I opened the iron door and descended the stairs, quickly arriving at the basement of the villa.
"Wow, these ghosts really know how to enjoy themselves!" I glanced around the basement, which resembled a miniature amusement park. Although it wasn't very large, it was filled with various play equipment for children, and there was even a small swimming pool right in the center of the basement.
The butler approached me, shining a flashlight toward a room deep within the basement—the only room down there. "Jiang Ling, the ghosts that the master keeps are in that room over there! Here’s the flashlight; I’ll be heading out now!"
He handed me the flashlight and hurriedly walked toward the exit, his expression somewhat frantic, as if he were afraid to stay in the basement. I realized that he was just an ordinary person, so it wasn’t surprising that he feared those ghosts.
"It’s a bit too quiet here alone! I should deal with those ghosts quickly and get out of here!" I shook my head, stuffed the flashlight into my left hand, and walked toward that room. Even though my left hand was affected by Voodoo, I could still manage to hold a flashlight.
"Hey? Someone's coming! Let’s go mess with him!" The door to the room swung open, and seven ghosts rushed out, grinning as they surrounded me.
These Seven Ghosts wore red belly bands and looked similar to ordinary children. However, their skin was as white as paper, and their eyes were entirely black with no hint of white. What stood out most were the thick silver rings around their limbs and necks, engraved with intricate symbols and grimacing ghost faces.
After rushing out of the room, they scattered throughout the basement. The play equipment blocked my line of sight, preventing me from spotting them.
I occasionally swept the flashlight around the basement and had almost reached the front of that room but still hadn’t seen a single ghost. Furrowing my brow, I muttered to myself in confusion, "Are those ghosts sleeping in there? Why aren’t they coming out to play?"
Suddenly, a tinkling sound echoed through the basement like wind chimes. I was startled; there was clearly no wind in the basement—why did those chimes suddenly ring?
"These ghosts dare to scare me!" I aimed my flashlight toward the source of the sound and saw one ghost shaking the wind chimes vigorously with both hands.
"Haha! Gotcha scared, didn’t I?" The ghost laughed loudly while shaking the chimes, unaware that I could see them.
"Since you all want to play, I'll entertain you properly!" I thought to myself, putting on a fearful expression and stepping back in a panic. I shouted loudly, "There's a ghost here! A ghost!"
"Haha, coward! Everyone come out and tease this scaredy-cat!" The ghost let out a loud laugh, shaking the wind chimes with even more force. At the same time, six other ghosts emerged from the basement. Some were swinging on swings, others riding hobby horses, and some playing on rocking chairs. The basement was suddenly filled with a cacophony of noise.
"Ah! Don't come over! Stay away from me! I have practiced martial arts!" I pretended to scream in terror, my legs giving way as I plopped down onto the ground. I counted silently in my mind; there were seven ghosts in total in the basement, and their cultivation levels were quite weak, making them easy to handle. I felt a sense of relief.
One ghost noticed that I had stopped screaming. He paused his actions and said to the others, "This is boring! This person isn't afraid of us at all; we need to do something more impressive!"
"Great idea! Let's use our trump card and scare him to death!" the other ghosts exclaimed excitedly. They all stopped what they were doing and rushed over to a box, reaching inside to grab something.
"I can't wait to see what kind of tricks you come up with!" I sat quietly on the ground, not stopping them but rather looking forward to what they would do next.
After three or four minutes, the ghosts finally stopped. Some held pig heads, others had pig limbs, and some carried pig tails. Finally, they covered the missing parts with a piece of clothing and combined everything into a standing sow.
The box contained offerings of blood and meat that Wang Hai had given them. The items they held were leftovers from their meals, while the clothing was something they had stripped off the butler.
"Foolish humans, upon seeing this Great Sage, why don't you kneel down immediately?" The sow made by the ghosts looked gruesome, covered in blood and particularly gory. With its ability to walk upright and speak human language, anyone would surely be terrified upon seeing it.
"Haha, you seven ghost heads are quite funny!" I laughed heartily, unable to contain myself.
"Ghosts, it's wrong for you to enjoy pranks like this! Get back into your statues and behave; otherwise, I'll take action!" I pretended to scold them fiercely as I stood up from the ground, holding my Demon-Subduing Staff and walking towards them.
"Ah! He can see us! Run!" The group of ghosts was frightened by me and immediately scattered, rushing towards another room in the basement.
"These ghosts are really bold!" I shook my head, feeling a bit puzzled. Although these spirits enjoyed playing tricks, it hadn't reached the point where a sorcerer needed to be called in for punishment.
I pushed open the door to the room and stepped inside quickly, shining my flashlight around. The room was empty except for an altar positioned in the center, with seven Wooden Statues lined up on top of it, all depicting children.
"Ghosts, they seem quite obedient!" I sensed that each statue concealed a ghost within, perfectly matching the earlier count.
I scanned the room with my flashlight and noticed an iron door on the left side. A faint smell of blood wafted from behind it.
"Hey? Why is there another ghost statue here?" I saw a statue in front of the iron door. Its expression was fierce, with a green face and sharp fangs, looking nothing like a child's should. Strangely, a piece of red cloth covered its eyes, yet I could still feel its gaze upon me.
"It seems that the ghost Wang Hai wants me to deal with is hiding behind this iron door!" My expression grew serious as I swallowed hard and walked over to push open the iron door, directing my flashlight inside.
