The seven Coffin Nails each measured three inches long. Seven represents the essence of Yang, hence there were seven in total. The Outsider was also three inches long, embodying pure Yang energy. After being consecrated by Li Zhenren from Maoshan, it became a powerful tool to suppress Evil Spirits.
Qingyunzi was drenched in cold sweat, sitting cross-legged on the coffin, chanting spells without daring to relax even a bit. He exerted all his strength, causing the blade of his treasured sword to bend. However, the sword would straighten and bend again as it fought against the two bodies and the Mountain Spirit.
The old man roared, "All Zombies are paper tigers!" He swung a hammer in his right hand while gripping a Coffin Nail tightly in his left. He rushed towards the Mountain Spirit and stood before it. The Mountain Spirit bared its teeth like a dog, snapping at the air. Yet, it was restrained by the two bodies and could not gain any advantage.
"If he doesn't die, my brother will!" Zhou Daming summoned an unexpected courage and picked up a shoulder pole, striking fiercely at the Mountain Spirit's head. With a crack, the pole broke into two pieces.
The Mountain Spirit was evidently drawn to Zhou Daming's attack. Seizing the opportunity, the old man lunged forward, pressing the Coffin Nail against the Mountain Spirit's chest with his left hand while swinging the hammer back with his right and bringing it down forcefully. A loud clang echoed as his palm went numb; the Coffin Nail was completely bent.
In a fit of rage, Huangmao rolled off the ground and jumped onto the Mountain Spirit's back, gripping its neck tightly and pulling backward with all his might. The old man discarded both the Coffin Nail and hammer, took several steps back, then charged forward again, leaping up to kick the Mountain Spirit hard. The Mountain Spirit was caught off guard and fell backward, nearly crushing Huangmao into a meat patty.
Seeing an opportunity, Qingyunzi performed a somersault off the coffin, bending his left index and middle fingers into hooks as he aimed for the Mountain Spirit's eyes. With swift movements, he plunged both fingers into each eye. With a sickening crunch, his fingers broke as he extracted both eyeballs, black blood spraying up to half a meter high while eerie energy gushed forth. The Mountain Spirit howled in pain; it violently swung its arms, sending me and Huangmao flying three or four meters away. Zhou Daming was kicked out of the yard.
I collided with a tree; a willow tree about the thickness of a cup was snapped in half upon impact. Black smoke billowed from my body as I felt darkness enveloping me. At that moment, I woke up—my physical body had returned!
The boy with the severed arm fared worse; he was split in two, his upper and lower halves separated with black blood pooling on the ground along with intestines and internal organs spilling everywhere.
With its eyes gouged out by Qingyunzi, the Mountain Spirit leaked eerie energy. It seemed to lose its sense of direction as it clung to a large willow tree, using its claw-like hands to scratch deep gashes into the trunk that were three to four centimeters deep, causing leaves to rain down around us. We finally got a moment to catch our breath.
"What on earth is this thing?"
"Iron Corpse!"
"Are you kidding me? Isn't Iron Corpse Mei Chaofeng? Hahaha! This is getting interesting; here comes Copper Corpse Chen Xuanfeng!" Zhou Daming couldn't help but burst into laughter while we all felt embarrassed at his foolishness.
"The Daoism of Maoshan has a sect that survives by walking in shadows, specializing in corpse refining and Corpse Chasing. They often isolate themselves in desolate mountains searching for individuals with extreme Yin or Yang characteristics for their practices. Corpses can be classified into Zombies and Mountain Spirits. Among Mountain Spirits are variations like Flesh Walkers, Zombies, Earth Corpses, Ceramic Corpses, Copper Corpses, Iron Corpses, Silver Armored Corpses, and Golden Armored Corpses. The most formidable among them is known as Female Corpse—the ancient goddess of corpses. This Iron Corpse was scalded to death by molten iron during its life; after death, it was buried in a large urn filled with tainted blood in an extremely Yin location and consumed human blood daily for eighty-one days before transforming into an Iron Corpse."
“Qingyunzi, is there a way to break it?”
“Yes! If it’s the work of an extremely Yin person, just use Black Dog Blood and Coffin Nail to break it!”
“If the Coffin Nail is bent and the Black Dog Blood is ineffective, then it must be the work of an extremely Yang person?”
“Exactly! There’s a method to break this extremely Yang person’s work in Mausoleum Secrets! Unfortunately, I only caught a glimpse of that book once and have no way of knowing the method!” Hearing him say this, I was suddenly enlightened.
“I happen to have Mausoleum Secrets upstairs. Master, please hold on for a moment!”
“Don’t worry! The eerie energy in his eyes has already leaked out! I can temporarily restrain it with the Divine Whip!” Qingyunzi took out a slender whip and jumped up, striking at the Mountain Spirit with fierce blows. The Mountain Spirit howled in pain, its flesh being torn apart. It let out a chilling sound; if we weren’t on the outskirts of the city, we would surely attract unwanted attention.
I ran wildly, not daring to waste a moment. I hurried upstairs to retrieve Mausoleum Secrets. I tossed it to Qingyunzi, who caught it with one hand. His eyes immediately lit up like he was counting money as he flipped through the pages and found the method to restrain the Pure Yang Iron Corpse.
“Xiazi, do you have your Master Copper Seal with you?”
“Yes!”
“According to what’s written, this Pure Yang Iron Corpse will have a White Malevolence inside its mouth that hasn’t been expelled. I’ll use Mysterious Power to force it out. When it opens its mouth to exhale, Xiazi, you need to shove the Master Copper Seal inside! Do you understand?”
The last breath of a dead person is White Malevolence, the most resentful and poisonous breath in their body. If a dead person expels this breath and someone inhales it, they would either die on the spot or become gravely ill.
“I understand!”
Qingyunzi formed hand signs for the Mystic Emperor Technique and thrust his middle finger into the Iron Corpse's forehead. A cloud of black smoke erupted. Qingyunzi then gestured towards the Divine Whip and struck the Mountain Spirit over a hundred times. The Mountain Spirit's face grew darker, its throat gurgling as if a force was trying to burst forth.
Qingyunzi let out a loud shout, "I don't believe you can't be beaten out!" The Divine Whip came crashing down like a rainstorm. The Mountain Spirit was struck and jumped up, its body riddled with wounds. Even its cheeks puffed out like a toad, inflating and deflating. Just as it seemed that the White Malevolence was about to spew forth, Qingyunzi leaped and brought the whip down again with great force.
"Xiazi, let that Killing Intent come out, quickly prepare to stuff the copper seal!"
Before the words were fully spoken, the Mountain Spirit seemed to let out a loud fart, spewing a cloud of black smoke from its mouth, the stench overwhelming, causing Huangmao to gag. I paid no mind to the foul odor and grabbed the top of the copper seal, shoving it into the Mountain Spirit's mouth. This action proved effective.
The Mountain Spirit displayed an expression of extreme pain, its face contorted completely. Its rotten teeth were black and foul-smelling, exuding a nauseating stench. Flames erupted from its mouth as it clutched a willow tree tightly, its hands crushing the trunk until it cracked, shaking the Willow Leaf down in a flurry! "Damn it, what immense strength! You scared me to death!" I felt terrified as cold sweat broke out on my back!
The Master Copper Seal, possessing the power of generations of masters, held immense Spiritual Energy. It could transmit the master's Mysterious Power through its pores throughout the Zombie's body, igniting the karmic fire within and burning away its Eerie Energy.
The Zombie collapsed to the ground, clawing at the earth but unable to stand up no matter what.
Qingyunzi called for me to bring him the Butcher's Knife. He swung the knife down hard onto the Mountain Spirit's head. Its skull was cleaved in half. Then he used the tip of the knife to extract a token from that half of its skull. As soon as that token was pulled out, the Mountain Spirit immediately wilted and became motionless!
"This is a Corpse-Repelling Token; it truly belongs to them!" Qingfengzi stared at a pure black iron token engraved with strange patterns.
"What is it?"
"Nothing much; we should first burn these three corpses; it's urgent—delays can lead to changes!"
"Agreed!"
"We need to burn them together with willow wood and the three corpses to avoid future troubles."
Willow wood can exorcise evil; according to the Mausoleum Secrets, when Gate God Shentu captures ghosts, he binds them with Willow Branches and tosses them to feed tigers.
We worked through the night, cutting down the willow trees and piling them into a heap. We then tossed three corpses on top, doused them with gasoline, and set them ablaze. The flames surged high, thick smoke billowed, and a foul stench filled the air. Amidst the crackling of the fire, it seemed as if the sounds of human agony mingled with the flames. The fire burned for half the night before gradually dying down, and I retrieved the Master Copper Seal.
Qingyunzi collected the three corpses and placed them in a copper box. He then used a carpenter's ink pot to draw five ink lines in a specific pattern. Accompanied by incantations, a Soul-Settling Fire Talisman was affixed to the box.
As dawn approached, we drove out to the outskirts. Qingyunzi used a compass to locate a mound of earth, intending to use Yang Qi to dispel the lingering malice. He marked out a square area and began digging a pit three feet and six inches deep. After offering a cup of chicken blood as a tribute, he took out three coins each from the Shunzhi, Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, and Jiaqing dynasties, arranging them at the bottom of the pit according to the divisions of the fifteen main stars of the Ziwei constellation. He then covered them with lime and finally buried them with yellow earth.
The five imperial coins are relatively recent and widely available, making them easy for ordinary people to obtain. With their combination of earthly, human, and celestial energies along with the authority of the five emperors, they can stabilize homes and dispel malevolent forces. From the perspective of Five Elements theory, these copper coins gather vitality; Shunzhi belongs to northern water, Kangxi to eastern wood, Yongzheng to central earth, Qianlong to western metal, and Jiaqing to southern fire—forming a complete triad of nine movements. Thus, they possess a strong ability to counter Killing Intent.
Once everything was buried properly, it was already morning. Qingyunzi recited melodiously, “All beings shall receive blessings; boundless fortune shall grace life and death!” This line is from the Lingbao Duren Jing.
I looked up at the sky and seemed to see three streams of ghostly energy wafting up from underground, slowly ascending into the air. I heard Qingyunzi muttering to himself, “Evil deeds can be avoided; self-inflicted misfortune cannot be survived!”
It was just beginning to brighten when we returned to our lodgings for a brief rest.
Suddenly, there was a series of urgent knocks on the door followed by Huang Mao's anxious voice.
“Xiazi! Old Man Li! Fat Brother! Wake up! Something big has happened!”
Still groggy, we got dressed and followed Huang Mao downstairs into the room where the coffin was kept. The scene before us left us utterly shocked.
