While Li Hanling was bandaging himself, I took the opportunity to observe him closely. He appeared to be a man in his thirties, with a square face and a scar at the corner of his eye that was as long as a finger, giving him a rather fierce look.
I shook my head and scoffed, "A tough guy like this, yet he's scared out of his wits. What a coward!"
I ignored Li Hanling and turned to assess the situation at the reservoir. I noticed several Water Corpses had already crawled up onto the banks and were running away from the reservoir. If they reached the nearby villages, it would surely cause chaos. Fortunately, the formation we had set up earlier was holding them back.
More and more Water Corpses were climbing up to attack the formation on the shore. It wouldn’t hold for long, and I could see some Water Corpses creeping toward us, bringing with them a wave of Corpse Stench. Frowning, I pinched my nose and shouted to the burly men around Li Hanling, "Hey! What are you all doing standing around? Hurry up and deal with those Water Corpses! Do you want them to escape?"
My shout snapped the group out of their daze. They grabbed their Peach Wood Swords and moved in unison toward the Water Corpses.
The movements of the Water Corpses were already sluggish, and with the formation binding them, they were nothing more than easy targets.
However, those burly men hesitated to get too close to the shore for fear of encountering any Water Corpses that had gained intelligence. This hesitation allowed several intelligent Water Corpses hiding near the shore to remain unchallenged. I glanced over and saw at least five or six such creatures lurking there.
Once Li Hanling finished bandaging his wound and saw the scene before him, his face turned bright red with embarrassment. He limped over to me and said sheepishly, “Master Jiang, we’re just amateur yin-yang masters; we can’t handle those powerful Water Corpses. Could you help us deal with them?”
I tightened my grip on my Peach Wood Sword, nodded, and replied, “Don’t worry, leave it to me!”
In truth, even if Li Hanling hadn’t asked for help, I would have stepped in anyway. This was my hometown; I couldn’t allow these intelligent Water Corpses to exist here. Leaving them would only bring disaster.
I affixed a Three Pure Wind and Fire Talisman onto my Peach Wood Sword, then bit my tongue to draw blood and sprayed it onto the talisman. My left hand quickly formed a series of Hand Seals, while I chanted, “Upper Three Pure Ones, revered deities. Grant me your power to vanquish evil spirits. Three Pure Wind and Fire Talisman, command!”
As I finished reciting the final character of the spell, I watched as the talisman ignited spontaneously without fire, igniting the blood on my sword. The entire Peach Wood Sword was instantly enveloped in a blaze of Yang Fire.
“Be extinguished!” I shouted as I charged toward the nearest Water Corpse, swiftly bringing my sword down. The Peach Wood Sword sliced through its defenses effortlessly, forcing out the Grievance from its mouth.
Li Hanling clapped his hands in admiration as he saw me effortlessly deal with a Water Corpse. "Indeed, heroes emerge from youth! Master Jiang, impressive skills!"
Flattery is always welcome!
Hearing Li Hanling's praise filled my vanity with satisfaction. I pulled the Peach Wood Sword from the Water Corpse's Spirit Cover, shaking off the remaining corpse water, and said with a sense of pride, "This is nothing. Let me show you what true skill looks like!"
As I held the Peach Wood Sword, ready to demonstrate my prowess, I suddenly noticed that the awakened Water Corpses had all retreated underwater, disappearing without a trace.
"No way!" I stared at the empty surface of the water, my expression turning sour. Just when I was about to show off, those Water Corpses had all been scared away, leaving the situation awkward.
I walked around the shore for a while, and by the time my Three Pure Wind and Fire Talisman burned out, I still hadn't seen a single Water Corpse.
"Ahem, Master Jiang, how about we pour some Black Dog Blood and Quicklime into the water to flush those Water Corpses out?" Li Hanling suggested with a cough.
My face turned pale. Just as I was about to nod in agreement, I suddenly heard a faint barking sound behind me. When I turned around, I saw a shadow panting at my feet—it was that peculiar mutated Three-Eyed Leech.
I glanced back at the formation on the shore and noticed that it had been bitten through by the three-eyed creature. My brows furrowed in annoyance as I said, "Why do you always follow me? You're like an unshakeable ghost!"
I grabbed the Three-Eyed Leech at my feet and an odd thought popped into my mind. Examining it closely, I grinned and said, "That Guy, if you can deal with those Water Corpses underwater, I'll consider letting you follow me."
Before the Three-Eyed Leech could react, I tossed it into the reservoir in front of me. It splashed into the water and initially floundered for a moment before sinking straight down.
"Master Jiang, what did you just throw in? I've never seen anything like it," Li Hanling asked as he walked over to me, looking exasperated. He had been standing too far away earlier and didn't get a good look at the Three-Eyed Leech due to poor lighting.
"You ask so many questions! Just stay quiet!" I put on a mysterious expression and shot a glare at Li Hanling before turning my gaze back to the reservoir.
I stared intently for five or six minutes, but the water remained calm and unchanged. I couldn't help but stroke my chin, muttering to myself, "Could it be that I'm overthinking this? That Three-Eyed Leech isn't a Demon Beast?"
Demon Beasts are peculiar creatures that exist somewhere between ghosts and living beings. They have no fixed form, and no one knows how they come into being. I've only heard that Demon Beasts can counteract evil entities, making them the most sought-after pets among all Yin-Yang Masters. However, they also bring misfortune, which is why I had been avoiding the Three-Eyed Leech.
After a few more minutes, the burly men around me finished dealing with the Water Corpses on the shore. One by one, they gathered around, silently staring at the surface of the reservoir like I was.
"Look! There's a body floating up!" At that moment, one sharp-eyed man shouted. Following his finger, I indeed saw a corpse, and I noticed a thumb-sized wound on its Spirit Cover.
"I didn't expect it really was a Demon Beast!" My feelings were mixed as I looked at the corpse. With a long sigh, I shook my head and said, "Never mind, I'll take my leave first!"
"The Water Corpses here will be dealt with; I'm leaving now!" Taking advantage of the fact that the Three-Eyed Leech was still in the reservoir, I quickly said this to Li Hanling and hurriedly left.
As I stepped away from the reservoir, I initially planned to shake off that Three-Eyed Leech. However, when I heard fighting sounds not far away, curiosity got the better of me. After hesitating for a moment, I gritted my teeth and thought, "Damn it, never mind! If Wu Jingye can't handle that Drought Demon, I can sneak attack!"
I tightened my grip on the Peach Wood Sword and slowly made my way toward the commotion.
