Li Yi's actions startled Liu Xiner, and she instinctively ran in front of him, spreading her arms as if to shield him from the bullets.
"Uncle Li, don't shoot!"
The girl's movement left Li Yi momentarily stunned. He instinctively lowered his gun and looked at the girl before him with curiosity and confusion. "What are you doing?"
Recalling their earlier conversation, Li Yi suddenly understood something.
"Could this fellow be your..."
Liu Xiner's face flushed, and she awkwardly averted her gaze. "If... if nothing unexpected happens, then it should be him..."
Li Yi immediately furrowed his brows. "But even if he is someone you know, I can't let him bring danger to the camp. It's late at night, and Mutated Zombies are roaming around. That fellow is riding a motorcycle through the streets; there’s definitely a horde of Mutated Zombies following him... Do you want him to ruin everything for us?"
Liu Xiner's complexion paled slightly, clearly realizing the gravity of the situation Li Yi described.
She glanced at Li Yi in front of her and then at the area behind him where hundreds of people lived. She looked back at the dark street behind her and the approaching roar of the motorcycle. The girl's eyes were filled with struggle.
After three seconds, she suddenly made a decision.
With gritted teeth, Liu Xiner pushed open the gate of the area and dashed out toward the dark end of the street.
"I'm going to get him! If there really are Zombies behind him, I won't let him lead them here!"
Although for safety's sake, this long street in front of the gate had been cleared by Ban Qingya and others, Zombies were known to wander around. Therefore, in the darkness of night, a few Zombies were aimlessly roaming the street.
While there weren't many of them, it was still extremely dangerous for a frail girl to face them alone.
Li Yi's expression darkened at that moment.
"This foolish girl!"
He tossed the cigarette butt heavily to the ground and rushed into the duty room to grab the machete before chasing after her.
When fighting these mindless Ordinary Zombies up close, a sharp machete was all that was needed; there was no need to resort to firearms.
However, he had to lock the main door before going out. If a Mutated Zombie slipped in while the sentinels were away, he would be held responsible, no matter the consequences.
But this delay significantly slowed him down.
By the time he finally locked the heavy iron gate and ran after Liu Xiner, the girl had already dashed several hundred meters away and was facing off against a roaring Zombie.
Sensing the scent of living flesh and blood, the previously wandering Zombie suddenly fell into a state of Madness.
It extended its claws, moving sluggishly toward Liu Xiner.
Flies buzzed around its decayed half-face, and a foul stench emanated from its clothes, which were stained with congealed blood.
Its mouth gaped wide open; although its teeth were not sharp, the terrifying biting force of a Zombie could crush human bones.
At that moment, the Zombie lunged forward with a roar, its Evil Spirit-like presence enough to make all the girls scream in terror.
Yet Liu Xiner raised her baseball bat without hesitation, her face showing no signs of panic.
As she came face to face with the Zombie, she swung the bat down hard onto its head.
Bang—
A muffled sound echoed as dark red blood splattered everywhere.
The staggering Zombie was knocked down to the ground, writhing and struggling.
Liu Xiner did not pursue; she lightly jumped over the body of the Zombie and continued running toward the street corner.
Several more Zombies that rushed over were met with a similar fate, as Liu Xiner brought her metal bat down heavily, knocking them to the ground where they struggled but failed to rise.
These Ordinary Zombies, despite their immense strength, moved slowly. In one-on-one combat, as long as one remained calm and composed, even a girl with little strength could easily take them down with a weapon.
Behind her, Li Yi followed closely, wielding a Machete to deliver several finishing blows to the struggling Zombies on the ground, completely extinguishing any chance of survival for these unfortunate creatures.
He raised his head and admired the agile figure of the girl running ahead. Despite knowing that most survivors in this apocalyptic world were not weak or simple-minded, it was still surprising to see a delicate girl accomplish such feats.
When he caught up to her, Liu Xiner was bent over with her hands on her knees, gasping for breath at the end of the dark street.
After all, she was a girl; running this distance had nearly exhausted all her energy.
However, at this point, she no longer needed to run forward.
She and Li Yi stood at the street corner, gazing into the distance at the other end where a bright white Light Spot was rapidly approaching.
It was the headlight of a motorcycle, accompanied by its distinctive roaring sound. The motorcycle sped through the city streets, shattering the tranquility of the night.
In the darkness on both sides of the street, it was hard to tell how many Mutated Zombies were lurking, restless and ready to pounce.
"This fellow... truly a madman..."
Having witnessed such Madness firsthand, Li Yi couldn't help but shake his head. "Your beloved really is... sigh..."
He glanced at Liu Xiner, feeling somewhat speechless. "How has this fellow managed to survive with such a reckless style? Riding a motorcycle around the city like that—it's unbelievable."
In the shadows along the long street, Li Yi sensed that some hidden figures were growing increasingly agitated.
Clearly, those Mutated Zombies hiding in the dark were stirring.
"Let's back off a bit," Li Yi suggested, patting Liu Xiner on the shoulder. "This fellow definitely has a lot of Mutated Zombies following him. I don't know why he hasn't been attacked after running for so long, but once he stops, it could get dangerous... Let's move away from here."
Liu Xiner hesitated for a moment but ultimately shook her head in refusal. "I trust him; he's never been reckless or arrogant. If he dares to do this, it means he isn't afraid of those Mutated Zombies... Uncle Li, you should hide for now. I'll call you out when it's safe."
Li Yi rolled his eyes. "Girls really can be foolish at home; does love turn a woman's IQ into negative numbers?"
Without further ado, he grabbed Liu Xiner's arm, intending to drag this clearly smitten girl away.
Liu Xiner was dazed, but he didn't want to watch her walk into danger; otherwise, he would feel guilty.
However, the voice that echoed in the darkness froze Li Yi's movements.
"Li Yi, have you learned to abduct girls in such a short time?"
The words carried a hint of teasing, something that only those close to each other would dare to express.
Li Yi was momentarily stunned, instinctively looking in the direction of the voice, his expression one of disbelief.
"Chu... Chu Zong?!"
In the next second, a blinding white motorcycle light suddenly enveloped Li Yi and Liu Xiner, causing them to squint against the harsh brightness.
Amidst the howling wind, the motorcycle leaped several meters before landing heavily on the street right in front of Li Yi.
The screeching sound of brakes echoed as the motorcycle transitioned from high speed to a complete stop, leaving a long black tire mark on the pavement.
Amidst the acrid smell of burnt rubber, the man on the motorcycle halted, tilting his head to look at the two standing by the roadside, and smiled. "Long time no see, Xing'er, and you too, Li Yi."
The black scarf fluttered in the night breeze, his dry hair lacking luster, but that lightly smiling face was one both of them recognized all too well...
"Brother-in-law!"
"Chu Zong?!"
