After three days of military training, we stood in military posture under the sun for hours on end, with hardly any breaks. All the freshmen were tanned to a deep brown, and every night when we returned to the dormitory, we were utterly exhausted, collapsing onto our beds without a hint of energy left.
Fortunately, I had been practicing martial arts since childhood, so my physical fitness was among the best of all the newcomers. This level of military training was a piece of cake for me.
Even though I wanted to keep a low profile and just blend into the ranks, my relaxed demeanor caught the attention of our instructor, Wang Yasheng.
This morning, during roll call, Wang Yasheng called me aside. With a cheerful smile, he patted my shoulder and said, "Jiang Ling, your physical fitness is impressive. I've noticed your performance over the past few days; I really admire you."
Hearing Wang Yasheng's words made me break out in a cold sweat. I felt a chill run down my spine. I swallowed hard and quickly saluted him, saying cautiously, "Thank you for your appreciation, Instructor Wang. I'll continue to work hard. If there's nothing else, I'd like to return to training with my classmates."
After these few days of interaction, we had gained a more comprehensive understanding of Wang Yasheng. We observed that he was a typical person who smiled on the surface but was ruthless behind the scenes. If Wang Yasheng smiled at you, it usually meant trouble was coming.
The last time he smiled at someone from our academy was when one of us was late by just a minute; he cheerfully made us all run twenty laps around the basketball court as punishment.
Now, seeing Wang Yasheng call me out alone and flash that unsettling smile made me want to escape back to the military training group as quickly as possible.
Wang Yasheng clearly had no intention of letting me go. He gently shook his head and said with a smile, "Jiang Ling, I have good news for you: you won't be training with them anymore."
Seeing the serious expression on Wang Yasheng's face filled me with an inexplicable sense of unease. I furrowed my brow and asked, "Uh, Instructor Wang, if I'm not training with them, what am I supposed to do?"
Wang Yasheng pointed to three other military training teams nearby and said with a grin, "From now on, you'll be challenging the freshmen from those three teams. I only have one requirement: you need to bring honor to our team and not let us down; otherwise, you know what the consequences will be."
After finishing his sentence, he turned to look into my eyes, a cold glint flashing in his gaze.
After hearing Wang Yasheng's arrangements, I felt a bit speechless and could only smile wryly as I nodded. Then, I saluted Wang Yasheng and said loudly, "Understood, Instructor Wang."
The four of us in the Military Training Team were arranged to train together to foster competition among us. During breaks in the Military Training, our instructors would organize various activities for us. There were games like cockfighting, wrestling, singing, telling jokes—just a variety of fun.
In the past, I had refrained from participating because it felt like bullying the freshmen if I competed in physical contests. As for singing and similar activities, those were clearly the domain of the two girls' teams, and I had no chance to get involved.
Wang Yasheng's task for me wasn't to perform in singing or similar events but to secure first place in other competitions. The reason he suddenly approached me was that our academy's team hadn't won any matches recently, which was making Wang Yasheng's reputation suffer.
After exchanging a few more words with me, Wang Yasheng instructed me to rest under the shade of a tree to conserve my energy for the upcoming competitions.
Sitting beneath the tree, I glanced over at the three other Military Training Teams nearby and noticed that each team had three or four members resting in the shade, just like me—these were also competitors for the upcoming events.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I touched my ear and muttered to myself with a glint in my eye, "Brothers, it's unfortunate for you this time."
Wang Yasheng returned to training the remaining students, having them stand at attention and march in formation while putting them through various drills that left the freshmen groaning in despair.
After about two hours, Wang Yasheng finally allowed all the freshmen to stop and announced a twenty-minute break.
At this moment, the other three Military Training Teams also paused. Their instructors moved closer to Wang Yasheng with smug expressions on their faces because their freshmen had won competitions while only Wang Yasheng's team had not won even once.
I watched as the three instructors surrounded Wang Yasheng, playfully draping their arms over his shoulders. One of them turned to glance at where I was sitting and teased, "Tsk tsk, Wang Yasheng, what's going on today? You actually picked out a seed player. This isn't like you."
"Wang Yasheng, your freshmen are all from the Sports Academy; logically speaking, their physical fitness should be better than others. How come you've only selected one person?" another instructor asked. His tone clearly indicated he wasn't genuinely interested in hearing Wang Yasheng's response. Just as he finished speaking, another instructor chimed in with a laugh, "Haha! Don't tease Wang Yasheng too much; considering how weak his team is, picking out even one seed player is already impressive."
"Ha ha, indeed. Otherwise, Wang Yasheng wouldn't have lost every single time," the two of them chimed in, completely dismissing Wang Yasheng.
Hearing the instructor's mockery, Wang Yasheng's face turned ashen. In truth, the four of them had a close relationship, and although Wang Yasheng knew they were just joking, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of anger. He snorted coldly and confidently declared, "Hmph, dealing with those weaklings on your side, we only need one person from our team."
The three instructors looked at Wang Yasheng in surprise. They exchanged glances before one of them spoke up, "Wang Yasheng, you're so confident. Let's have a rematch then. Are you brave enough to accept?"
Without hesitation, Wang Yasheng nodded and replied, "Who’s afraid? Let’s get started."
