charm. Let me tell you, that trick won't work on me."
Liu Xiner's eyes lit up, and she quickly exclaimed, "Brother-in-law, as long as you help me find my father and promise not to harm him, will you marry me?"
"No."
Turning around, he playfully tapped the girl on the forehead, pushing Liu Xiner's pretty face away. Chu Donglin chuckled in disbelief.
"Your dad went through so much trouble—schemes, threats, and traps—to finally get me away from his eldest daughter. And now, just when he thinks he's rid of me, he finds out his daughter is once again in my company... Aren't you afraid he'll be driven to his grave by anger?"
Liu Xiner covered her red forehead and frowned unhappily. "Then what will it take for you to let him go?"
"We'll talk about this later. For now, let's check out the Survivor camp where you're staying and see what kind of people you've been hanging out with."
With that, Chu Donglin revved up the motorcycle and sped off with Liu Xiner toward the nearby camp entrance.
