His head throbbed painfully. 0

Chu Donglin leaned weakly against the wall in the corner, rubbing his temples in agony. 0

It was unbearable. 0

The wound on his right shoulder throbbed faintly; a large chunk of flesh had been bitten away by a Zombie, and the blood that oozed from it stained his shirt a shocking red. 0

However, compared to a few hours ago, the pain from the wound had diminished significantly, to the point where he could hardly feel it unless he focused on it. 0

Chu Donglin knew this was because his body's functions were gradually deteriorating. 0

Under the transformation of the Zombie Virus, the human part of him was slowly fading away. Meanwhile, the Zombie part was being overtaken by Madness, which would ultimately turn him into a monster just like those Zombies wandering the streets outside. 0

"I... I don't want to die..." 0

Chu Donglin gasped for breath, his dark pupils gradually turning gray. 0

The color of Silence was nearly filling his eyes, and his once agile body felt as heavy as lead. 0

He clenched everything he could grasp around him in desperation, seeking some form of support, but it was all in vain. A plastic water bottle exploded in his hand, soaking him with its contents. 0

If he had crushed a water bottle like that under normal circumstances, he might have felt a sense of pride in his strength. 0

But now, all he felt was overwhelming despair and sorrow because he knew this meant he was closer to death. 0

With the virus's transformation, his body grew heavier, his movements slower, and his vision blurrier. 0

He leaned against the corner by the street, not far away from a group of indistinct shadows wandering about. Those were Zombies searching for food—these victims of the virus had taken over the territory of the living and brazenly roamed within human cities. 0

And the original inhabitants of this city, those pitiful Survivors, could only struggle to evade the claws of the Zombies, hiding in the shadows and daring not to make a sound. 0

In the year 5 AD, an unknown biological crisis erupted globally, transforming at least seventy percent of humanity into Zombies. 0

There were no warnings, no premonitions, no clues—like a cruel joke played by God, the entire human society was plunged into chaos in an instant. 0

The first batch of transformed Zombies reached out with their claws towards their friends and family, launching sudden attacks that killed many humans without warning. 0

Moreover, those bitten would rise again after death, joining the ranks of the Zombies and extending their claws towards the living. 0

The shadow of Zombies quickly enveloped the entire human world. Amidst this chaotic situation, Chu Donglin and a group of Survivors fled to a relatively safe house. 0

Initially, Chu Donglin thought they had escaped the dangers posed by the Zombies; however, it was merely the beginning of their misfortune. 0

Among the Survivors were two armed fugitives. 0

After assessing the situation outside, they quickly took control of all the Survivors, using their guns to intimidate everyone into surrendering their valuables and food. 0

Outside lay an endless horde of Zombies, while the government that should have maintained order was unresponsive. 0

Watching as the city was overrun by wandering Zombies, even the most oblivious person could tell that something terrible had happened to the world. 0

In such a horrifying apocalypse, the importance of food and valuable items was evident to anyone. 0

Faced with the brutality of the two fugitives, the group felt outraged but dared not speak up. Even when the Survivors obediently handed over their food and valuables, the two Thugs did not spare them. 0

To set an example or perhaps just to flaunt their power and establish authority—or maybe to eliminate any potential threats within their ranks—the two fugitives shot three adult men dead on the spot. 0

Chu Donglin was merely slow in handing over his backpack when one of the Thugs broke his arm and tossed him into a pile of Zombies, nearly leading to his dismemberment. 0

Although Chu Donglin fought with all his might to escape from the encirclement of Zombies, he was bitten on his right shoulder. 0

Based on the scenes he had witnessed during his days of fleeing, he knew he was on the verge of becoming a Zombie. 0

It was an irreversible process, a terrifying fate that was difficult to change, causing Chu Donglin's heart to be tormented by the gnawing pain of Madness. 0

"I don't want to die... I haven't taken my revenge yet! I haven't killed those two bastards; I don't want to die..." 0

Chu Donglin screamed in agony, reaching out with his hands as if trying to grasp something, and then he caught hold of a leg. 0

The passing Zombie looked down at Chu Donglin for a moment, emitting strange gurgling sounds from its throat. 0

Then the Zombie ignored Chu Donglin, breaking free from his grip and continuing to wander away unsteadily. 0

Chu Donglin's face was filled with despair. 0

At this point, had even the Zombie begun to see him as one of its kind? 0

Though he could not see his own reflection, Chu Donglin was well aware that he must look pale, with dry hair and eyes that were a ghastly shade of Silence—like an Evil Spirit crawling out of hell. 0

"I don't want this... I don't want this... I don't want to die... Help me... someone help me... I don't want to become a Zombie..." 0

Chu Donglin tilted his head back in pain. Even though his vision was blurred, he could vaguely see a dim light in the distance. 0

Today was not sunny; the gloomy sky mirrored Chu Donglin's heart, filled with despairing darkness. 0

His cries for help went unanswered, but his keen hearing picked up the sound of hurried footsteps approaching. 0

At the same time, an enticing aroma wafted through the air. Chu Donglin's nose twitched; he was hungry. 0

He raised his head in confusion. His blurred vision couldn’t make out what was happening on the street, but he could hear a cacophony of voices. 0

"Run! Don't let them surround you!" 0

"Left, left! There's a way on the left!" 0

"Run that way! Hurry! Hurry!" 0

These were the cries of a few surviving humans fleeing from the encirclement of Zombies. Compared to the slow-moving Zombies, these humans were much more agile. 0

As long as they weren't surrounded by the Zombies, the more nimble humans had no life-threatening danger. 0

However, in this city already filled with Zombies, achieving that was incredibly difficult. Soon, screams echoed from nearby, and the resistance of those humans crumbled like dust before the overwhelming power of the Zombies. 0

A sweet, enticing scent of blood wafted through the air, and Chu Donglin's stomach growled. He felt an unbearable hunger. The Zombies' craving for fresh meat nearly shattered his already fragile mental defenses. 0

Not far away on the street, the Zombies were feasting in madness, happily sharing the remains of fallen Survivors. Chu Donglin leaned against a wall in an alley, inhaling the aroma that drifted through the air, enduring an indescribable torment. 0

"I... I can't believe I'm developing an appetite for human flesh?" 0

This unfamiliar feeling filled Chu Donglin with terror. "Am I... am I really about to become a Zombie?" 0

The scent of blood grew stronger in the air, and Chu Donglin's hunger intensified. 0

A voice in his mind urged him desperately to join the feasting Zombies; his body instinctively craved human blood and flesh. 0

In agony, Chu Donglin braced himself against the wall and staggered deeper into the alley. "No... I don't want this. I don't want to become a Zombie... I don't want to die... I want revenge... revenge..." 0

The despair of near death and the unwillingness for vengeance gnawed at Chu Donglin's heart like a venomous snake. He felt his steps growing heavier and his consciousness fading. 0

Finally, as he tripped over a step, darkness enveloped him, and he collapsed heavily onto the ground. 0

After a long period of unconsciousness, when Chu Donglin finally woke up, he felt a gnawing hunger in his abdomen, as if his body instinctively urged him to seek out fresh meat to consume. 0

He moved his hand but found that his body felt unusually heavy. What should have been a simple action of getting up drained all his strength. 0

Unsteadily standing by the roadside, he looked at the brightly lit city under the streetlights, a look of confusion crossing his face. 0

Am I... not dead? 0

Then Chu Donglin noticed something strange about this body. 0

His vision had become exceptionally blurry; he could only see clearly within twenty meters. Beyond that distance, everything appeared as if shrouded in frosted glass, just a vague blur. 0

At the same time, his sense of smell had sharpened. 0

He could even detect the metallic scent of dried blood from dozens of meters away. What terrified him the most was that upon smelling this blood, his body responded with a signal of pleasure, akin to how humans might react to the fragrance of flowers—an unsettling enjoyment. 0

Suddenly, a thought struck him. Dragging his heavy body, he desperately ran toward a clothing store not far away. 0

But no matter how hard he tried to move, his steps remained painfully slow, almost indistinguishable from an ordinary person's leisurely stroll. 0

This realization only intensified the ominous feeling growing within him. 0

Yet he still couldn't bring himself to believe it all. He clung to a final hope that he was mistaken, that he was still alive and had not turned into a Zombie... 0

Bang— 0

He shakily pushed open the glass door of the clothing store and stumbled into the dark interior. 0

Through the glow of the streetlights, he could see the chaos inside; it was evident that this place had been rummaged through many times during the apocalypse. 0

He moved with a stiff and sluggish gait, "running" step by step into the store. Guided by the streetlight outside, he found the switch for the store's lights. 0

With a gentle press, blinding white light instantly illuminated the dark shop. 0

Then, Chu Donglin's body froze. 0

Just a few meters in front of him stood a zombie with a decaying face, staring blankly at him. 0

At that moment, this disgusting zombie seemed curiously captivated by the sudden burst of light, letting out a strange, low growl from its throat. 0

However, the zombie did not attack him. Even though Chu Donglin was within pouncing distance, it remained still, as if it did not see him as a potential meal but rather as one of its own kind. 0

No... this can't be true... 0

Chu Donglin desperately turned his head to look at the large mirror in the clothing store, and there he saw his current reflection. 0

His dry hair was colorless and withered, his pale skin resembling that of a fish belly turned white, devoid of any blood. The once vibrant black eyes now appeared an eerie gray, lacking any spark of life. 0

What appeared in the mirror was nothing less than a pure zombie. 0

Chu Donglin let out a painful scream, startling the nearby zombie. 0

He swung his fist and shattered the mirror before him. The broken glass pierced into his hand; there was no unbearable pain, and the blood that flowed was not fresh dark red but a nauseating dark crimson. 0

No matter how unwilling he was to accept the truth, Chu Donglin knew he had truly become a zombie. 0

He desperately tried to clench his fist but found that his fingers were so weak that even this simple action was impossible. He opened his mouth to roar, but all that escaped his vocal cords was a low, strange growl. 0

Unable to speak, unable to lift anything, aside from the unusually powerful strength he had gained, Chu Donglin felt utterly useless. 0

Is this what it means to be a Zombie? 0

Staring blankly at his hands, Chu Donglin was astonished to discover that the strength in his previously injured arm had returned without him realizing it. 0

Although the wound still existed, the pain had subsided, allowing Chu Donglin to use his arm once more. 0

However, this did not bring him any joy; his heart was consumed by anguish, and he felt on the verge of collapse from the overwhelming despair. 0

At that moment, a familiar ringtone suddenly echoed from his pocket. Chu Donglin froze for a moment before quickly reaching for his phone. 0

Due to his fingers feeling unusually weak, this simple action became surprisingly difficult. After much effort, he finally retrieved the phone from his pocket. Upon seeing the unfamiliar number on the screen, he was taken aback. 0

Instinctively, he pressed the answer button, and joyful voices from the other end filled his ears. 0

“It’s connected! Great! It’s connected!” 0

Immediately after, Mother Chu urged Father Chu to speak. Although Father Chu tried hard to remain calm, the excitement in his voice was unmistakable. 0

Their voices, filled with emotion and eagerness, resonated in the dimly lit store, bringing a glimmer of warmth to a world surrounded by Zombies. 0

“Chu Donglin, where are you now? Are you safe? Do you have enough food? Are you hiding alone or with other Survivors? Are there many Zombies nearby? Is your environment safe? Is there a military presence establishing shelters for Survivors? Are you eating well?” 0

Even Father Chu, who was usually composed, couldn’t help but bombard his son with questions after being out of contact for a week. 0

Listening to the familiar voices of his parents and feeling their concerned worries made Chu Donglin's eyes well up with tears. 0

He wiped away his tears while nodding repeatedly, forgetting that his parents on the other end couldn’t see his gestures. 0

The sound of Chu Donglin's sobbing was heard by both Chu Father and Mother Chu. How could they mistake the familiar voice of their son? The two elderly parents, who had been worried for a week, finally breathed a sigh of relief. 0

"That's great, Chu Donglin! Now listen to me. Your mother and I are in a Shelter established by the military, so you don't have to fear the threat of Zombies for now. There should be military forces setting up Shelters near your city as well. Look for an opportunity to escape and seek their protection. Remember, you must stay alert and avoid being bitten by those Zombies. If you get bitten, you'll quickly become infected with the virus and turn into a flesh-eating Zombie! This is very important; you must remember it!" 0

"By the way, do you have..." 0

Chu Father's instructions were abruptly cut off. 0

The store fell silent once again as Chu Donglin stared blankly at his phone's black screen, panic etched on his face. 0

"Ugh... ugh..." 0

He waved his hands but could only emit futile and anxious cries. The phone hadn't been charged for over a week, and its power was nearly depleted. 0

After all, the communication network in Wangcheng, where Chu Father and Mother Chu lived, had been completely cut off from the start. Many calls made by Chu Donglin had vanished into thin air, and in despair, he eventually gave up on the phone altogether. 0

If it weren't for Chu Father suddenly calling back today, Chu Donglin might have almost forgotten that he even had a phone with him. 0

Looking at the phone that had shut down due to low battery, Chu Donglin frantically scanned his surroundings, searching for a place to charge it. 0

However, while there were Sockets in the clothing store, he couldn't find a single Data Cable to charge his phone. 0

Like a headless fly, Chu Donglin stumbled around until he suddenly remembered that there was a store selling Mobile Accessories on Folk Street, where he was sure to find a Data Cable. Carefully placing his phone back into his pocket, he rushed out of the clothing store and wobbled towards the mobile shop he recalled. 0
