Huang Ping slammed his hand on the table and shouted, "Jiang Ling, how dare you threaten us? You really have some nerve!"
I shook my head and replied seriously, "Comrade Jing Ha, I am not threatening you. I can tell you directly that you are facing a master skilled in Evil Spell. With your equipment, you won't be able to deal with him."
Although I recognized that the mastermind was casting the Twelve Fiends Resurrection Technique, I initially thought he would use magical artifacts to capture the souls. However, when I learned that he buried all the corpses together, I realized he was far more formidable than I had imagined.
The Soul Binding Artifact could invoke the Twelve Fiends Resurrection, but creating a vicious demon required a lengthy process of forty-nine days. However, if those corpses were gathered together and their flesh refined in advance, once all twelve bodies were assembled, using their blood and flesh as a catalyst and their souls as offerings would allow for the rapid creation of the desired demon.
I was certain that those corpses had already been partially refined; they were transforming into a semi-corporeal existence. When stimulated by the presence of Living Persons nearby, they would gradually awaken. Even without the mastermind's control, once night fell and yin prevailed over yang, they would instinctively attack any Living Person around them.
Seeing Huang Ping's skeptical expression about the existence of ghosts and monsters, I decided not to share my thoughts with him. After thinking for a moment, I asked, "Comrade Jing Ha, can you tell me how far your investigation has progressed? If there is indeed evidence, I will consider confessing everything."
Huang Ping looked at me in surprise. After hesitating for a moment, a glint of determination flashed in his eyes as he said, "Jiang Ling, we have found crucial surveillance footage regarding your involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Chen Mengmeng. You'd better confess voluntarily."
The surveillance footage Huang Ping mentioned did exist; however, when the police viewed it, they couldn't clearly see the faces of the criminals no matter what methods they used. Huang Ping revealed this footage to gauge my reaction.
I frowned and pretended to be frightened, but my expression quickly returned to normal. I looked at Huang Ping with a blank face and said, "Comrade Jing Ha, can I see your surveillance footage? If I can see the real footage, I will confess everything; otherwise, I won't admit to anything."
Huang Ping noticed the subtle changes in my expression. After contemplating for a while, he ultimately agreed to my request. Since that surveillance footage held little value, the police had not restricted its release. Showing it to me did not violate any regulations.
"Jiang Ling, take a good look; this is the crucial surveillance footage. However, we have already processed the images of the people inside so you won't be able to see them clearly." Huang Ping said as he took out his phone and opened a video before placing it in front of me.
I lowered my head to look at the video on his phone and saw that it showed Chen Mengmeng walking out of the school gate. Just as she reached an alleyway's entrance, five figures in black robes suddenly rushed out and shoved her into a black snake-skin bag. Then one of the black-robed figures turned and dashed into a nearby shop before disappearing from sight.
I watched that surveillance footage three times before finally returning the phone to Huang Ping. Looking into Huang Ping's eyes, I calmly said, "Comrade Jing Ha, have you noticed that the movements of those five men in black robes are quite awkward, and their feet cast no shadows? Haven't you ever suspected that these black-robed figures might not be living people?"
Upon hearing my hint, Huang Ping rewatched the surveillance video and discovered that Chen Mengmeng had a shadow beneath her feet, while the five black-robed figures did not. Moreover, their movements were not very fluid; they sometimes paused, making it easy to overlook if one wasn't paying close attention.
"Jiang Ling, all of this is merely a result of the filming techniques used in the surveillance footage and doesn't prove anything. You should just honestly confess your own issues!" Huang Ping looked into my eyes with a serious tone. However, I could sense a flicker of doubt in his heart.
I took the device from Huang Ping's hands again and paused the video at the moment just before the five black-robed figures appeared. I pointed to the far left corner of the surveillance image and said, "Comrade Jing Ha, take a close look at this spot. It’s no more than twenty meters from where Chen Mengmeng was kidnapped. There’s nothing here right now, but pay close attention; something unusual will appear shortly."
Huang Ping moved closer to me, his expression growing serious as he fixed his gaze on the area I was pointing to in the footage.
I pressed play again, and the video resumed. Suddenly, from the spot I had indicated, a pair of withered arms reached out. The right hand held an ancient bell, while the left clutched five palm-sized human-shaped talismans.
The person shook the bell a few times and then threw the five talismans into the air. At that moment, the talismans vanished, and simultaneously, the five black-robed figures appeared out of thin air in front of Chen Mengmeng.
The appearance of those withered arms lasted no more than half a second; it took me three viewings to catch this detail.
Huang Ping furrowed his brow tightly as he rewatched that pair of withered hands along with the bell and talismans seven or eight times. He fell deep into thought.
After a while, Huang Ping looked up at me and asked calmly, "Jiang Ling, how did you know someone would be there?"
His tone no longer carried an accusatory edge; instead, it felt more like he was seeking my insight.
I put on an enigmatic expression and smiled at Huang Ping. "Comrade Jing Ha, I've known for a long time. I am a Taoist Master; there are things you cannot see through, but I can see clearly. This person is behind it all. You might want to send someone to investigate other surveillance footage nearby; perhaps you can find this individual."
I pointed out a few things that Huang Ping needed to pay attention to and took a talisman out of my backpack, handing it to Huang Ping. After about ten minutes, Huang Ping hurriedly left the interrogation room with his phone in hand, starting to gather personnel and resume the investigation.
However, Zhao Sanbao and I still had our suspicions to clear, so we remained locked up in the police station. Fortunately, the interrogation regarding us had already ceased.
