I walked along the main street of the county town, surrounded by only a few shops selling local specialties. The rest were various storefronts, including hardware stores, motorcycle shops, and barbershops—an eclectic mix of businesses.
I strolled through the few commercial streets in the county town but found nothing that piqued my interest. Shaking my head in frustration, I sighed and muttered to myself, "Sigh, there’s nothing fun here. I might as well go back and rest."
At that moment, a man in his thirties approached me. Despite it being the height of summer, he was wearing a long coat, which looked particularly out of place.
"Who are you?" I asked warily, my tone icy.
The man flashed an evil grin and abruptly opened his coat. Speaking rapidly, he said, "Hey there, do you want a phone? The latest Fruit Phone! I can give it to you for a low price—just eight hundred bucks."
I stared at him in disbelief; I never expected to encounter a scammer on the streets of this county town.
"I'm not interested. Go find someone else," I replied curtly, brushing past him and heading toward the roadside to catch a taxi back to my hotel. After running into that scammer, I had lost all desire to continue exploring.
"Hey! You stop right there! How dare you come into my shop and steal!" As I passed an alleyway, I heard shouting. Curiosity got the better of me, and I turned to look. To my surprise, I saw four or five fierce-looking young men chasing after a boy who appeared to be around fourteen or fifteen years old.
The boy looked clearly malnourished; he was so thin that there wasn't an ounce of flesh on him. His clothes were tattered and worn, making him look pitiful.
"Hmph, White Alliance! Where do you think you're going?" The scammer from earlier ran over and blocked the alley's exit. He kicked at the boy with force, sending him flying.
White Alliance quickly scrambled to his feet. Despite a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth, he remained silent and fiercely clutched a bottle in his right hand. He stared defiantly into the scammer's eyes and said resolutely, "Ma Yiwen, you scammers! According to our previous agreement, I've worked for you for a month. But not only did you refuse to pay me, you wouldn't even give me the medicine for my grandfather. I only took what was owed to me; I didn’t steal anything from you."
"Hah! White Alliance, that's where you're wrong. We fed you and provided you with a place to stay—do you think that comes for free? You haven't earned a single penny for us yet still expect benefits? You're dreaming." Ma Yiwen scoffed dismissively as he stepped closer to White Alliance. Grabbing his shoulder with one hand while holding out the other menacingly, he sneered, "White Alliance, hand over everything you have on you. For your grandfather's sake, I'll let you off this time. Otherwise, you know what will happen."
Hearing Ma Yiwen's words, a fierce glint flashed in White Alliance's eyes. Without warning, he swung his fist and struck Ma Yiwen squarely on the nose, shouting loudly, "Ma Yiwen, get the hell away from me!"
"Ah! White Alliance, I'm going to kill you!" Ma Yiwen screamed, tears streaming down his face from the pain. Instinctively, he released his grip on White Alliance's shoulder and covered his nose with both hands, trying to stop the bleeding.
Seizing the opportunity, White Alliance quickly darted toward the alley's exit. Unfortunately, he had barely taken a few steps when the group of burly men from earlier caught up with him and kicked him against the wall.
"White Alliance, you've really got guts! How dare you lay a hand on Boss Ma? Just watch me take you down today!" The burly men shouted as they surrounded White Alliance, launching a flurry of punches and kicks.
"Mmm mmm~~" White Alliance let out muffled sounds from his mouth as he desperately protected the bottle in his hands. No matter how much they hit him, he refused to plead for mercy.
I had been watching from the sidelines and began to understand the situation. I rushed over and delivered seven swift kicks that sent the men attacking White Alliance flying.
I reached down to help White Alliance up. When I saw the bruises all over his body, I guessed he had endured quite a beating from these men. My expression turned cold as I turned to face the burly men and said with irritation, "You big guys ganging up on a kid like this—aren't you ashamed?"
"Who the hell are you? I'll make sure you regret this," one of the burly men growled as they scrambled to their feet. They felt humiliated by my surprise attack and were now filled with anger, eager to rush at me.
At that moment, Ma Yiwen managed to stop his nosebleed and took a few steps forward to block his subordinates. He scrutinized me carefully and asked politely, "Young man, who are you? This is a private matter for our Horse Head Gang; it's best if you don't interfere."
I gestured for White Alliance to leave first and then stood at the alley's exit alone, looking disdainfully at Ma Yiwen and his gang. "You're Ma Yiwen, right? I'm Jiang Ling, just an ordinary college student with no connections. You can rest assured about that. If you all are too scared to lay a hand on me, then I suggest your so-called Horse Head Gang disband immediately."
Ma Yiwen glanced at White Alliance sneaking away and snorted coldly without rushing after him. His eyes were filled with murderous intent as he spoke darkly, "Jiang Ling, your words are quite arrogant; it's easy to get beaten for that. Didn't your teacher teach you to be polite when talking to others?"
I shook my head and drew my Sabre calmly. "I only remember my teacher telling us that if we see injustice on the road, we should draw our swords to help. Since I've encountered you scoundrels today, I'll do my part."
I swiftly dashed toward Ma Yiwen and the others. When I was just two steps away from them, my Sabre sliced through the air with rapid precision, delivering a flurry of strikes before they even had a chance to react.
As I tucked the Sabre into my pocket, blood erupted from their bodies. They clutched their wounds, eyes wide with terror as they stared at me, unable to comprehend how I had attacked so quickly.
"Ma Yiwen, consider this a warning. If I catch you causing trouble again, I won’t hold back," I said coldly before turning on my heel and leaving. I hailed a taxi on my way and headed straight back to the hotel.
