The ghostly face had only a simple outline, enough to discern that this companion, Soul, was a Male Ghost, but the specifics of his situation remained unclear.
"White Alliance, put your clothes on properly. I'm taking you somewhere," I said after seeing that ghostly face, already convinced by White Alliance's words. I patted White Alliance on the shoulder and led him toward a nearby Pavilion.
The Pavilion was built by the riverside, and many passersby would come in to rest for a while. Even though it was nighttime, the Pavilion was still filled with people, creating a lively atmosphere.
White Alliance looked at the bustling Pavilion and frowned in confusion. "Jiang Ling, why did you bring me here? Are you planning to exorcise the ghost attached to me here?"
I took out a brush and vermilion from my pocket and casually nodded. "White Alliance, just sit inside the Pavilion for now. Once I set up the formation, I'll help you get rid of that ghost."
White Alliance pointed at the crowd inside the Pavilion and said, "But there are too many people here; it's not convenient to perform Taoist Magic. Jiang Ling, shouldn't we find a quieter place?"
White Alliance had been following me for some time and had learned some things that a Taoist Master should be cautious about. I had previously been told that unless absolutely necessary, a Taoist Master should not perform Taoist Magic in busy public places to avoid drawing societal attention.
If any Taoist Master dared to flaunt their Taoist Magic recklessly in public, relevant authorities would naturally come looking for them, at least accusing them of promoting superstitions and disturbing public order.
I pulled White Alliance into the Pavilion and explained, "White Alliance, don't worry; I know what I'm doing. The reason I brought you here is to use the Yang Qi from these people in the Pavilion to temporarily suppress the ghost attached to you, confusing its perception so it won't notice my setup.
Once I lay down the formation outside the Pavilion, that ghost won't be able to escape even if it tries. I'll wait until midnight when everyone has left before making my move."
After hearing my words, White Alliance nodded and quietly sat inside the Pavilion. During this time, I took my brush and began setting up talismans outside the Pavilion. Some passersby gathered around to watch, but they merely thought I was a street artist; no one recognized that what I was drawing on the ground were Taoist Talismans.
About half an hour later, I finished laying out the talismans outside the Pavilion and used my Master's Blood to craft an amulet for White Alliance to prevent the ghost within him from becoming desperate.
Time passed quickly, and before long, it was one-thirty in the morning. At this moment, a white mist enveloped the air, reducing visibility to just ten meters. The temperature inside the Pavilion had dropped significantly, creating a chilly sensation.
"What’s going on? Don’t these people need to go home and sleep?" I rubbed my arms and looked at the crowd packed inside the Pavilion. Even along the roadside, there was a dense mass of people. Some, unable to find a place to stand, had climbed up the trees by the road, peering toward the river with night vision goggles.
Under normal circumstances, at this hour, these people should have been heading home to sleep. As the saying goes, unusual occurrences often indicate something strange is afoot.
I reached out and tapped a young man in his twenties standing nearby. With a smile, I asked, "Brother, what are you all doing here so late at night instead of going home to sleep?"
The young man turned to look me in the eye, excitement lighting up his face as he replied, "Brother, is this your first time here? Let me tell you, there are a bunch of spirits hidden in that river; they can even take on human forms! Most people are here just to see what these spirits look like. But I've seen those spirits plenty of times; they’re nothing special. I came specifically to buy some fresh food from them.
Let me tell you, the food those spirits sell is extraordinary. There was one time they sold a Thousand-Year-Old Clam for ten thousand dollars! I heard that after eating that old clam, the buyer’s white hair turned black again—he looked ten years younger! And that buyer even found a pearl the size of an egg inside that clam; it was extremely rare and could sell for several thousand dollars on its own.
However, those spirits only appear once a week and at unpredictable times. I heard about this gathering and drove over as fast as I could."
Listening to his introduction left me somewhat bewildered; my mind struggled to catch up. I rubbed my temples thoughtfully before asking, "Brother, but those are spirits—aren't you afraid they might eat you?"
He shot me an incredulous look and replied dismissively, "Brother, have you watched too much Journey to the West? There aren’t that many man-eating spirits around. I've seen those spirits several times already, and I’ve never seen them eat anyone."
Feeling embarrassed, I scratched my ear and smiled at him before probing for more details about those spirits.
After a while, I suddenly sensed a strong aura of spirit energy coming from the river, mixed with several weaker energies—clearly indicating a large group of spirits approaching us.
The crowd gathered by the river couldn’t detect the spirit energy themselves, but they noticed that the mist on the river had parted to reveal a clear path. They understood that the spirits had arrived.
"Here they come, here they come! The monsters are coming, everyone get ready and take out your phones to take pictures!" The crowd by the river erupted in shouts, instantly bringing the area to life. Many passersby pulled out their phones, eagerly waiting for the monsters in the water to appear. I felt a flicker of interest and stood up to look toward the riverbank.
The guy next to me tugged at my arm and kindly reminded me, "Brother, don't let anyone fool you. When those creatures show up, they'll first give us a wave of benefits. If you're busy taking pictures with your phone, you might miss the opportunity. Hehe, since we hit it off, just stick with me later."
"Thanks for the reminder, brother." I nodded in gratitude, though I was a bit puzzled, then turned back to gaze at the surface of the river.
About a minute later, the group of creatures was only a few meters from the shore; people on the bank could even vaguely see their figures beneath the water.
"Boom~~" At that moment, a splash erupted from the river's surface as a group of indistinct shapes surged out from underwater, accompanied by a flurry of objects flying toward the shore.
The guy beside me saw what was coming and his eyes sparkled with excitement. He said to me, "Brother, here comes the benefit! Get ready to grab it!"
