At that moment, a figure emerged from the water. Bathed in the bright moonlight, it was clear that the figure was a tall man with long black hair, dressed in tattered clothes, looking disheveled and resembling the beggars on the street.
The man walked over to where the crows had fallen earlier and began rummaging through the grass. After a while, he managed to find the bodies of the crows.
"Damn it, these worthless birds aren't even enough to fill my teeth!" he cursed under his breath. He plucked the feathers off the crows, gathered some twigs by the shore, and started a fire to roast them.
Not long after, the man's body suddenly convulsed. Strange black symbols appeared on his skin, writhing like living creatures as they desperately burrowed into him.
"Ah! Damn it, why do I have to suffer like this?" he let out a desperate scream, his body swaying before collapsing to the ground. He became immobile, yet his eyes remained open, clearly feeling the intense pain surging within him.
Half an hour later, the black symbols retreated back into his body, leaving him covered in a layer of black filth, with only his eyes visible.
His eyes were filled with cold killing intent as he turned to look at the bottom of the lake. Clenching his fists tightly, he muttered to himself, "Old Man, just you wait. Sooner or later, I will leave this place! I will make you regret not killing me!"
After resting for a while and regaining some strength, he got up from the ground and rolled the black filth into thumb-sized mud pills, casually tossing them aside.
If anyone were to see those mud pills on the ground, they would instantly recognize them as identical to the one Yang Xiaochao had given me.
After finishing the charred crow meat, he lay on the shore gazing at the moon above him, showing no signs of wanting to sleep.
It wasn't until the moon set and the sun rose that he reluctantly turned and jumped back into the lake, quickly disappearing from sight.
At eight in the morning, I opened my eyes and got up from the floor of my dormitory, rubbing my sleepy eyes. The reason I was sleeping on the floor was that my bed had been taken over by Qiu Ye.
Last night, I had finally managed to find Qiu Ye and used all my efforts to cheer her up. In retaliation for my efforts, she made me sleep on the floor for a night.
Though I was somewhat unwilling, seeing Qiu Ye's almost explosive expression of grievance made me grit my teeth and endure sleeping on the floor.
Looking at the extra blanket on the ground warmed my heart slightly; Qiu Ye wasn't so cold-hearted after all.
Seeing that Qiu Ye was still asleep, I quietly stepped out to buy two breakfasts. By the time I returned, Qiu Ye had already woken up.
After we finished washing up, we sat at the dormitory table eating breakfast. Qiu Ye looked like a starving ghost, hoarding both servings of breakfast I had bought and devouring them without a care for her image.
I shook my head in disbelief and asked, "Qiu Ye, what time are we leaving? How far is Yang Xiaochao's place from here? Should we prepare anything in advance?"
With her mouth stuffed full of buns, Qiu Ye glanced at me and mumbled, "We just need to wait here; someone will come to pick us up soon."
Then she buried her head back into her food, completely ignoring me.
Taking advantage of Qiu Ye's meal time, I started organizing my backpack, packing all the tools I might need. From what I heard from Yang Xiaochao, the place we were going to could be dangerous, so I also packed the Nine-Dragon Cauldron into my bag.
By the time I finished packing, it was already nine o'clock. Qiu Ye, having eaten her fill, lay on the bed playing with her phone. Not long after, there was a rhythmic knock on the door—three short knocks followed by two long ones.
"The people who are picking us up are here; we can leave now." Qiu Ye got up from the bed, opened the door, and stepped outside first.
I grabbed my backpack and followed her out, seeing two burly men in black suits standing outside. They had a faint yellow aura around them, just like Qiu Ye; they were also Grave Robbers.
"Master Jiang Ling, please get in the car!" The two men politely ushered me into the car parked outside the dormitory. Once all four of us were inside, we sped off down the road.
I played with my phone for a while but soon felt drowsy. Stretching lazily, I turned to Qiu Ye and said, "Yawn! Qiu Ye, I'm going to take a nap. Wake me up when we get there."
I hadn't slept well last night, and as soon as I closed my eyes, I quickly drifted off.
"Jiang Ling, wake up! We're here!" Qiu Ye nudged me awake.
Rubbing my eyes, I turned to look out the window and noticed that the sun was nearly setting; it was already getting dark outside. Checking the time, I saw it was six in the evening.
I stepped out of the car and glanced around. The area was desolate except for a rundown motel not far away.
"Qiu Ye, are you sure this is the right place?" I asked skeptically, furrowing my brow.
Qiu Ye nodded, waved at me, and smiled, saying, "Jiang Ling, my boss just asked me to bring you here. I don't know anything else. If you have any questions, you can ask someone in the hotel. My mission is complete, so I'll head back now."
With that, Qiu Ye returned to the car. The other two people smiled and nodded at me, giving a brief greeting before driving away.
Soon, Qiu Ye and the others disappeared from my sight, leaving me standing there all alone. I turned to look at the hotel in front of me, a glint of determination flashing in my eyes as I muttered to myself, "I want to see what Yang Xiaochao called me to this godforsaken place for!"
I stepped forward toward the hotel. When I pushed the door open and walked inside, I found the decor to be quite simple, but the environment was clean.
"Hey handsome, are you here to book a room? Are you alone?" Just as I was looking around, a sweet-voiced girl approached me with a smile.
I activated my Yin-Yang Eyes and looked at her, noticing that she didn't have any strange aura about her; she was just an ordinary person and not a Grave Robber.
I nodded and smiled back, saying, "I'd like to book a room for one night."
"Sure, please follow me." The girl politely led me to the front desk and skillfully booked a room for me. After I paid, I received a room key.
"Room 07! The seventh room on the second floor?" I frowned slightly and muttered to myself, "Interesting. I want to see what kind of ghostly things are in this Room 07!"
