Around eight o'clock this morning, Wu Jie arrived alone at a famous Ophthalmology Hospital in the city center, wearing sunglasses that concealed his eyes from view.
As Wu Jie stepped into the hospital, a doctor in a white coat approached him with a smile and nodded in greeting. However, Wu Jie remained expressionless, taking a step to the left to distance himself from the doctor. Throughout the encounter, he acted as if he had not seen the doctor at all and quickly moved forward.
The doctor watched Wu Jie walk away and shook his head, muttering, "What an impolite young man! He clearly saw me but chose not to greet me. How rude!"
After a few moments of grumbling, the doctor suddenly swayed and collided with the hospital wall, passing right through it and vanishing without a trace.
Not far away, Wu Jie caught this scene out of the corner of his eye. His heart raced in fright as he muttered to himself, "Another ghost! This is the twentieth Seven Ghosts I've encountered."
Since last night, Wu Jie had discovered that he could suddenly see Ghostly Beings around him. At first, he couldn't distinguish between Living Persons and ghosts on the street, so whenever he saw someone pass by, he would smile and greet them.
However, those Living Persons often looked at Wu Jie strangely when they noticed him talking to seemingly empty air or laughing for no reason. Many assumed he was mentally ill.
Realizing how others perceived him made Wu Jie certain that he could indeed see ghosts. From that point on, he donned sunglasses and ignored everyone who walked by.
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. After encountering so many ghosts, Wu Jie had begun to notice certain details. For instance, Ghostly Beings walked without lifting their feet, as if floating in mid-air; with careful observation, one could easily tell them apart. A more straightforward method was to check for shadows—those with shadows were Living Persons, while those without were spirits.
Earlier, Wu Jie had glanced at the doctor's feet and noticed there was no shadow beneath him, which led him to conclude that he was a ghost.
Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Wu Jie followed the hospital's procedures: he queued up for registration and went to the outpatient department for a diagnosis before undergoing various tests on his eyes.
It wasn't until after three in the afternoon that he was informed there was nothing wrong with his eyes. Holding the diagnosis report as he exited the Ophthalmology Hospital, his mood became somewhat complicated.
"Sigh, I originally thought there was something wrong with my eyes, but it seems my eyes are just fine," Wu Jie sighed as he tucked the diagnosis report into his pocket. "Looks like I can only go to that shop; maybe that beautiful woman can solve my eye problem."
Wu Jie quickly left the hospital and found a shop nearby. After having a hearty meal, he hailed a taxi and headed toward He Ying's shop.
Sitting in the back seat of the taxi, Wu Jie took off his sunglasses and glanced at the driver, only to find a man in his thirties or forties with stubble on his face and greasy hair that clearly hadn't been washed in a while.
"Hi, Big Brother! My name is Chen Mengmeng, and I'm nine years old this year. What's your name?" Suddenly, a little girl appeared from the front passenger seat. She knelt on the seat, turned around, and looked at Wu Jie with her big, sparkling eyes and an innocent smile that made her look very cute.
Wu Jie thought this girl was the driver's daughter. He smiled at her and said, "Cute, I'm Wu Jie. You shouldn't lean like that; it's dangerous."
Wu Jie spoke without lowering his voice intentionally. The driver furrowed his brow at Wu Jie's words, casting a puzzled glance through the rearview mirror.
Chen Mengmeng excitedly stood on her seat, reaching through the transparent divider of the taxi to tightly grasp Wu Jie's right hand. "Wu Jie Gege, you can really see me! That's great! Finally, someone can see me!"
Feeling the coldness of Chen Mengmeng's hands sent a shiver through Wu Jie. His face turned pale as he stammered, "Sister, are you a ghost?"
Without hesitation, Chen Mengmeng nodded. She released Wu Jie's hand and smiled reassuringly. "Wu Jie Gege, don't be scared. Even though I'm a ghost, I'm not a bad person; I won't hurt you."
Seeing Chen Mengmeng's adorable appearance made Wu Jie abandon his immediate plan to jump out of the car. After thinking for a moment, he glanced at the disheveled driver and asked, "Cute, do you need me to help with something?"
Chen Mengmeng nodded sadly as she looked at the driver beside them. "Wu Jie Gege, I want you to talk to my dad. Ever since I passed away, he's been drinking all the time and has completely changed."
"Tomorrow is my seventh day since passing; I'll have to report to the Underworld then. I can't stay by my dad's side anymore. So please, Wu Jie Gege, help me talk to him." Tears shimmered in her eyes as she looked at Wu Jie, softening his heart. He nodded and agreed to help the little girl.
Wu Jie knocked hard on the transparent glass partition of the taxi and shouted, "Master Chen, do you have a daughter named Chen Mengmeng? She's nine years old this year."
Master Chen's body trembled, and a fierce glint flashed in his eyes. He locked the taxi door and pulled over to the side of the road.
He pulled out a blade from beneath his seat, pointing it menacingly at Wu Jie, and shouted, "You! Your name is Wu Jie, right? I just saw you talking to thin air back there, and now you know my daughter's name. Who are you? Are you one of those people who kidnapped my daughter?"
Wu Jie was intimidated by Master Chen's fierce demeanor. He quickly waved his hands and pointed to the empty passenger seat where Loli sat. "Master Chen, please calm down. I heard it from your daughter herself. Let's talk this through; can you put down your weapon first?"
Master Chen glanced at the empty passenger seat beside him, his expression becoming complicated. He had always been superstitious and believed in the existence of ghosts.
He lowered the blade in his hand and asked with an expectant look, "Wu Jie, can you really see Cute's ghost?"
