"Die, you bastard!" The leading Vengeful Spirit shouted, its figure flickering as its right hand transformed into a sharp bone claw, lunging directly for my neck. The other surviving Vengeful Spirits around me, seeing that I was already at my limit, rushed toward me as well.
I paid no mind to the group of Vengeful Spirits charging at me. I shook my head lightly, muttering to myself in dissatisfaction, "Hmph, it seems I'm still a bit too weak!"
Taking a deep breath, I gathered a sliver of strength. Just as the group of Vengeful Spirits reached me, I pressed my hand against the Soul Mask on my face and calmly shouted, "Dog Treasure, wake up!"
As soon as my words fell, a dense Eerie Aura burst forth from the Soul Mask, enveloping my body. An aura comparable to that of the Eternal Ghost King radiated from me, shaking the surroundings.
"Ah!" The group of Vengeful Spirits nearby let out a wail as their bodies were blasted away by the impact of the Eerie Aura. Their souls became unstable, leaving them with no chance to approach me.
The leading Vengeful Spirit crawled back to its feet, fear evident in its eyes as it trembled and asked, "What... what have you done? How can your aura be so powerful?"
I had no intention of explaining the existence of Dog Treasure to the Vengeful Spirits; there was no need for such explanations. With a disdainful snort, I put away my Demon-Subduing Staff and approached the leading Vengeful Spirit with an air of mystery. Calmly, I asked, "Will you submit or die?"
"My lord, I am willing to submit to you!" The leading Vengeful Spirit did not hesitate for a moment. It swayed and quickly knelt before me. The other Vengeful Spirits followed suit without any hesitation, respectfully kneeling before me as well.
Looking at this group of Vengeful Spirits before me, I couldn't help but smile wryly and shake my head. Just a moment ago, they had wanted to take my life; now they were kneeling before me in reverence. This was the most authentic scene in the Ghost Realm—only those strong enough could survive here and command others' submission.
I knew that these Vengeful Spirits did not genuinely submit to me; however, under the pressure of my aura akin to that of a ghost king, their lives were at my whim. Thus, they dared not entertain any thoughts other than obeying me wholeheartedly.
I circled around the group of Vengeful Spirits and discreetly retracted the Eerie Aura back into the Soul Mask. I then leisurely approached the strongest among them and casually asked, "What is your name?"
"My lord, my name is Xu Qing!" The Vengeful Spirit replied respectfully.
I nodded and asked, "Xu Qing, do you know if there are any outsiders or Taoists around here?"
Xu Qing pondered for a moment, then shook his head and said, "My lord, aside from you, there are no other living people in this vicinity! Those outsiders who enter the Ghost Realm usually head deeper inside, where they can find opportunities to enhance their cultivation. If you want to find other living people, it would be best to look deeper into the Ghost Realm."
I furrowed my brow, lost in thought as Xu Qing's words stirred something within me. I knew that many masters from various Daoist sects entered the Ghost Realm, partly to slay ghostly beings and hone their skills, but more often than not, they sought opportunities within the Ghost Realm to break through their cultivation bottlenecks.
A glimmer of determination flashed in my eyes as I stroked my chin and thought to myself, "Since I've come to the Ghost Realm, should I venture deeper? With the Dog Treasure by my side, there shouldn't be too many ghostly beings that can threaten me. Even if I can't defeat them, with the Dog Treasure's protection, I can still escape!"
Once I made up my mind, the hesitation in my eyes vanished. I commanded the group of vengeful spirits to stand up and mimicked the tone of the mountain kings from Journey to the West as I addressed them: "You all will follow me into the Ghost Realm. I will lead you to carve out a territory so that all of you can be promoted to Millennium Ghost Generals!"
"We are willing to follow you, my lord, through mountains of blades and seas of fire!" The vengeful spirits became excited upon hearing my words. They had entered the Ghost Realm hoping to enhance their skills but lacked the strength to venture deep inside. Now that I was leading them in, they were naturally thrilled.
I noticed Xu Qing wearing a hesitant expression. Although he seemed excited, it appeared he had something to say. I glanced at him and said, "Xu Qing, if you have something on your mind, just speak up!"
Xu Qing respectfully clasped his hands together and replied, "My lord, I have been deep into the Ghost Realm once before. The situation there is quite chaotic, with factions everywhere! I suggest that before you enter the Ghost Realm, it would be best to gather a group of subordinates so that you can make a mark within."
Hearing Xu Qing's genuine suggestion changed my perception of him; it seemed he truly wanted to accompany me into the depths of the Ghost Realm. I nodded at him and asked, "Xu Qing, what suggestions do you have? Feel free to share!"
Seeing that I wasn't upset with him for speaking out of turn eased Xu Qing's mind significantly. A sly smile appeared on his face as he said, "My lord, I know many locations of vengeful spirit strongholds in the central area of the Ghost Realm. These strongholds are quite hidden and should still be intact. If you sweep through those strongholds, you'll surely gather a large number of subordinates and obtain plenty of Pure Yin Stones!"
Although I felt a bit uneasy about Xu Qing's mischievous grin, I realized that having someone like him around would be beneficial for navigating the dangers of the Ghost Realm; it would help prevent others from plotting against me and ensure my survival.
I patted Xu Qing on the shoulder and said calmly, "Xu Qing, you're quite impressive. From now on, you'll be my chief disciple. You will manage all my subordinates! If you work hard, I won't forget your rewards!"
"Thank you for your recognition, my lord!" Xu Qing bowed to me, a more sinister smile spreading across his face. After receiving my promise, a flicker of loyalty arose in his heart, as his interests were now tied to mine. As long as I remained alive, he would have the opportunity to gain even more benefits.
Xu Qing and I exchanged ideas for a while longer and devised a simple plan. Satisfied, I nodded and then waved my right hand, declaring loudly, "Everyone, let's set off! Follow me into the depths of the Ghost Realm!"
