There is a fishing village on the island, but the whole village is surrounded by a ten-meter-high wall, more like a prison.
Hiroji Aoki sat on the sofa, drinking and watching TV. The news reported that someone had climbed the wall without permission and ran out to see the sea, only to be bitten to death by a merman monster.
Hiroji Aoki squashed the beer can in his hand as he looked out the window at the towering wall. Growing up in this village, he had never seen the world beyond the wall. The village elders told him that outside the wall, there were mermaids with human heads and fish tails, skilled at deceiving people on the sea and then devouring them. None of the villagers who ventured out ever returned, and the number of missing fishermen had exceeded a hundred over the years.
Hiroji Aoki is timid by nature and unquestioningly believes in the things passed down by the older generation. Although he is very eager to see what the sea is like, the rumors of mermaids always make him panic, and he dare not even approach the wall.
But five years ago, his brother Shinichi Aoki secretly dug a tunnel outside the wall and never came back. Many people in the village say that Shinichi must have died, as those mermaids can smell the scent of humans, and he couldn't have escaped the hunt of the mermaids.
Listening to the news on TV, Hiroji Aoki frowned, recalling that summer night five years ago.

Under the starry sky, Hiroji Aoki sat shoulder to shoulder with his brother Shinichi Aoki on the doorstep, counting the stars and looking towards the distant wall.
"I heard that the sea is very beautiful, it is azure blue, very very vast, the sea water is very clear, and there is a very large stretch of beach, where you can dig holes to make houses, standing there the sand will cover our feet, delicate and cool, very fun." said Hiroji Aoki.
"Who told you that?" Shinichi Aoki laughed.

Shinichi's eyes dimmed, he didn't say anything, just forced out a smile.
Hiroshi suddenly realized that he had misspoken. When they were younger, their family was very poor, and their father could only afford to send one child to school. Shinichi didn't hesitate to give up the opportunity for Hiroshi.
In truth, Hiroshi also knew that his brother Shinichi was even more eager to go to school and would often sneak to the school windows to listen to the teachers.
Moreover, since childhood, Shinichi often left meat and eggs for Hiroshi, causing himself to suffer from malnutrition, with a very thin and weak body, a waxen complexion, and a body full of bones when he took off his clothes.
Recalling those past experiences, Hiroshi turned to look at Shinichi, feeling both grateful and somewhat guilty in his heart.
"Your dad is in bad shape! Go call the doctor quickly!" At that moment, the mother, Takahashi Miki, suddenly shouted anxiously in the house.
Hiroshi and Shinichi quickly got up and rushed back into the house. They saw their father, Okawa, lying on the bed, looking like a skeleton, with a pale face, no color in his cheeks, and gasping for breath.
Takahashi Miki Hurriedly brought hot water and said urgently, "He's sick again! Quickly go call the doctor!"
Shinichi patted Hiroshi and asked him to take care of their father together, then turned and rushed out of the house, running madly towards the Barefoot doctor's home.
Twenty minutes later, Shinichi hurriedly brought the doctor back. He was sweating all over and out of breath, urging the doctor to treat his father quickly.
The doctor put down his medical kit and frowned when he saw Dad on the sickbed. He examined Dad's eyes and shook his head, saying the chances of recovery were slim.
Shinichi Upon hearing this, he hurriedly knelt down and pleaded with the doctor, "Please, save my father, whatever the conditions may be!"
The doctor sighed, "There is a fish in the sea that might be able to cure this illness..."

Sitting on the sofa, Hiroji Aoki collected his thoughts and turned back to continue watching the news report. It showed a half-eaten corpse, and the reporter said that this was the third person to die this month. The other two were missing after sneaking outside the wall. The reporter urged everyone not to take any more risks by going out.
Hiroji Aoki closed his eyes, unable to imagine the pain Shinichi must have felt as he ran out for his father and was torn apart by mermaids. Thinking about this, his hands trembled slightly as he clenched his teeth tightly.
After his father passed away, his mother also died of cancer not long after. Hiroji Aoki became an orphan. He has been researching deep-sea bombs for all these years, wanting to kill those mermaids and avenge Shinichi.
His belief in surviving is also just for revenge. He feels that as long as those mermaids die, the wall outside the village can be removed.
Hiroji Aoki took a deep breath, put on his coat, and headed to Mr. Sato's house. Before leaving the outer wall, he decided to bid a final farewell to his mentor.
At over sixty years old, Mr. Sato understood Hiroji Aoki's personality and what he had been researching over the years. When Hiroji Aoki pushed open the door, Mr. Sato understood what it meant.
"Teacher, this time I came to see you on purpose."
Mr. Sato nodded slightly. He knew Hiroshi was very stubborn. He sighed and said, "If you insist on doing this, I won't stop you. But there are some things I want to give you, hoping you can come back safely."
After speaking, Mr. Sato turned and entered the room, taking out a set of protective clothing and a revolver.
"You should put on this clothing, although I'm not sure if it will be effective. Take the revolver as well, it's loaded with special bullets that are much more powerful than regular firearms."
Hiroshi looked at the black protective suit and asked, "What is this for?"
Mr. Sato replied, "It's for radiation protection. In fact, we rarely talk about history with your generation because our history has made too many mistakes, and we are ashamed to bring them to light."
He paused and continued, "Because of a disaster, the radiation levels in the sea far exceeded the standard, and as a result, these mermaids appeared in the sea. They rushed into the village, attacking people everywhere. It wasn't until a big fire scared them away that our village built a wall to defend against their attacks."
"Are these mermaids mutated?"
