A sudden wave of hunger brought Chu Donglin back to reality. Looking at his pitifully injured body, he couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh.
He had become a thorough Zombie, and yet he was still worried about the future of humanity? Ha... how ridiculous.
Struggling to lift his head, Chu Donglin felt the familiar pangs of hunger in his stomach.
Most of a Zombie's energy was used for transformation and evolution, with only a small portion stored as a source of energy for movement.
When a Zombie was injured, its body would absorb the stored energy to heal its wounds.
However, once that energy was depleted and the wounds remained unhealed, one would end up like Chu Donglin—lying on the ground, feeling utterly miserable from hunger.
Moreover, although the explosive surge of power during his near-death experience had saved Chu Donglin's life, the aftereffects were quite evident.
Now, Chu Donglin felt incredibly weak; even the Energy Crystal in his head seemed to be withering, sending occasional sharp pains through him.
Feeling his frail body, Chu Donglin realized he needed to store some Energy Crystals at Home. This way, if he were to get seriously injured again in the future, he could replenish his energy in time and avoid finding himself in such a dire situation again.
The Second-Stage Zombie he encountered earlier had been terrifying. In its presence, Chu Donglin had no ability to fight back at all.
Moreover, after injuring him, it had even attempted to control him, which startled Chu Donglin.
Had Second-Stage Zombies begun to develop intelligence? Did they understand how to gather followers for their own use?
Its method of control was different from how Chu Donglin manipulated Ordinary Zombies; it condensed its Mental Power into a seed and implanted it into Chu Donglin's brain, trying to completely dominate him through this means.
This method was far superior to the puppet-like control that Chu Donglin had used before. If it weren't for the Mental Seed stimulating the Zombie's survival instinct, and the unexpected power that Chu Donglin had unleashed, he would have already become a subordinate of that Second-Stage Zombie.
However, this ordeal was not without its gains for Chu Donglin. The techniques of the Second-Stage Zombie provided him with a new inspiration.
He realized that this method of planting a Mental Seed was much more sophisticated than his own, as once the Mental Seed was sown, the Zombie would obey without question, eliminating the need for constant use of Mental Power to maintain the connection.
In contrast, his previous method of controlling Zombies was quite rudimentary; once he loosened his grip, the Zombie would break free from his control.
Chu Donglin planned to try out this technique soon, hoping to create a powerful army of Zombies.
But before that, he needed to heal his injuries.
He was currently battered and bruised, feeling weaker than when he first became a Zombie. There was no fresh meat at home to fill his stomach and replenish his energy... Wait? Fresh meat?
Chu Donglin caught a whiff of an enticing aroma. He twitched his nose and looked up with some excitement.
Then he saw the girl sleeping on the sofa.
Under the cool moonlight, her profile was flawless like white jade, and her slightly furrowed brow seemed to express concern for someone's safety.
She had chosen not to sleep in the comfortable big bed but stayed in the living room, positioning herself within Chu Donglin's line of sight, silently guarding him.
As Chu Donglin watched, a cool breeze swept through, causing the sleeping girl to shiver slightly. She curled up deeper into the sofa, seeking more warmth.
After taking one last glance at her, Chu Donglin swallowed hard and turned his head, struggling to crawl toward the balcony.
Even if he were a beastly pervert, he would never eat a girl. So even though the delicious body of the girl, who lay defenseless before him, was incredibly tempting to the starving Zombie, he had no intention of doing anything.
In the corner of the room, a group of chickens that had been clucking incessantly had now fallen silent.
Although their meat did not smell as enticing as the girl's, it still held a certain appeal for the famished Chu Donglin.
"Seriously... do you have to mess with me like this?"
Chu Donglin lay on the floor, struggling to resist the urge to crawl over and devour those chickens.
Even if he finished all that chicken meat, it wouldn't be much use; he would only lose out on future eggs and more chicken meat. Chu Donglin decided it was better to absorb the moonlight and slowly recover.
He crawled onto the balcony and let himself bask in the moonlight. Here, he could hear the countless roars of Zombies echoing throughout the city.
Clearly, those Zombies also sensed the benefits of moonlight and emerged from their hiding places. Among their roars, Chu Donglin could distinguish many that were clearly from High-Level Zombies.
The intensity of those roars startled Chu Donglin.
From the information conveyed through those sounds, it was evident that at least three Second-Stage Zombies were wandering nearby. But why hadn't he seen any during the day?
Recalling the earlier scene from daylight, he began to understand something.
That Second-Stage Zombie, the one that had turned after dying in the snow, glared fiercely at Chu Donglin, furious at his escape.
Yet no matter how angry she was, she refused to chase after him, only able to watch helplessly as Chu Donglin limped away on his motorcycle... Clearly, these Second-Stage Zombies were afraid of sunlight.
During the day, Bai Chu and Dongling rarely saw Second Stage Zombies, but once the sun set, these fellows would emerge to roam about.
This nocturnal behavior reminded Chu Donglin of a creature known as a vampire. However, he understood that Zombies were different from vampires.
The reason Second Stage Zombies could not walk in sunlight must be due to some other factor. After all, he had witnessed a Second Stage White Wolf basking in the morning sun, swaggering down the street with confidence.
Although there was a reason preventing Second Stage Zombies from walking in sunlight, there should be a way to circumvent it.
As long as he could find that method, it was likely that Second Stage Zombies could walk under the sun.
As for what that method might be, Chu Donglin would have to wait until he evolved to Second Stage before he could explore it further. After all, his current understanding of Second Stage Zombies was based solely on speculation.
Moreover, Second Stage Zombies felt too distant for Chu Donglin. He had only recently transformed into a Zombie; achieving such rapid evolution in such a short time was astonishing.
Compared to those First Generation Zombies who had turned during the outbreak of the apocalypse, Chu Donglin, as a newly infected Zombie from later on, was still quite young.
Thus, lying on the cold floor of the balcony under the moonlight, lost in thought and tossing and turning for a long time, Chu Donglin eventually dozed off.
