Huang Ping reported the situation he gathered from me to his superiors in the bureau. Since this was merely my speculation without any concrete evidence, and given that I was already a suspect, most of the personnel had been assigned to search for evidence in the woods where the body was buried, as well as lying in wait at the funeral home where the body had gone missing. In the end, Huang Ping only managed to request seven officers to accompany him in investigating the owner of those withered arms.
Huang Ping brought those seven officers to the crime scene captured by the surveillance cameras. He walked to the position where the mastermind had stood and looked around, realizing that he was in a blind spot of the cameras. There was only one surveillance camera on the road, and although there were many types of shops nearby, none of them had visible cameras outside.
Huang Ping's expression grew serious as he stroked his chin with his right hand, his brow furrowing in deep thought. Before coming here, he wasn't entirely sure that the owner of those withered arms was indeed the mastermind. However, after considering it from their perspective, if the owner of those arms hadn't planned this out beforehand, it would have been too coincidental for him to avoid detection by the roadside cameras without ever being captured on film. Huang Ping now suspected that the owner of those withered arms was indeed the true mastermind behind it all.
A glimmer of insight flashed in Huang Ping's eyes as he pointed to the shops on either side and said to the seven officers, "Everyone split up and ask around at the nearby shops. Also, check if their cameras captured anything during the incident. Even if they didn't catch anything, we can still ask if anyone recognizes the owner of those withered arms. After all, he seems very familiar with this area and its camera coverage. Let's move quickly; we must find that person before nightfall."
Huang Ping had heard from me that tonight was the last night of the Twelve Fiends Resurrection Technique, and he believed that the owner of those withered arms would strike again.
Meanwhile, after Zhao Sanbao and I exited the interrogation room, we were placed in a Temporary Detention Room equipped with chairs and a bed—conditions that weren't too bad.
"Hey? Director Zhao, Jiang Ling, what are you doing here?" As soon as Zhao Sanbao and I stepped inside, we heard Wu Jie’s voice. I scanned the room and noticed that aside from Wu Jie, Master Chen was also present, along with Chen Mengmeng's ghost. However, I found something odd about her appearance.
I discreetly activated my Daoist Magic, allowing a White Dao Light to flicker in my eyes as I quickly scanned Chen Mengmeng's spirit. To my surprise, I discovered that her soul was missing one soul fragment. A vague understanding of her situation began to form in my mind.
Chen Mengmeng was startled by my gaze; she quickly hid behind Wu Jie and tugged at his arm nervously. "Brother Wu Jie, this person's gaze is really scary! You have to protect me; I don't want to leave my dad."
Last night marked Chen Mengmeng's seventh day since her passing; logically speaking, she should have reported to the Underworld before midnight. Even if she didn't want to go, a Ghost Messenger would have come for her. Yet here she was still lingering in the Yang Realm, undoubtedly related to her missing soul fragment. A ghost with an incomplete soul would find it difficult even to reincarnate; if her fragments were turned into a demon, she might lose any chance of rebirth altogether.
I held no real malice toward Chen Mengmeng’s spirit; at most, I would use Buddhist Scriptures for the Departed to help her move on quickly. However, upon witnessing her behavior, I couldn't help but frown and look up at Wu Jie who was shielding her. With a puzzled tone, I asked him, "Wu Jie, can you see ghosts?"
Wu Jie smiled wryly and nodded. He then briefly recounted what had happened to him and how he encountered Chen Mengmeng along with her tragic story. Seeing that I had no intention of harming Chen Mengmeng eased his tension; he scratched his head awkwardly and smiled at me as he asked, "Jiang Ling, do you know why my eyes have changed like this?"
"Don't move, let me take a look at your eyes." I quickly walked up to Wu Jie, reached out, and lifted his eyelid. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a very fine pupil at the back of his eyeball. His situation was similar to that of my buddy Hu Yalong; both had accidentally awakened the Wisdom Eye.
I removed my hand from Wu Jie's eyelid and said seriously, "Wu Jie, your eyes have been forcibly opened to the Wisdom Eye, which is why you can see the surrounding Ghostly Beings. You now have two options. The first option is that I can help you seal the Wisdom Eye, so you won't see those Ghostly Beings anymore. The second option is to ignore it; the Wisdom Eye doesn't harm your vision, it simply grants you a skill."
It was Wu Jie's first time hearing about the existence of the Wisdom Eye, and his expression was filled with shock. However, he didn't know how to choose. Before meeting Chen Mengmeng, he would have undoubtedly chosen the first option without hesitation. But after encountering Chen Mengmeng, he suddenly realized that having the Wisdom Eye wasn't as terrible as he had imagined.
Wu Jie furrowed his brows tightly. He turned to glance at Chen Mengmeng behind him and saw her sparkling eyes meeting his gaze, accompanied by a radiant smile. After seeing Chen Mengmeng's smile, all his inner turmoil vanished. He turned to me and smiled, saying, "Jiang Ling, I choose the second option; I won't seal the Wisdom Eye."
"Alright, but if you change your mind later, you can come find me." I nodded. I wasn't too surprised by Wu Jie's choice because many Puppets who awakened the Wisdom Eye often felt a sense of novelty and chose not to seal it. However, once that novelty wore off, they would seek out a Taoist Master to help them seal it.
Master Chen had been quietly listening to my conversation with Wu Jie. He guessed that I was a master of Daoist Arts and rushed over to grab my hand, asking excitedly, "Master Jiang Ling, do you have a way to help me awaken the Wisdom Eye? I just want to see my daughter's soul for a moment."
I looked at Master Chen's red-rimmed eyes and then turned to glance at Chen Mengmeng hiding behind Wu Jie. My heart softened as I nodded and said, "Master Chen, I can let you see your daughter, but I can only allow you to meet her for ten minutes. After that, I will send her to the Underworld for reincarnation."
