When I woke up, it was already the second morning. Due to the significant depletion of my Yang Qi, I had been unconscious for a long time.
"What the hell! Why do I keep fainting lately?" I got out of bed and rubbed my somewhat dazed head, puzzled by the frequency of my recent blackouts.
"What is this place?" I stepped outside and saw that I was in a location with a row of wooden houses under repair. These houses looked precarious and seemed to have some age to them.
Surrounding the houses were many saplings, and sunlight filtered into the courtyard, creating a serene atmosphere devoid of any heat. The environment here was exceptionally tranquil.
Standing on the porch, I closed my eyes and could hear the chirping of birds around me, faintly picking up on voices in conversation. Following the sound, I walked briskly in that direction.
"Humans cultivate Buddhism through good deeds, demons transform through Buddhism, ghosts accumulate virtue through Buddhism; all things in the world can cultivate Buddhism. Namo Amitabha Buddha!" As I reached a courtyard, I saw the Forgetful Sea Monk sitting in the center, discussing Buddhism. In front of him sat a group of intelligent beast spirits, quietly listening to his teachings. However, when they noticed my presence, they immediately let out a shriek and scattered in all directions.
"Jiang Ling, you’re awake!" The Forgetful Sea Monk wore his signature smile as he addressed me. "If you have any questions, feel free to ask!"
I nodded and asked, "Master Forgetful Sea, did you save me? How long was I unconscious? And where am I now?"
The Forgetful Sea Monk pressed his palms together and replied slowly, "It was someone else who saved you; you were unconscious for quite some time. You are currently in the backyard of Goldfish Temple."
I furrowed my brow and looked into the distance; indeed, I could see the shadow of a temple. My confusion deepened as I asked, "Master Forgetful Sea, if it wasn't you who saved me, then who was it? And why am I here?"
The Forgetful Sea Monk smiled and said, "You will come to know who saved you in due time. I brought you back to the temple because I sensed that you have a connection to Buddhism and wanted to guide you into the Buddhist Sect for cultivation."
"Guide me into the Buddhist Sect for cultivation? Master Forgetful Sea, are you joking?" I was certain that the Forgetful Sea Monk knew I practiced Daoist Arts. Once someone enters the Daoist Sect, it is rare for them to join the Buddhist Sect. Although cultivation in both sects does not conflict with each other, practicing spells emphasizes profound methods rather than numerous techniques.
The Forgetful Sea Monk seemed to see through my heart. He smiled and shook his head, saying, "Although you have practiced the Dao, your powers are now wasted. Even two ghosts could easily take your life. The practice of the Buddhist Sect emphasizes karmic connections and enlightenment. As long as you join my Buddhist Sect and attain supreme Buddhism, you will naturally be able to protect yourself without needing others to save you."
"Whether you join my Buddhist Sect or practice Buddhism depends on your true intentions; I will never force you. Amitabha!" The Forgetful Sea Monk smiled, clasped his hands together, bowed to me, and turned to walk outside.
After hearing the Forgetful Sea Monk's words, my heart became unsettled.
Three years ago, I was stripped of my powers by a master and fell to the status of an ordinary person, severely injured; that was the first time I fell into a coma.
Two years ago, I encountered the insignificant Ninefold Grudge Infant and fought it, only to be easily defeated. If it weren't for the Ninefold Grudge Infant's benevolence, I would have been dead. That was the second time I fell into a coma.
Yesterday, I was blocked by two female ghosts. In the past, I could have easily exterminated them with a wave of my hand. But yesterday, I was chased by those two female ghosts with nowhere to escape. If someone hadn't come to my rescue, I would likely have died. That was the third time I fell into a coma.
"Can I really live peacefully like an ordinary person?" I quietly asked myself, knowing the answer was clearly no. I still needed to go to Spirit Ghost Street to find Jiang Bao and ask him why he took away my inheritance; I had to find out who had stripped me of my cultivation and make them pay for their actions; I needed to confront the Eighty-Seventh Generation Disciple of Maoshan, Jikong, who indiscriminately killed the Ninefold Grudge Infant when I had promised to stand up for it... There were many things waiting for me to do. I could only become strong enough to accomplish those tasks.
"I want to join the Buddhist Sect! I want to practice Buddhism!" I clenched my fists tightly and shouted loudly.
"Since you have understood, then come with me!" came the calm voice of the Forgetful Sea Monk from outside, as if he had already anticipated this outcome.
I rushed outside and saw Master Forgetful Sea wearing sunglasses and dressed in a neat black suit. His demeanor had undergone a complete transformation; he bore no resemblance to a high monk at all.
"Are you Master Forgetful Sea?" I asked tentatively.
"Jiang Ling, you can now call me by my secular name, Yu Yuanhang. My practice of Buddhism is about great freedom and emphasizes a life without constraints, so there's no need for surprise!" The handsome bald man in front of me nodded with a smile, acknowledging that he was indeed the previous Forgetful Sea Monk.
I looked at Yu Yuanhang in front of me, stunned into silence. The saying "Wine and meat pass through the intestines, but Buddha remains in the heart" probably describes someone like Yu Yuanhang, a High Monk!
At that moment, Yu Yuanhang walked up to a Mercedes-Benz. He pressed the car key and skillfully opened the door, then waved at me with a smile, saying, "Jiang Ling, what are you dawdling for? Come over here!"
"I'm coming right now!" I shook my head, putting away my shock. Since I had chosen to follow Yu Yuanhang to practice Buddhism, I would naturally persist in this path.
The car started, and I left Goldfish Temple with Yu Yuanhang, heading toward an unknown destination. As I gazed out the window at the scenery, I felt a hint of excitement deep inside.
After driving for quite a while, Goldfish Temple was no longer visible behind us. At that moment, a figure appeared outside the temple gates. If I had seen that figure, I would have been terrified because it was none other than the Forgetful Sea Monk who was supposed to teach me.
"Jiang Ling, I hope you can join my Buddhist Sect and attain supreme Buddhism! Amitabha!" The Forgetful Sea Monk said. He pressed his palms together and bowed toward the direction I was leaving, his face always adorned with a gentle smile.
Sitting next to Yu Yuanhang, I had no idea that the person before me was not the Forgetful Sea Monk. I noticed Yu Yuanhang stroking his bald head, a wicked smile creeping onto his lips as he muttered to himself, "Forgetful Sea dead bald donkey, you locked me away for ten years. Now that I'm out, there's no way I'm going back!"
Yu Yuanhang turned to glance at me; a fierce glint flashed in his eyes. He snorted coldly and said, "Forgetful Sea wants you to join the Buddhist Sect? I'll make sure he doesn't get his way. Just wait to fall into the Evil Path!"
I was too busy admiring the scenery outside the window to notice Yu Yuanhang's expression; all that filled my mind was the obsession to grow stronger.
