With a loud "Aow," it leaped up, soaring over three meters high, and lunged directly at me. Instinctively, I crouched down and rolled away, narrowly escaping the shards of broken glass. "Damn it, what bad luck!" I cursed as I felt several cuts on my body, blood oozing from them.
"Hold on for a bit; let me find the talisman to deal with this!" Big Mouth Lee quickly dodged to the side and began rummaging through his belongings in search of his Celestial Five Thunder Talisman. Due to recent price hikes, he had sold most of them off, leaving only a few hidden away.
At that moment, my mouth was full of blood, and I couldn't use my blood to subdue it anymore; I looked quite pathetic!
The blood from the tip of my tongue was most potent when taken in the first three sips each day. After that, each subsequent spray diluted its purity. Therefore, after I sprayed my third mouthful of blood, the Ghost Infant seemed less intimidated!
The Ghost Infant sneered, "I've already passed beyond; today none of you will escape!"
The Ghost Infant was a rather unique creature; it was formed from a dead infant at the Corpse Raising Ground. It was a hybrid monster, part ghost and part zombie. It could inflict damage on both ethereal and physical entities. Although it was incredibly fierce, being an Evil Spirit meant that it would avoid those with strong Daoist practices or powerful Yang energy.
My own energy was extremely Yin, and as someone engaged in fortune-telling and divination, Big Mouth Lee's energy wasn't exactly favorable!
"Die, you little doll! Let me show you the power of the Celestial Five Thunder Talisman!" Big Mouth Lee pulled out several talismans and traced a Three Pure Formula in the air before pointing at one of them. The talisman flew up with a rustling sound.
Sure enough, the talisman seemed to know its way and charged straight at the Ghost Infant, sticking to it like rubber glue. As the thunder talisman made contact, a clap of thunder echoed through the air. The talisman emitted a sizzling electric sound, forming a ghostly blue web of electricity that tightly bound the Ghost Infant.
The talisman was infused with the Daoist's spiritual awareness; when encountering ghosts or monsters, it could harness natural powers. The thunder talisman drew upon the might of lightning to subdue demons. Essentially, a talisman served as an energy conduit rather than possessing immense energy itself.
The Ghost Infant let out a furious roar as it broke free from the electric web as if it were just an ordinary fishing net. A puff of green smoke erupted as it writhed in pain on the ground; clearly, the talismans were effective.
Another talisman was thrown.
Then another.
The Ghost Infant was hit twice by the talismans; although it managed to escape both times, every part of its body was scorched. Green smoke billowed up as it howled in agony, which only seemed to infuriate it further! Its left eyebrow stood upright while its right brow furrowed downwards; its cheeks puffed up with each breath, growing larger with every pulse.
"Damn it, it's going to breathe fire!"
I shouted for Big Mouth Lee to watch out for flames. Time was running short; I ducked behind a table for cover. Big Mouth Lee appeared to be getting addicted to throwing talismans. He pulled out another one and hurled it at the Ghost Infant.
“Damn it, I won't let you off! This Five Thunder Technique is the true transmission of the Celestial Gate of the Divine Dawn Talisman! Let's see if this can take you down!” Big Mouth Lee saw that the Ghost Infant had already hidden to the side and threw five more Six Paths thunder talismans, filling the room with flashes of lightning!
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
A burst of flames spewed forth, black smoke swirling around, with tongues of fire reaching thirty centimeters long!
At just the right moment, a five thunder talisman was activated. The talisman collided with the flames, resulting in a violent explosion that sounded like thunder, shaking the entire house.
The Ghost Infant staggered back three or four steps, leaning against the door. Although it could spit fire, it still needed to gather Eerie Energy. If there wasn't enough Eerie Energy, the flames it unleashed would be extremely weak.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
More than ten talismans flew out again, causing the Ghost Infant to roll on the ground in pain. As soon as a talisman touched it, flames ignited, turning it to ashes!
Big Mouth Lee was getting into it but suddenly reached into his bag and his expression changed drastically!
“Damn! I'm out of talismans!”
“Aren't you a disciple of the Celestial Sect? Hurry up and draw some talismans!”
“Sigh! Drawing talismans consumes a lot of Mysterious Power. Even if I start now, it would be too late!”
A Talisman is the essence of a Taoist's spirit. It may look like random scribbles, but in reality, it involves channeling Mysterious Power from the fingertips to the pen tip, infusing it into Cinnabar, and writing each stroke with one's consciousness. Therefore, each talisman is extremely precious and cannot be compared to mere calligraphy. An ordinary Daoist can only draw three or four a day at most. A Master Level practitioner can manage only about ten talismans daily!
“Ah, what are we going to do now? I don't have enough blood left on my tongue!” I looked at Big Mouth Lee, momentarily stunned. “What can we do now? Is there any way to subdue this Ghost Infant?”
To be honest, I hadn't come here to exorcise ghosts in the first place; I didn't even bring important tools like the Master Copper Seal. Although the 《Mausoleum Secrets》 is a treasure, it's just a book after all!
“Hell if I know!” Big Mouth Lee was clearly panicking as well. This half-baked practitioner was just coasting along without any good ideas and could only stare blankly.
"Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!"
The Ghost Infant laughed wickedly, "Let's see what other tricks you have. No one is getting away tonight!"
Sure enough, the Ghost Infant let out a wild howl, leaping into the air like a monkey, soaring nearly three meters high, almost hitting the ceiling beam. Then it came crashing down, kicking its hind legs and sending me stumbling backward. I fell hard to the ground, my vision darkening, my mind going blank, and everything around me became unclear. I lay there unable to get back up.
Seeing the situation was dire, Big Mouth Lee attempted to flee to the backyard. Just as he took off, the Ghost Infant sprang up from the ground and kicked him squarely in the back. With a yelp of pain, Big Mouth Lee was knocked down too, his face turning purple from the agony, and he couldn’t stand up either.
It was over!
My eyes filled with bitterness, helplessness, and unwillingness. My life had just begun; I didn’t want it to end abruptly! Both Big Mouth Lee and I were engulfed in despair as silence loomed outside, and the rain poured down even harder.
The Ghost Infant lunged at me first, my vision blurring!
Despair!
A flash of white light appeared as a fluffy white creature charged directly at the Ghost Infant. It opened its mouth and bit fiercely at the Ghost Infant's rear end. Without a doubt, it was sent flying by the Ghost Infant's retaliatory strike. The Ghost Infant looked at it in terror and stumbled back several steps until it leaned against the door.
It was Bai Ze, now called Furball.
After being knocked away, Furball pounced again. It was hit once more but kept charging back repeatedly.
"Doggy!"
The Ghost Infant resembled a mischievous child gazing at a beloved toy. There was an impulse to destroy it mixed with a hint of affection in its eyes. Furball hid nearby, panting heavily; it had been injured too! "Giggling! Perhaps I'll spare this dog’s life!" I cursed inwardly, "What a world where even dogs fare better than humans!"
"Ow! Ow! Ow!"
I could read the anger in Furball's soft pink eyes as the surrounding air suddenly thickened with tension. It seemed to be saying, "I won’t let you hurt my master!" I felt an overwhelming gratitude for Furball.
Furball jumped up again, lunging at the Ghost Infant. Panting heavily, it was once more sent flying by the Ghost Infant. Both Big Mouth Lee and I felt ashamed; sometimes, humans really can't compare to dogs! Of course, Big Mouth Lee always thought it was just a dog.
Surrounded by this inexplicable anxiety, I completely lost my mind. Ignoring the blood covering me, I grabbed a beer bottle and charged at the Ghost Infant. The Ghost Infant was caught off guard by my sudden movement and looked momentarily stunned. I smashed the bottle against it with all my might, shattering it and sending glass shards flying everywhere. Big Mouth Lee also jumped up, grabbing the Ghost Infant in a tight embrace, causing it to screech in distress. With a fierce roar, Big Mouth Lee managed to tackle the Ghost Infant to the ground.
"Quick, stab its foot!"
The soles of the feet gather various acupoints, serving as a central hub for vital energy. For this kind of tough corpse monster, only by piercing the foot can we release the Evil Spirit energy and weaken its power.
I took the broken beer bottle and aimed it at the Ghost Infant, stabbing deep into its foot. Black blood gushed out. The Ghost Infant let out a heart-wrenching scream, its ghostly claws frantically tearing at Big Mouth Lee's back. Flesh rolled on his back, and he grimaced in pain.
The left eyebrow of the Ghost Infant began to rise while the right one furrowed. Its cheeks puffed up, and I knew it was about to breathe fire again. I quickly pulled Big Mouth Lee away, rolling over and knocking over a table to shield us from the black flames. A large hole was burned into the tabletop, and my hair and eyebrows were singed!
"This flame contains Corpse Poison; remember to cook glutinous rice porridge and drink three bowls to purge it out!"
"Do you want to see tomorrow's sunlight?" The Ghost Infant sneered coldly but seemed to lose its urgency for a moment. It wanted to play with us like a cat with a mouse, not rushing to kill us because it found this amusing!
"Invoke the spirit!"
If it weren't for Big Mouth Lee's reminder at that moment, we would have surely perished at the hands of the Ghost Infant that night.
