The midday sun shone down on the streets of Pear City, where scattered Zombies wandered through the city of Silence.
This area was near the city center, and before the disaster struck, the population density was not very high. As a result, after the apocalypse began, there weren't many Zombies roaming the streets.
However, "not many" here only referred to the relative emptiness compared to the crowded city center. For the vast majority of Survivors, such a number of Zombies was already terrifying.
Yet these Zombies, which human Survivors feared like tigers, were now retreating from a certain direction around the street corner, afraid of being caught up in the battle occurring there.
Boom—
With a loud crash, a car parked by the roadside was suddenly struck by something, its body twisted and deformed on impact, and the door flew off due to the tremendous force.
The glass windows shattered into pieces as a shadow that had collided with the car door let out a wretched scream, dark red blood splattering from its wounds. Its body was covered in Scales like a Lizard, and even its tail had grown into a long Lizard-like whip, looking exceptionally fierce.
No matter how one looked at it, this was a powerful and terrifying monster capable of rampaging through this post-apocalyptic world.
However, this monstrous figure was not in good shape at all.
Many of its Scales had fallen off, and dark red blood stained its body. Even its long Vicious Whip Tail had been severed at one point, making it appear utterly miserable.
Despite this, its enemies showed no intention of letting it go.
From ahead on the street, a slender figure suddenly charged forward, closing the distance of several dozen meters in an instant. The girl wielded a Machete that glinted with a cold light as she swung it down heavily at the man.
The monstrous man let out an angry roar and spat out a sickly green liquid but easily missed as the figure dodged. He struggled to escape, but suddenly the Cement Ground beneath him cracked open, and several Rebars pierced through his body, pinning him in place.
“Roar!!!”
Caught off guard and nailed to the spot by Rebar, the monster released an enraged howl.
Dark red tainted blood surged from his wounds; his attempts to flee were momentarily halted by the piercing Rebar. Before he could regain his senses, that slender figure had already rushed to stand before him.
The sharp machete swung down violently, sending a deformed head rolling away, accompanied by a spray of fresh blood.
Xue quickly stepped back, distancing herself from the splattering blood to avoid staining her clothes. At the same time, she turned to look at the man behind her, who stood dazedly in place, waiting for his orders.
Chu Donglin casually gestured, and the head that had rolled aside flew back up, crossing a distance of over ten meters before lightly landing in front of him.
It was a twisted and deformed head, its surface covered with strange scales. At first glance, it hardly resembled a human; instead, it looked like an enlarged lizard's head. However, there was no doubt that this fellow was a mutated zombie, specifically a second-stage mutated zombie.
Chu Donglin sliced open the head before him and rummaged inside to extract an energy crystal.
A tempting fragrance wafted through the air, causing Xue, who stood nearby, to become restless. Her blood-red eyes glimmered with a hint of desire as they glanced over.
However, Chu Donglin unconsciously wiped the bloodstains off the crystal and swallowed it whole. Although the two of them had worked together to kill several zombies and he had consumed several energy crystals himself, his level of evolution still lagged far behind that of the girl beside him.
This realization sent a chill down his spine.
He suspected that the girl was nearing the brink of evolution. What would happen if he fed her more energy crystals and she suddenly evolved? Currently, both he and she were second-stage zombies, so he could still manage to control her.
But once she truly evolved into a third-stage zombie, Chu Donglin believed that his mental shackles would be instantly broken by her.
Having managed to control the girl with great difficulty, he certainly did not want to lose that control due to his own foolishness.
As for his interactions with Xue, Chu Donglin had found a balance. He constantly fed her brainwashing messages through their mental link. Although she still showed some agitation upon seeing living humans, she no longer displayed any aggressive impulses towards Shishi at home.
To test his results, Chu Donglin even placed Shishi and Xue together at home while he hid outside to observe. The result was that the girl sat dazedly on the sofa, completely unresponsive as Shishi moved around in front of her.
While second-stage zombies had gained some intelligence, their level of understanding was still exceedingly low. Chu Donglin spent three times as long trying to teach her a single phrase but ultimately had to give up in frustration.
As time passed gradually, the number of mutated zombies in this city began to dwindle, replaced by an increasing number of higher-level zombies.
Though he did not understand why he had yet to see any signs of third-stage zombies in activity, the quantity and variety of second-stage zombies were growing more numerous and increasingly bizarre.
Chu Donglin witnessed a mutated zombie, resembling a gecko, leaping between the high-rise buildings of the city. Its limbs seemed to be coated with a sticky substance, allowing it to cling to smooth walls.
A human survivor camp hidden in the district was ruthlessly slaughtered as it stealthily crawled inside.
Recently, Chu Donglin had seen more and more survivors, many of whom had fled from the City Center District.
They crossed the streets while most White Tier Two Zombies were asleep, desperately trying to escape the city. Their hurried escape suggested that some monstrous creature was pursuing them.
However, this city had completely become a territory of zombies. These humans attempting to traverse the realm of the undead would naturally pay the price.
Even though Second-Stage Zombies were not active, the first-tier zombies were already a significant threat—especially with the terrifying number of the Zombie Sea.
Once any sound was made, the wandering zombies on the streets would eagerly converge, reaching out their hands in search of fresh flesh and blood, ultimately forming a terrifying Zombie Sea that surrounded the survivors.
Typically, if one could not escape before being encircled by zombies, those human survivors were almost certainly doomed.
Having witnessed several such disasters firsthand, Chu Donglin found it increasingly difficult to feel sympathy. The incident with Shishi had dulled his sensitivity towards humanity, and he was still too weak to bear the burden of so many survivors.
If Chu Donglin became stronger, perhaps he would help these survivors out of solidarity for their shared humanity. But for now, he was struggling to survive himself, cautiously fearing any terrifying zombies that might attract his attention, leaving him no mood to care about the lives or deaths of these humans.
While hunting Second-Stage Zombies alongside Xue, he quietly observed this bizarre migration as his strength gradually improved.
However, as time went on, the remaining Mutated Zombies grew stronger. Once all the zombies in nearby blocks that could be killed were dealt with, Chu Donglin's hunting activities hit a stalemate.
The remaining Mutated Zombies were all powerful and terrifying monsters with an array of chaotic abilities that left Chu Donglin perplexed. He and Xue would go out to encircle Second-Stage Zombies, but after more than a week, they had only managed to collect less than two crystals.
This pace left Chu Donglin feeling helpless; he could hardly imagine how Xue alone hunted countless zombies and evolved to her current level… Had her power been constrained since he took control over her, weakening her combat ability?
As he worked on strengthening his coordination with Xue, Chu Donglin silently researched ways to unleash her combat potential further. Eventually, he realized with exasperation that it wasn't Xue who had weakened; it was these zombies that had grown stronger.
As one of the first batches of zombies to evolve when the apocalypse began, Xue had been ahead of nearly all other zombies in her evolutionary path. Although that lead was not substantial, it was enough to suppress someone like Chu Donglin, who was a latecomer in this zombie hierarchy.
After being controlled by Chu Donglin, Snow had not been able to consume any Energy Crystals for a long time. Her evolution had stagnated, and she was gradually being surpassed by other Zombies, making her situation increasingly desperate.
If it weren't for Chu Donglin holding her back, Snow would have almost reached the Third Stage by now.
Under Chu Donglin's cold gaze, the turmoil of human Survivors fleeing and migrating in the city lasted for more than half a month.
During this time, Chu Donglin witnessed several unfortunate Survivors meet their demise, while some lucky ones managed to escape to the outskirts of the city, where human presence was even scarcer.
From the direction these Survivors fled, Chu Donglin noticed a strange phenomenon—there were hardly any roars from Second-Stage Zombies coming from that direction.
It was well-known that at night, the Second-Stage Zombies in the dark city would often roar and challenge each other, sending out signals of provocation to nearby kin.
However, the direction from which those Survivors fled had become the eeriest quiet zone in the entire city, with almost no sounds of Second-Stage Zombies' roars. Instead, in several areas near that district, the howls of Second-Stage Zombies had become much more frequent than before.
It felt as if something was driving these Second-Stage Zombies away from that district, just like it did with humans.
This bizarre phenomenon made Chu Donglin feel uneasy. After killing his sixth Second-Stage Zombie and reuniting with Snow for the third week, he finally made up his mind to investigate that area.
No matter what awaited him there, he had to see it with his own eyes to confirm the situation. Otherwise, with such a strange threat lingering nearby, Chu Donglin could never feel at ease.
